  • WAIT........HOW HE GRABBED MARY AND LEFT THE FUCKING BABY?? FOR REAL? DID Y'ALL SEE THAT??? N SHE WAIT TILL SHE GET OUT TO BE LIKE OMG THE BABY!! THIS IS INSANE...BOOOO

  • Comment removed

  • How could Charles have "found" the baby? Looks like a block of wood!

  • @labbie87 Charles did find the baby, even if Michael Landon didn't do the best job of showing it. Landon could have done better by making it a smaller block of wood. Heck, maybe the baby, cradle and all, transformed - i.e. didn't remain in one piece or the same shape.

  • poor mary she has a hard life :(

  • holy crap!!!!! that was awful!!!!!! i wasn't expecting it to be so terrifying and disturbing!

  • Will always remember this episode. It was what I was watching on the morning of 9/11/01

  • poor mary!! the happiness is not really her side she must first be operated on., then she become blind, then finally she gets a baby, but that is a miscarriage, and then they finally a baby, but who dies also!!

  • Mannusa77, nightmares? This is reality. Do you want your children (or future children) to live in lala land? This happens everyday, so get used to it princess. They had every right to show that scene.

  • this episode is one of those that just makes you cry,and for me,makes me marvel at landons writing...

  • I feel so bad for Alice :( She was one of my favorite characters

  • @Amimi150 I'm glad someone else said this. The loss of the baby was sad, but he was not the only one who died.

  • omg it made me cry :(

  • Where is part 1?

  • I was very young kid when I saw this episode back in the 80's and it is still haunting. Why didn't Mary or Adam grab the baby on their way out?!

  • THE SCENE WHERE ALICE AND THE BABY ARE TRYING TO BREAK OUT OF THE WINDOW SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN SHOWN!!!! This is a family show with alot of kids that watch too. They SHOULDN'T show such a horrific scene like that. Their deaths should have just been implied. I know I had nightmares after that scene!!

  • @manussa77 well it's one of a few really tough scenes. i think in a sad way michael landon did a terrific job, because i always remembered this episode, since i watched it as a little girl. it's horrible to watch alice and hear the baby, but this violence is so unexpected on lhotp, that's what makes it special

  • Wow this is so stupid. ONE Hester Sue would have not been able to open the door because of the heat, and even if she did, she should have re-closed the door. TWO, if Mary really cared about her baby there is no way she would have left him. THREE Why would Albert want to re-smoke a pipe when he did it before and got really sick? FOUR Why would Mrs Garvey leave the baby when she heard the other child crying for help? That's just another trip.

  • @SpockLover27 Its hollywood they never make it realistic or make the characters use common sense. I though it was really retarded that Mrs Garvey was right there by the baby and then she runs to get the blind kid out of the bathroom without picking up the baby first so that way they all get out of there in one trip without getting burn.

  • PA Ingalls and Doc Baker are CSI:Walnut Grove

  • this episode should have had a warning saying 'not suitable for children'. im 28 and iv seen this loads of times. Just seeing Alice and the baby within all the flames scares me!

  • Saw this for the first time as a child in the mid-90s and was completely horrified when Alice and the baby died in the fire.

  • Mrs.Garvey should have ran through he fire it would hurt her if she ran

  • they had plenty of damn opportunities to get the baby out and alice would of survived :/

  • Well I hope that at least the flames would burn through the nerves fairly quickly so Alice & the baby wouldn't be in too much pain.

  • Wow that was sad poor marry i feel rielly bad for her

  • For real, she wouldn't have forgotten to grab her baby.

  • 00:18 Why don't they take the baby? O.o

  • seriously the baby is more helpless than those blind kids and 4 adults helping them, but none grabbed the poor helpless baby right away? seriously, after this episode Little House is Just not the same......

  • Comment removed

  • i hate this episode;( when i saw alice with the baby and the baby screaming and alice man i hated it i skiped that part:( :(

  • What the heck wasnt the baby in her room!? how come they didnt get it thats just plain stupid

  • Hester Sue, catch.

    It's not that hard :(

  • @kallgoren In her defense, there was a fire and she panicked.

  • This is the most upsetting episode!

  • O.O When I saw her screaming through the wind, breaking the glass, I was thinking she should jump or something, they could've caught her :( :( I was terrifed, know I know why my papy is a firefighter...

