  • Check out lindos.co.uk for studio quality microphones and preamp that connect straight to a DSLR or camcorder.

  • good job

  • Great vid man! Thanks a lot!

  • Thanks man... That clap trick and hiding the mio are some great tips!

  • Great video, what about if you are a musician wanting to record a line out signal to the audio mic input of a camcorder? Or is it best to record the audio direct to digital in a DAW and then sync the video in video editing software afterwards!?

  • thanks for the clap idea! that really does help a lot!

  • Good tips! Thanks

  • Good tutorial. Thank you.

  • near no budget=$200

  • Great video.

  • If you are going to spend 200 dollars for a microphone equipment, you might as well buy the H2 handy recorder.

  • @DarkCROWgaming True, I actually have one and it's quite nice. This video is over 3 years old.

  • @DarkCROWgaming H4n!! :) :)

  • great stuff, very informative, love the examples. thanks William!

  • Very helpful, I plan to buy a Canon 1080p VIXIA HFR100 which has a 3.5 mm mic jack on it.

Have you any idea how I could put that to use to get better sound?

  • This helped alot thanks! I have a question on the clap sound for syncing your sound. Could you elabourate a little more on doing this? I'm not seeing how this que sound would help all that much. If I make a Que sound I still need to match the audio file to the event when I start playing as the audio track will have no timed que to match the video que. Do you know what I mean? Thanks for the help. Cheers, IC.

  • sorry..just...let me hear that again...1:28

are you friggin crazy spendin that much on a mic!

  • @bobheadownz yeah its a bit isn't it? i'm sure there are other ways to get mics, old computer mics, karaoke, things like that

  • You might have noticed the video is almost 3 years old, and the footage depicted even older than that.... prices fall, tech changes.

  • It's not that many

  • or you could get a good sound recorder

  • Good tips thanks! I'm wondering if you've ever used a shotgun mic, and if so, which make/model?

  • thanks awesome tips man they'll help a LOT!

  • helpful

  • this is very helpful thankyou !

  • very helpful, thanks.

  • Great

  • What about power. Do I have to plug the fast track usb in? I do most of my shooting out in the middle of nowhere.

  • Thanx man. Went out and got the same M-audio equip but I keep getting interference. Any advice?

  • Thanks... you did real good S2.

  • William,

I've been a professional sound recordist for film and television for 25 years, and you did a GREAT job. In fact, you came up with a couple of ideas I haven't even thought of and my specialty is hidden mics.

Good job. Keep it up and I look forward to your next video.

  • Thanks man, great tips! :)

  • Good video. I just got a Rode M3 and am going to plug it in a digital voice recorder. I hope that will work, although some people think I would need a pre-amp or audio interface.

  • good job man!!!

  • Great!

I just ordered one of those low price portable recorders with an external mic input on it... I am going to plug my Rode Videomic into the imput and attach it all to a boom pole/mic stand! I think it will work great!

Thanks for the great video man!

  • Thanks a lot for this. Really good tips.

  • Thanks Silikon2! Great video and ideas. I'll be looking for more of your videos and hoping to catch a movie of yours.

  • Excellent ideas, very clearly demonstrated - thank you!

  • Thanks for the tips. I would have never thought of those. Great job!

  • thank you! you helped me solve my audio problem.

  • great advice! what do you think about XLR inputs and recording sound through the camera via Boom Mic? (Canon XHA1)

  • Don't have experience with that particular equipment, but if you can record the audio and video together, it is definitely easier later.

  • Thanks; this helped a lot!

  • Dude you rock!!! :D

    helped me alot

  • Very cool! Thanks, dude!

  • good tips and explanation.. thanks

  • There are so many cheap ways to record your vocals without using the cam's mike. The cam's mike ruins everything. So now there are stand alone wav recorders with XLR ouputs to connect your better microphones.

I really like the way you explained everything in such a short video. Voice overs were perfect. Titles were fast and clear. THanks,

  • very very helpful A+

  • A+++

  • yeah but what if ur to young to have a job how can u afford this?

