Yeah, Blue and Pinkerton were amazing. Their newer stuff is good too, Island In The Sun, Perfect Situation, Pork and Beans, so on so forth. It does lack the raw emotion that Blue and especially Pinkerton had that made them special. Rivers is getting older, he doesn't have nearly as much angst as he used to, he's settled down with a wife and he has a daughter now, he's not going to write more songs about how he wants to go back to being a young rock star and having sex with groupies, etc.
Yeah but we can dream right? Maybe Rivers will come out with an album that will just blow us away in his mature years, now that he has a different perspective on life.
@MrMss4 That would be very cool. Like I said, some of the newer stuff is pretty good, but most of it isn't the same. It has nothing to do with Matt Sharp leaving, which even he admits. I think that Pinkerton bombing when it came out traumatized Rivers, because he put his heart out there and everyone shitted on the album.
I was there in 96, well I was 22 and I bought this album. It was panned and hated by Blue album fans. I loved it and still do. Weezer grew up, changed there bass players and are now different. We have to accept that. Pinkerton is still my favourite Weezer album.
you just can't keep delivering the same stuff on 5 diferrent albums, it would easily become stupid and repetitive. once you gain success, you either commercial and make a job of singing, or your song remain and you go to the dump, broke, with no money left and nobody wanting to promote your records. the music industry doesn't give much of a choice. but anyway, we have a lot of good stuff already from a lot of great bands, so stop bitchin and enjoy the music
@TheCagedTiger imo, now they are just as lame as other commercial mainstream bands like Fall Out Boy, Paramore, ect. But I don't blame rivers, this album made him change.
@AsMhMoOt No it's not shit, but it's mediocre, which is not enough for me. Blue and Pinkerton is definitely in my top 10 albums, out of hundreds I listen to though.
@AsMhMoOt Actually no, I listen to Green Album, Hurley and Red Album, their bland. Except the only song that would sound like their old stuff is pork and beans. Weezer as Pitchfork said has become more of a brand then band.
@AsMhMoOt I never said that, and they probably can't win them back, Weezer's mediocre-sucky stuff has over weighed blue and pinkerton by a huge margin. It's like if your a man who wants to back to his wife that he cheated on many times. "Honey, please come back even though I had sex with 5 other women."
@AsMhMoOt Dude, you act like I only like 90s music, no.... my favorite band Radiohead was made way more amazing music then they did in the 2000s then they did in the 90s...I just don't like crappy music. Face it, it's my opinion that Weezer is shit now, I mean yea they got a few ok songs each album but overall it's crap, now if you excuse me Imma listen to the pixies.
@IvyNirvana That's fine if you THINK they are shit because that's your opinion. All you had to say in the first place was "In my opinion Weezer is shit blah blah".
@AsMhMoOt Actually your a troll, cause you keep talking, I'm just telling my opinion, and it's on an old weezer video, if it was on a new weezer video, I'd be trolling.
@theguy134 not saying you have to like it but no, they never sold out. In what aspect of their sound or style did they sold out? They've always had that pop edge since blue. The term you're lookin for i believe is "tone down" a lot of bands make this move in their later albums.
As a 14 year old I'm just really getting into weezer, and I must say, this song brought me close to tears. I can't imagine what it's like to be an old man looking back at you life and seeing how amazing it was and realizing you can never go back to it. It's just depressing, man
lol rivers wasn't actually an old man when he wrote it with him in mind. he was just at harvard feeling lonely and isolated in the winters with a leg in a cast & a long beard, realizing how his rock star life had changed.
he should've never left weezer after pinkerton to attend harvard..but he's all good now!
@dblmh It's still a positive song - he doesn't want to be an "old man anymore", so he's gonna go do something about it! I love this song - it's a good reminder of how you can still change your life whenever you want, no matter your age.
@dblmh but this is ironic because he was only a year or two older than when he was living 'the good life', probably in his mid-20's. He isn't actually older he just feels like his best years are behind him. Although double-ironically I think he was right.
@fuckamericanidiot Yes, I am aware of this. He could be 10 and a half when he wrote this song and it's still be about looking back at your life and wanting to go back
There isn't a single band in the world that gets better with time, Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Blur, Radiohead, Oasis. The albums from beggining or middle are the best, but their last or latest ones are not as good, that rule applies to Weezer.
