for the kids not to be looking at your ass....thats the best use i see for this bike..but for carrying stuff..the rear type carriers look more controllable
Every American would fawn at using a bicycle for other than riding in the park with a helmet on. There are no bicycle advertisements for good reason, it's dangerous to ride with all the cars. Americans can purchase automobiles and support automobile infrastructure. Also, I see more attachments on automobilies to carry bicycles than I do actual people riding a bicycle in plain sight. Americans like to pack up their "garage" bicycle and drive it away from where they live.
No, friend! You aren't right! I must think- You aren't from Holland. Because... You write- "Bakfiets" is the "suv" of the bikes. No- Bakfiets is a USEFOOL thing. A SUV- is a stupid, fat, slow "anything"- almost a tractor of the streets. It can't move on the field, it is too big for the town. It's for such a person- who would show: "I have money! I have so lot of money- that I can buy a useless, CO-FACTORY. expensive package- for somebody- who thinks- has not other values. But Bakfiets is god.
i love seeing passengers on bikes! thanks. i wanted to take passengers too, so i modified a velor longbike to comfortably seat one or 2 on the back, with long footboards. May i put the link here?; No?, please search;
" Taking passengers on my Stretch Beach Cruiser Bicycle " ,,of course it also can be used to strap cargo to.
the trend in the Netherlands now is the 'bakkersfiets' (baker-bike) it has a rack on the steer on which you can place a crate. these crate-holders can also be bought separately, so you can make a 'bakkersfiets' of any bike.
I do enjoy seeing enthusiasm in the States for bikes since I see tons of haters and morons bashing bikes and cyclists just because they are assholes. I realize biking isn't for everyone but if motorists would grow the fuck up and be nicer to cyclists people would bike more, AND if people on bikes would ride in the correct fucking lane on the road (not going head on with oncoming traffic in the wrong lane!) and ride responsibly then we'd not look like douchebags to society/motorists.
I have come to realize a very useful bike is worth every cent.. My Dutch bike is super nasty weather friendly... but it can't carry really big items..
A bakfiest will be my next bike!...
Is there a waiting list, or can a bakfiest be shipped in a quck maner?
I'm from Holland and there are lots and lots of parents who bring their kids to school with these "bakfietsen". Great to see the enthusiasm for these bikes! Funny! Love it.
@nocurenopay Yeah, as an American, seeing one of these on the street still causes me to look twice. I love them, but just don't have the parking space for one (I now live in an apartment in central Barcelona). I'm assuming most of the parents you mention have somewhere to park them.
@kirstendirksen I don't know if there's a movie about it on youtube, but I think that when you search for something like 'parking your bike in the amsterdam center' or something, you maybe find how it's done in Amsterdam, at the houses at the canal: there is no shed, if you're lucky you can use the basement, but other than that, you park it outside, with a cover of it to protect it against rain. Normal bikes are just parked in the stairway, or hung by hooks in the same stairway ;)
@weeardguy Thanks for your response. It would make sense to park them on the street. I have seen a few parked around here, but I'm not sure about overnight. I'd be afraid of leaving something so valuable on the street. I know in New York (where I lived before moving here) and Barcelona, I've always had very old bikes so no one would want to take them (or even parts off them). I will ask the family I know here with a bakfiets if they have problems with parking on the street.

@kirstendirksen Well, ofcourse you'll have to lock it (and in Amsterdam, preferably with more than one lock, one or two nice heavy bike chains secured to a bridge or lamppost will stop thieves from taking it: but besides that, I don't think bakfietsen are stolen much: there big, bulky and heavy, so you don't steel it and hop on to drive off like nothing happened ;) Most of them are also easy recognizable
I've notice all these trike bikes show examples in a controlled flat smooth surface parking lots. Real roads have dips, curves, corners that slant on the sides for gutters and typical hills not big hills but hills. Show us how this bike rides and handles curves, turns down hill and up in common road environments please.
My family and I spent 8 days in the Netherlands and saw many examples of the Bakfiets and other innovative designs the Dutch use. The kids were quite intrigued. As a motorist, you quickly realise in the Netherlands this is not the place for driving. It's too crowded for cars (as is the UK).

Nice video.
A thought, I saw "The Book of Eli" a few weeks ago and I thought another film where oil runs out and yet no one uses bikes as transport.
But if that happens bikes would be used again big time or am I stupid