  • I've known about this for years but never on youtube was it explained, the Benefites an advantages of recording audio separately(cause a camecorder even with A good Mic recordes mideocre sound/some Indie films kill the the film with in cameocorder sound).OH Guys you could also use mini disc or mp3 recorder Made by ZOOM(with veriable sampling up to 96krz(dvd rate) what the big boys use)they sell them a Guitar Center and Even B&H which ALSO IS VERY uselfull in the FIELD that and a boom Mic.

  • Text for the tips

it's just what I needed this morning, well almost I am looking for an external recorder with the microphone any suggestion

  • thank you. please sir, can i have some more?

  • Great advice!!!!!!! That'll help me with the movie I'm making with my friends!!!!!!!!

  • hi, great video. Actually wondered which program you use to record the audio ?

  • Something called Hard Disk OGG on XP I think it was. It's not that important as long as it is good quality and outputs a useable file format.

  • Very good video, Thanks

  • Excellent!

  • Great vid.

    5/5

  • Just what I needed to know cheers.

  • Good Job! Thank you for the lesson.

  • so thats what those clapper things are for

  • You're a genius! I've been wondering about this for a while.

  • I'm a sound mixer/recordist for film and television and some of your tips and tricks are actually very similar to what we professionals use. We use hidden mics everywhere and we shoot dialog in both wide and tight shots, re-syncing the closeup sound to the wide part in the way you showed. The use of blankets on the walls out of frame also help "dry" up a room from that hollow sound. In your desk shot, you could have placed a vase or plant in front of the mic to hide. Good job!

  • Good Job!

  • Thanks! Clear and informative :)

  • quite informatative. will look for more.

  • can you show me how to enhance the sound of my thoughts ? (on film)

  • Thank you! This video was helpful and gave me a few ideas I'd probably not had on my own.

  • thank you very much!

  • good job, I especially like your explanation of the clack sound in the beginning. I always wondered how to get it to cue correctly, I've tried to match recordings of music to video of my band, but there are always time issues. The clack board would really help in many situations, just line up the click and everything else should match perfectly. Thanks.

  • Cool technique, I hope you can put an a title for the device name.

  • You have asked for feedback , so here it is . Excellent, Provides a method for good quality audio on a low budget. Excellent editing , to the point.

  • you did very well, you get right to the point, but y not just use a boom operator? maybe your friend, dad or sister to hold it for u? Best wishes!

  • It is hard to make that sound good on a budget because sound from the boom tends to be transmitted to the mic. (There are cheap mounts you can make to reduce this.)

It's really hard to film unbudgeted movies with extra people around who aren't doing much. Even if they are filling a needed role, it's very boring for them between shots (the bulk of the time) and so of course they tend to talk and such, creating chaos. I don't blame them, but it's best to have as few people as possible around.

  • thanks

  • Brilliant!

  • i'm going to ty this. read about it b-4. very hepfull.. do more tips

  • More! More! lol

  • that amazing great job...

  • You did good! :-) I'll refer a lot of people to this.

  • Thanks! That was very usefull! Whats the name of the mic again?

  • It's a Shure PG58-XLR.

  • is it good both indoor and outdoor?

  • I haven't tried it outdoors. I've only done limited outdoors filming so far, and the ambient noise was so loud that I just used the camcorder's onboard sound and had the actors really close to it.

  • thanks for sharing, very cool idea

  • Great job!

  • thats really helpful. It was great to see those ideas on how you hid the mic. Another lesson might cover some of the new portable digital recorders on the market as opposed to using a laptop. I have a powerbook and firewire audio adapter for it but i find it a bit too cumbersome lugging around to locations. it would be really cool if there was an portable preamp that could be used with an ipod.

  • Yep it is definitely a hassle having to have the laptop and mic cable and stuff. I looked at some digital recorders but never really found any good information or products that would work. Do you have specific models in mind?

A big reason I made this was that I found so little information on the internet about how to do something like this.

  • thanks 4 the tips. How u did?, lol, really well, just to short!.

  • wow.. very unusual technique, but cool. thanks