  • JUST RUN THROUGH THE FIRE ALICE!!! Really, it does work depending on how fast you do it, five layers of clothes can save you

  • OMG, that hymth that Mary is using for a lalaby is so accidting! Know I keep humming it...

LOL, Mary is so sad and depressed, I think it was the biggest mistake to kill of Adam JR and Alice!

  • im sorry this was just supid. how many times did they walk away from that baby? seriously

  • @roselavender27 are you serious? first of Mary wanted to GO back to get the baby but Alice told her not to worry because she was going to Alice can see for Marry being blind in a fireing house can cause problems second what about her husband he knew the baby was there he heard the baby a FATHER is just as responsible as the mother.

  • and right after this the opening song going la la al

  • @roselavender27 Mary is not an idiot she probably couldn't get her baby anyway since shes blind she probably would of died to

  • @roselavender27 I feel very sorry for you being so judgemental .. trust me from experience you have NO IDEA what will happen in a tragic situation like that. Unfortunately you may learn this lesson from your own horrible accident if you don't know already not to judge... karma is tricky and lifes lessons even more tricky.

  • I'm sorry but that was a big smh on Mary's part as a parent.... =___= She was there, she could've taken the baby with her and led the children out

  • I hate how they changed Mary's life in this series and made her suffer more than she did in real life. She never got married or had a child. She lived with her sisters and their families until her death. She was blind she did have scarlet fever.

  • I watched this for the first time as a small child. My grandma had TBS which is cable tv. This episode scared me so bad that i said I would never live in a two story house.

  • Why is it Charles who collects the terrible burn baby???

  • Poor Alice - burn alive with the baby - reminds me of Irwin Allens City on Fire from 1979

  • No matter how TERRIBLE this fire was....Mary, I would have thought, would have gotten her baby up in her arms immediately! WTF???

  • This is horrific to watch. See how Alice was using the baby "as a battering ram" to break the windows? (She said so herself in an interview) That's why Mrs. Terhune said "Oh my god! The baby!" Like others have said, Alice could have used common sense and tried to save the baby by throwing it out the window, but I think at that point, it was just self-preservation. I think I was more sad that Alice had died than the baby :/

  • I think Alice could've grabbed the baby and then gotten the boy out of the bathroom. Maybe then she would've made it

  • Um sorry but I'm not leaving the room without the baby... Mary should've refused to move without the baby - the kid was right f'ing there!

  • How could she forget the baby?! Even Adam? I'm sorry but reallly? She was touching the rocker and you can hear the baby cooing. Sigh. Poor Mary and Adam. :'(

  • @crybabygirl08 I don't think she forgot. She was a teacher, her first thought was to get her students out safely and then get the baby on the way out, past a room she would have to pass again anyway. I think the real problem was that nobody fully realized the extent of the fire, and how quickly it would spread. It had been burning and growing in the basement, and once the door was opened, the inflow of air was all that was needed to make it go out of control.

  • she is supial get the baby first

  • omg. poor baby, and alice. wish kids would be more careful, it's mostly children who start fires, by accident or on purpose. stupid brats.

  • why did mary go blind?

  • @dappledbaybeauty In the book, it was due to scarlet fever. Not sure about the series, though.

  • @timhomer2009 thanks mate :)

  • Where's the clip. It's just a black box where usually the clip is. :S

  • @mljungberg10 Its working for me. if you live outside the U.S, they do not show my vids in certain regions/countries.

  • @Emotional2000 I've seen several episodes from your channel without problem, and I saw part 1 of this episode on your channel. Thank you for uploading, by the way. :)

To solve it, I installed the download manager for firefox and downloaded the clip instead. That worked, in case anyone has the same problem on their machine.

  • @mljungberg10 Thanks so much for the info. It will definetly come in handy.

  • @mljungberg10 do you know in which episode albert dies i just need to know

  • @gymgirl10107 It's in the first of the three movies they made after season 9: "Looking back to yesterday", I think it's called.

  • I thought Adam wasn't blind? Or is this in another epiosde he is not blind?

  • @AlaskanWolf714 There is much confusion surrounding Adam's eyesight. In the 2 part epi "To See the Light" Adam starts off blind and then regains his eyesight as a result of an explosion or incident.

  • @AlaskanWolf714 he got his vission back in another episode but for now he's blind

  • Mary was right there with the baby and Adam forgets his son!?

  • @TheBlueShadow101 Yeah, that's really strange! o.O

  • Because of Mary and Adam being so stubborn about not picking up the baby, 2 people died!!

