  • The singing girls shirt is epic

  • At 4:31 It sounds like she said "Still a lie" o_o I think the singer is great but the arrangement didn't sound anything like the original song. It's too happy, the song is supposed to be sarcastic.

  • can i have the girl thats singing name and phone number please?

  • the girl singing is hot

  • Although in a sense the most important in the end result, realize that the perfomance is only part of the effort. Get some profesisonal musicians and this would be PRETTY AWESOME.

Because face it, apart from what I found to be some odd timing at the beginning...this is one FUNKY, FUN arrangement. So Kudos to whoever did it and congrats on the effort! :D

But I would love to see hear this done with better musicians. :)

  • Although it's a beautiful performance, it destroys the whole meaning of the song. Why's it so happy? The SATB choir in the back is irrelevant, the joke faces are useless... The whole song bases around sarcasm, so this technically sucks (in the spirit of the game).

  • Wtf? sounds nothing like the song?

  • @calilola130 its a mix whit the hidden soung at the restarts of a new game

  • BLEHHHHH, this isn't a very good arrangement. The orchestra is out of tune and the pacing feelings weird.... Despite this, it was STILL better than the Spoony Bards version.... Either way, the problem video game bands encounter with "Still Alive" is that the voice (of both Glados and the singer) are auto-tuned and modified up the shit.

  • wow this video sucks, they cant sing worth crap.. so take that "critique" and shove it up your, well, you know.

  • one of the tags is cake :{D lol, awesome

  • Keep in mind that its a student run ensemble too...might go a ways towards explaining some of the rougher edges.

  • i really liked it. i feel like i understood the lyrics more. good voice.

  • ... Seriously, the spirit of the original in-game song is not at all present here... It's just a fuckingly bad arrangement...

  • Where is this again? I want to go there for collage.

  • those shirts are making me jizz

  • 17 people was too brain dead so they died by fire (play the game and you will understand what i mean, or you already do)

  • Oh man it's baby GSO! Did we really have so few members then? xD

  • the fat black guy behind the singer is pure BOSS

  • Maybe you'll find someone else to help you.

    Maybe Black Mesa

    THAT WAS A JOKE.

    HAHA. FAT CHANCE.

  • Oops, forgot to finish the sentence.

This is what sediment shaped sediment does to you.

Also when she said "except for the ones who are dead..."

The whole orchestra pauses, then just resumes.

what, were they caught of guard?

  • @JoshuaWhiteful

I think it was to enhance the irony of the lyric.

Also if you listen closely you can hear a solo clarinet during it still.

  • 17 people are now severely crippled.

that is what sediment shaped sediment.

  • 17 didn't make it through the testing

  • I think it's a good effort on their part. The issue is that a lot of the instrumentalists seem a little amateur. Simple thing like the fact that the trumpets and flutes are supposed to be parallel to the ground and the tuning of the violins would have made it a truly exceptional piece. They obviously worked very hard on this, and that alone makes them awesome. Just a couple touch-ups on their part would have probably made this a viral video.

  • 15 people hates this song because they prefer Rick Alstey having sex with Justin Biever.

  • guys... i can just say 4 words :) : THE CAKE ISNT LIE!

  • @ElInvenAventuras That's oddly specific.

  • @ElInvenAventuras 1 preson nedes to czhek thier speiling

  • I would prefer it to be played at it's original tempo because when it's this slow it sounds nothing like it.

  • Some thing are made of Fail Frosting covering a Fail Cake. But seeing as how the Cake is a lie and this cover has EPIC written all over it, I give it a 200 out of 100 score.

  • oh...my...god...wow! Im at a loss for words, AMAZING!

  • Why the hell did the play the radio music in the middle of the song? >_>

  • It was nicely arranged but was too slow. Remember this is a happy song with dark humor.

  • @Fredfredbug4 I rather liked it at this tempo; it made it feel like a very theatrical villain song. :)

  • that is one original performance of this piece! just awesome :D

  • not really owned...

  • lol at the latin section. only people who have actualy played portal would understand it XD

  • ok i understand that the music sounds weird but i dont think it is the band because the singers are going a different speed and stuff so it has to be the score

  • I felt that the song was changed WAY too much, and the singers voice isn't exactly the right pitch. Eh... 6/10 :P

  • Screw what alot of you guys are saying, I think this was awesome.

  • This is soooo bad... The score is great, but the band is sooooooo bad.

  • 9 people in this world have no heart. This was so amazing!!!!

  • I like the chorus! To the trash talkers: let's see you do this! This is cool and I would love to be in this band.

  • @DragonsShallRise i could do this on my trombone better

  • My school NEEDS to do this! O_O

  • this sounds terrible! I appreciate the effort to play still alive in an orchestra... but a GOOD orchestra please.

  • Bassoon at 1:16!!!! WOOT!!!

  • Man, how come this doesn't have more views? It's great!