The reason Pinkerton's my favorite album? Every song is awesome, but it starts off with "Tired of Sex", one of my favorite songs in existence, and then four songs in starts another four of my favorite songs of all time in a row -- "Across the Sea", "The Good Life", "El Scorcho", and "Pink Triangle".
weezer are unique in my view, most of their songs make me happy I dun even know why O_O the weird thing is, nobody I know likes them :L, I for one LOVE weezer
@PeakExp Weezer never sold out, they just "changed".......selling out would've been Weezer turning into a Pop-Punk band in the early 2000's to cash in on its popularity at that time.
remember that really good band Weezer? Ya, they are still good if you haven't realized or if your too busy making a comment on how the old weezer was better
@dirtbag1713 Weezer still writes good songs. The thing is, they aren't nearly as consistent as they used to be. Their new stuff has some good songs, but I would have to pick them out of an album I don't want to listen to in general.
To shut everyone up about the Red Album, King is a beautiful slow song, The Greatest Man That Ever Lived is an amazing mock-prog thingy, and Troublemaker (which rips this off) and Pork and Beans are good.
@piemanbeatle, I like heart songs... regardless though, if anyone has ever seen them live they'll stop caring which albums are better than others. honestly, I think their live shows blow all this studio stuff away. These guys are freakin talented.
Yeah, that's all good and well, but I prefer my Rivers to be poppy and uplifting -- like sugar. I don't want him all lemony and sour, confessionate and raw. That shit will only go so far. People have enough downers in life and don't need to turn on music to get any more of it, you know?
@RavishingBeyond I suppose, I suppose, but that is what is precisely what is keeping you from placing it a pedestal above Blue. Say what you will about what you like in Weezer, but there is a certain appeal from the emotion he puts in the album; one which all his ohter albums are missing. I dunno, it's all personal opinion regardless.
@realslimvulcan I wonder if Weezer is going down a long, winding road to oblivion. Nobody stays on top forever, but from what I gather, Weezer's shows and CDs get worse and worse as the years roll on. The last time I saw them live was just after Black Album came out, and the concert was garbage. They put half effort in at best. Hashpipe was even sang low key instead of blowing the roof off. A telling sign was that probably a third of the crowd came to see the opening band instead, then left.
@RavishingBeyond Well, Hurley was something of a redemption, what with songs like Represent, Viva la Vida, and Memories. Up until then, though, it was pretty horrid. Raditude is a candidate for worst alternative albums of all time, with Make Believe up there as well. Red was pretty bad as well, but it had a few decent songs. While I don't think they are going into oblivion right now, nothing is even so much as close to the two godly albums, Blue and Pinkerton. And some of Maldroit, too.
@thebestpathetic I dunno, even the best song on Raditude would be beaten by anything on Pinkerton or Blue. And then there are songs like Can't Stop Partying... ugh.
=/ Weezer has fallen greatly. I think it was because Matt quit and because Pinkerton was received so badly initially. The public wanted goofy songs, so they gave them what they wanted.
@realslimvulcan so you probably at least liked "Haunt You Every Day" off Make Believe then, right? It was pretty dark. Probably the only decent song on the disc. Red Album sucked too. I agree. I haven't listened to Hurley yet, but now that you brought it up, I'll have to check it out. Thanks.
@RavishingBeyond Yeah, some of the songs on there are great. In my humble opinion, the best songs on there are Viva la Vida, Represent, Memories, Hang On, and Ruling Me. Of course, a few of the songs on the album are utter trash, as well.

I don't get Pinkerton's cult following. This, in my opinion, is the only badass song on the whole disc. It has a wicked bass line and an awesome hook. But anyway, are people on acid when they listen to Pinkerton? Is that what I'm missing here, keeping me from putting it on a pedestal way above Blue Album?
Best part of this song: After they get done with all the frustration of the first chorus, you can still hear the frustration in the chords. Then Rivers exclaims: "Screw this crap, I've had it!" Then Matt Sharp in falsetto : "I've had it!" That's pure bliss.

@RavishingBeyond Red sucked EXCEPT for The Greatest Man that Ever Lived. That was a masterpiece!

@michaelhays92 What about Dreamin'?
SMfan199 10 months ago
@michaelhays92 I also like "The Angel and the One" "Dreaming" and "King."
"Pork and Beans" and "Troublemaker" are fun songs for when I'm feeling poppy, but for use in moderation.

RavishingBeyond 11 months ago
@RavishingBeyond I think you might be missing the raw, confessionate emotion on the album or somethin'.

Best part of this song: After they get done with all the frustration of the first chorus, you can still hear the frustration in the chords. Then Rivers exclaims: "Screw this crap, I've had it!" Then Matt Sharp in falsetto : "I've had it!" That's pure bliss.