  • What's the name of the episode when Laura has her baby?

  • Poor Mary - the writers really wanted her character to suffer as much as possible. Besides Laura's stillborn child, Mary had it alot worse!

  • @1985browneyedgirl Mary had a rough life in actual life. And as I have posted elsewhere, the main reason this episode was made is that the Actress who portrayed Mrs. Garvey wanted out of her contract, and so they killed her character off. I doubt this Episode would have been made had Hersha Paraday not wanted out.

  • @Garr1984, Hi thanx for the background info. I guess that was the only way the actress could exit the show. I don't see her character divorcing Jonathan and leaving town. So sad they had to kill off Mary's baby though.

  • I recall this episode from my childhood. It was probably the most tramatic thing I'd ever seen on TV up until that point.

Jesus, it was bad seeing them burn like that.

  • If Alice had of let mary get the baby everyone wud have survived.

  • Oh yea....the place burns right to the ground in ashes and alice and the baby are still all in one piece..thats totally normal...

  • Throw the baby out the window, someone would have caught him... and jump out...The worst both would have suffered is maybe a few burns and some broken bones...but they would have lived.

  • Noooooo! Alice and The baby died:(

  • Looks like alot f ppl saw this episode on tv last week,. So upsetting and I agree wtf was wrong with Mary.. Did you forget you were a mother? And she was playing with the baby wth .... Tear jerker

  • oh and one more thing! there was no smoke alarms!!!!!! thats messed up!

  • WHY THE HECK DID HESTER-SUE OPEN THE DOOR, KNOWING THAT MORE THAN LIKELY, IF YOU SEE SMOKE UNDER THE DOOR, WHAT WOULD YOU DO? i would say" Get the kids, and lets get out of here!". I mean she just opened the door! i mean they could have gotten out of the house, in like 5 mins! and all STILL WOULD HAVE SURVIED! but no she has 2 open the stupid door! me and my sister always yell" Y IN THE NAME DID U OPEN THE DOOR!".

    thumbs down 4 Hester-Sure

  • @Destini6001 yeah the thumbs up for you cuz you're DAMN RIGHT !!!

  • all Alice had 2 do was pick up the baby, and bust down the DARN dooor! and then her, the baby, and the boy could have gotten out at the same time!

AND STUPID ADAM CAME IN AND SNATCHED MARY, WITHOUT ASKING IF SHE HAD THE BABY!

they were panicing, i understand that! but GEEZ! PICK UP THE BABY FOOLS!

  • How about, "NO, I will get my baby! YOU GO!"

  • why did hester sue open the door in the 1st place?

  • Yes it is heartbreaking. Poor Mary goes thorugh alot!

  • If I were Alice Garvey I would have thrown the baby out the window and told Hester Sue to catch it. Then at least it would have had a chance. AND IF I WERE MARY I WOULD HAVE TAKEN THE BABY IN THE FIRST PLACE!

  • @TheSouthernSunshine1 This epi upsets me too... I just wished the characters would have used a little more common sense in regards to the fire.... This epi is deeply disturbing for me to watch. The circumstances regarding Mary's baby, brings me to tears each and everytime I watch... Truly heart-breaking to see Mary's reaction to the death of her child.

  • @TheSouthernSunshine1 I AGREE! WHAT IS WRONG WITH MARY????!!!!! Poor Alice! She was a hero!

  • @leahblashful Yes, exactly. I read Melissa Sue Anderson's book, and she said she asked Michael Landon if she could take the baby (she mentioned the fact that she was touching it when Adam told her there was a fire) and MIchael Landon said no. Melissa said she had problems leaving the baby when she was touching it.

  • @TheSouthernSunshine1 If alice had let mary get the baby everyone would have been alright and no one wud have died.

  • @TheSouthernSunshine1 She didn't now the house was on fire!

  • @TheSouthernSunshine1 It was to sad, yea I would throw myself out of the window to, and I don't think Mary knew how bad it was, so she thought she would...yeh now, help them get the blind children out..

  • @TheSouthernSunshine1 The window has Bars on it. You Couldn't of thrown the baby out the Window.

  • @TheSouthernSunshine1 me, too!!! Also if I were Alice when the kid in the closet started hollering I would have given the baby to someone who was heading outside and later when she was trapped from the fire, I would have ran through it as fast as i could to get out.

  • SHE WAS PRACTICALLY TOUCHING THE BABY AND SHE DIDN"T TAKE IT WITH HER WHEN SHE RAN AWAY!!!!! GOOD GRIEF!!

