Thank you so much for this video, I take an Ukulele class at my school and I wanted to learn some new ways to strum, and also Ukulele is pronounced like Ooh-ku-leh-leh, I live on Oahu and its surpisingly difficult to find a teacher as good as you or mine, so thank you. :D
You are such a positive and perfectly paced instructor for beginners! Thank you for your simple explanations including the verbal, rhythmic and visuals. Looking forward to watching the next in your series!
Thank you so so much for this video! Most video's go far too fast and they're very low quality, but this video was perfect and I now feel a lot more comfortable strumming after watching this. Thank you again!
Thank goodness! I got a ukulele for my birthday (yesterday) and was unsure how to strum. I was sort of afraid that strumming was considered too basic to warrant a video. Thanks for the tutorial!
I have spent so much time practicing chords that my strumming is awful. I get a good rhythm going and as soon as I change chords, the rhythm goes out the window. Will I eventually be able to strum a rhythm without thinking about it so much? I practice every single day and I still have to think about what my strumming hand is doing. Pathetic.
@yjiangcity You will eventually! :) Don't be too down on yourself. You sound completely normal. Your consistent practice will continue to pay off. Continue to spend a lot of time practicing your finger positions as well without strumming so you can easily switch your fingers between chords. Your body needs time to build muscle memory. Also if you are getting hung up on chord changes, don't hesitate to slow down your tempo and then work your way up. Keep up the good work... it'll come! :)
hey, i've got a question. I'm finding it really hard to change chords in a smooth way. For example, from C to G like in the video. I keep practicing it but I'm very slow and clunky. What can I do?
@0llieshrieve it takes a little bit of time to find a motion that feels natural and sounds good. be sure that your fingers are as loose and relaxed as possible. i try to use the nail-side of my fingers for my down strum and the flesh side of them for my up strums.
@Esther7290 I suppose you could say that I imagine my strumming hand holding a tennis ball. My fingers are very relaxed but they are curled in just slightly so that on my down strums the nail side of my finger is strumming the strings, and then for my up strums, the flesh side of my thumb and fingers is strumming the strings. I go over this more in depth in my free ukulele lesson book you can get on UkuleleTricks [dot] com. Hope this helps!
Thanks very much. I like your teaching technique. It's perfect for the beginner like me. It is not too fast to follow. I hope you will publish more video.
@msellakate finding the right rhythm for the song is all about finding the count or the tempo of the song along with it's time signature (e.g. is it counted in four, three, or six?). If you can find the count for the song or are able to tap your foot along, you can begin to find or create a strumming pattern that locks into that count or timing.
GRREAT! Slow, simple, one step at a time explanation of thee uke strums! Woohoo! Just what the Uke doc ordered! Man YT is awash in uke strums and for the noobee it's like where do I start? At the beginning of course. DOH! Bret lays out the foundation to build on. Learn to walk before you run! I'm just learning to crawl. Ha!

I'm seeing the "tropical" instrument, Ukulele, and sleds in the background. Interesting contrast. But very helpful video, thanks a lot