  • I never noticed what Hester Sue said until I turned the volume up all the way. That was kind of funny

  • BBQ baby battering ram! That's good family entertainment!

  • Here's an idea, Hester Sue, you moron - try CLOSING THE DOOR. Use a broom handle if you have to, for God's sake. It will prevent the fire from spreading as quickly.

And Alice - try TOSSING the baby out the window. Maybe that useless Hester Sue could try to catch him. Or maybe jump with the baby in your arms. Anything but just sitting in there having hysterics.

  • @kbirdusa Hester Sue wouldn't have caught the baby, she would have said "Oh Lord !" at the sight of Alice throwing it, and she would step back, scared of being hit by its fall !!! ha ha ha

  • When I first saw.. I was sickened by mrs Garvey death

  • Badly organized scenario. But

  • theres also a scene missing where the boy is snoring and the one boy asked him to go blow his nose.

8:51 there's no law charles that says a person has 2 cry in times of death everyone has there different ways

  • that was a hard episode to watch on tv

  • 2:11 "Where IS she? Where the PRICK is she?!"

I was like 7 when this came out, I can still remember watching it alone in my room, being terrified...what a horrible thing to show! Of course, now I wonder why she didn't just jump through the window--or better yet, HURRY THE FUCK UP AND GET THE KID without having to make sure it's all wrapped up nicely--just grab it and get the fuck out! And mom, leaving the baby in a burning building--sure she was blind, but she could STILL SMELL SMOKE!!!

  • @StevenShields29 No 1 is mentioning the other kids? remember them? they need help to get out 2 when u have 2 rush your mind is'nt always thinking clearly my 1st instict would b to grab my baby and help the other kids as im holding my baby but if they did that i guess we wouldnt have an episode.

  • 2:11 "Where IS she? Where the PRICK is she?!"

  • Hester sue should have closed the door to prevent the fire from spreading!!

  • @arachnophobia100 yeah but there was a spider on it so she couldn't...Sure you understand ! looool

  • The real Mary had scarlet fever and became blind at age 14. She never married and went to the blind school for 9 years. Then she lived with her parents and after their death lived with Carrie and then with Grace. She died from a stroke when she was in her 60s.

  • How very sad this story is

  • @LJersey80 That it is, from the terrible fire to the deaths that occur. This is a very heartbreaking epi of LHOP. It tear up everytime I watch this one.

  • God. My family and I used to watch this show together, and I remember as a kid when this happened. We all just sat there with our mouths hanging open. Traumatized me for years.

  • @RedbeardNC my mom cant watch it till this day!! the first time i saw this episode is when 9/11 happen coincidence huh!:(

  • also, i think its a much to horrific and just awful acting part for a young woman like mary to do! she does it well, but who wants to act that their child has been burned alive. the sadness would be too much if it happened in real life that you just cant 'act' it.

  • oh dear God. This is the worst thing ever.

Alice smashing the baby against the window trying to break it was the most horrifying thing ive ever seen. i feel sick. Saddest epi ive ever seen. Why did Landon make this? its just wrong.

  • @LiVvVie1 its not always a happy ending my dear...

  • A doctor and a crime scene specialist, only on TV!

  • Oh my god! She was right there with the baby and she didn't grab him when she heard there was a fire! PICK UP THE GODDAMN BABY!!!

  • Why did they have to die???? Alice risked her life to save the baby and all the others did was forget about him, and no one even came to help her! :(

  • @bazookabubblegum51 Mary was blind though. But your right, why did they have to die?:(

  • @bazookabubblegum51: Hester-Sue went back in an attempt to save her, but when the flames came too close she backed off, that's really understandable because it's an instinctive reaction of the body. The same reaction as pulling your hand back when you're touching something hot. Just as animals people are affraid of fire, so the first reaction of the body is to get away from it.

  • that scene was horrible but i think what makes it even more terrifying is that this is "little house" and we have never seen anything that macabre on the show O.O

  • What fool doesn't pick-up and protect their baby first? Even if they went to get the students out first, who did either of them think was bringing their baby down and out of the fire?

  • @alempot A fool having to abide by Michael Landon's script.

  • I'm sorry, but Mary *would have* picked up the baby first thing. It's absurd that she wouldn't.

  • the ladie just should of ran thruogh the fire the first time she had a chance

  • I just read Melissa Anderson's book and she was very upset about this story. She said there is no way someone would not pick up the baby right away, but Landon had the say so.

  • @garnet0101 I think Michael Landon had psychological problems, but hearing about his life as a child, I can see why.

  • Ugh...can you imagine what was left of the baby and Alice Garvey? They BURNED to death. And then Mary loses her mind, singing a lullaby to a corpse and becoming catatonic. This was a FAMILY show? More like a horror movie!

  • @cynthiacher And what I don't get is why Charles had to be the one to retrieve his own grandson's remains - it would've been awful for him to have that image stuck in his mind.

  • @cynthiacher I not only can imagine it, but know what it's like to lose a relative to a death by fire.

Except, in his case, there were no remains to retrieve. And that messes w/ a person's head more than anybody will ever know who hasn't also had it happen to a relative or friend.

At least this one was more accident than on purpose.

The fire that killed my former husband, & daughter's dad, was totally premeditated.

  • 0:18 Mary should've graved the baby, seriously.

  • @JeniBurton213 she did GRAVE the baby..sorry I had to say it ..lol

  • This is one of the most disturbing scenes I've seen on TV, especially for this era. Come to think of it, this show almost always had some horrible thing where someone was drowning or crushed in a falling carriage or some scary thing that would give me nightmares for weeks. I'm not knocking it, it was a great show, but sometimes I wonder if it was a little intense for younger viewers.

  • @RedbeardNC I have to agree. The deaths could have been prevented. When Ms. Garvey went and got the little boy out of the room, she should have gone to grab the baby and then lead him out as well so they were all three out safe.

  • @JeniBurton213 Or, if it is true that Ms. Garvey's death was organized because the actress wanted to leave "Little House", the creators of the series could try to "save" both children and let Alice die.

    Guido.

  • I've had nightmares about Alice and the baby. It always looked like Alice was throwing the baby against the window to break the glass. D:

  • Mary did start to go back, but Alice said that she would get him.

Silly that Mary didn't get him right off, but she DID try and get him.

  • Boy, were these people STUPID. The FIRST person to be gotten out of there should have been the helpless baby!

  • i still can't believe mary 4got her baby i know in this situation u don't have much time 2 think but it's her BABY u should remember that he's there! there was a fire at my dad's office last night and were still trying 2 figure out wat caused mayb it was a ciggarette or sumthin

  • It's a really disturbing scene to watch when Alice Garvey and that Baby are by the window....

  • PICK. UP. THE. BABY!!!!!

  • it's really poor..Mary And Adam (Linwood & Melissa) Lost The 2 childs :(

  • I know!!! Me and my sister had this on a taped video recording and every time we watched it, we'd yell.. pick UP THE BABY!!! NOW NOT LATER AND THEN YOU'D BOTH BE ALIVE!!!!

  • ....This makes me Sad...

    Because...nobody pikes up the baby!!!!

  • holy crap if thats soo soo sad.. if they would have done one thing differently, just one thing, alice and the baby could have survived. that hurts my heart. :(

  • Mary was right there with the baby and she didn't grab him! If that was my baby and I heard the word fire That baby would be the first thing on my mind

  • @LadyKKS I agree! I was soooo mad at Mary. All the kids are important but I am a mom and I know I would get my baby myself!

  • Comment removed

  • @LadyKKS i know right?! alice should have grabbed the baby first too before she went to go save the other boy because it would have only taken a second to grab up the baby, and run to the other kid while she was coverin the baby's head!...my god though that was...i was in tears...It took Mary a while to get over her baby boy's death.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm surprised their bodies survived enough to be taken from the aftermath.

They never found a single trace of my former husband's existence after he was killed in a fire that was started on purpose.

He lived for at least 10 minutes before he died, and they still couldn't find a single solitary bit of evidence that he'd ever been there.

The only evidence we have was captured by accident-when he called in to his home and talked to a friend.

  • they should have left the door shut it would have slowed the fire down

  • god thats twice nobody picked up the baby!!! PICK UP THE DAMN BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @ThePolkadotbikini I kept screaming that too, I guess everyone who watched this did.

  • man thatis so scary and very very sad, i feel so sorry for Alice Garvey and Marys baby that they got burned in the fire, :( poor Johnathan and Andrew Garvey yeah i feel so for them too that Mrs. Garvey died so sad. (sniff, sniff) :(

  • Remember what Smokey the bear said, "only You can prevent dramatic episodes of LHOTP". LOL!

  • Only You.