  • it was good just something was a bit off. I think it was the genuine human emotion the singer put into it to match the lyrics. I think it workss best when there is only the faintest hint of emotion like a robot thats not really supposed to have them but does. I know thats weird but so is glados.

  • Pretty good arrangment, but this orchestra sounded awful... I couldn't sit through the whole thing.

  • The singer was a bit breathy, probably from being nervous. I'd work on taking deeper breaths and singing from the stomach a bit more than using your head voice. The Orchestra needs to tune up a little bit as well, but I believe that everyone was probably just very nervous. It is an epic song after all. lol

  • "IT'S SO DELICIOUS AND MOIST!"

The choir singing that made me laugh for the rest of the song, so I had to hear it again.

  • The arrangement made me giggle. I absolutely loved it! However, yes they were a bit off key, and the singer could have been more enthusiastic because this is an extremely fun song to sing!

  • This was really great! I wish this was the theme for the game, as in orchestrated!

  • Well, I think Still Alive from valve's portal will be the most catching game song of this decade (or heck, century)

  • I am disappoint.

It hurts to say this, but this hurt my ears. The violin section of the orchestra was very, very out of tune. Rest of the orchestra were not far behind, but violin was the worst offender. As soon as the violins stopped playing, it was almost tolerable. Lead singer's performance was not something I particularly liked either, but passable considering she had to stand right next to those violins messing with everything.

I need some grief counseling. And cake.

  • You do realize that "I am disappoint" is a meme, right?

...maybe not. Oh well, that is inconsequential.

Regarding talking trash, there is a difference between critique and trash-talking. Critique is an honest, well-argued opinion either against or behalf a performance. Trash talking is just rude insults without any arguments behind the claims.

I appreciate the effort of the musicians, but the points I mentioned in my original post still stand. The orchestra was badly out of tune.

  • And you are totally right. I agree with everything you said. I had the impression that the lead singer thought she was better than she actually is.

  • @HerraTohtori totally agree

  • @HerraTohtori It seems like a general problem for the ensemble. This particular song is probably the worst offender, but there's something a little bit off (tuning, instrumentation) on each of their songs. I really appreciate the idea as well, but its no VGL. Maybe that's an unfair comparison, but considering that I've been in some really good (as well as not so good) student/youth symphonies, they should aim higher.

  • back up singers: ftw! XD

  • I love portal so much! laughed and sang through the whole thing! thank you for uploading this! it really made my day!

  • This is really nice! The lead singer is cute too! <3

  • A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

I've listened this song many times (I've got it from OC ReMix) but I couldn't imagine this video!

    6/5 stars

  • i want to be in this band

  • Amazing!

  • played the game,.... AND, ... I approve .

    COMPLETELY!

You Guys rock, good work, superb, Bravo!

    YOU NAILED IT!

    HOORAH FOR LIVE PERFOMANCE!

Wish I could have been there, I might have cried happy tears, honestly.

  • Brava!

  • Wheeee radio version from the begining of portal had a reference! X3

  • Yeah, the radio version is actually a warped version of Still Alive. Not sure if you've finished the game, but you should play the game with Developer Commentary. It's pretty cool and you hear from many people who were involved in the game.

  • wat!???!!!?!? gamer symphony orchestra?!

coll can any1 tell me what songs have they played and from what game

thnx cuz ill love an orchestra which plays game music ^_^

  • Portal - still alive

  • Wow, this was really well done, and though I enjoyed it and everyone is obviously very talented, the orchestra wasn't playing in the right key, and the soloist was also off key and...I think maybe she was singing in falsetto? Her voice sounded extremely breathless and strained, which, while arguably appropriate for the character, made it a little difficult to fully enjoy...again, not bad, but could be improved...also she should be careful, she can hurt her voice singing that way :(

  • These are freakin kids. Get your own choir and do better. Then i won't criticize YOU.

  • Uhh...what?

I said it was good, I just also provided constructive criticism to help them get even BETTER, especially because I was concerned about the health of the lead singer's voice.

Also they're not kids, they're college students and therefore adults.

Performing in the wrong key doesn't mean they suck, it means they made a mistake that they can easily fix so that next time they perfrom it's even MORE awesome :)

I'm not bashing, I'm trying to be helpful :)

  • I apologize, my brother got a hold of my youtube account making me look like a fool.

Best to you and you family Sincerely djpielover. =P

  • No prob, all is forgiven :)

  • viola rules

  • ahh, the lead singer and the flute parts are cute.

  • Their sound is iffy, and the arrangement is a little too far from the original for my taste, but it's a creditable effort all the same.

  • Ah cool, you added in the radio latin beat.

  • Best cover I've heard of this song...beautiful, delicious and moist.

  • sorry, to slow

  • That's my JEN!

You were fabulous, love, and you haven't changed a bit!

    <3

  • Your cousin Jen has great charisma, Rebbecca. Both vocally and physically. I love this song, and I'm so glad she and all of her friends there were able to recreate it like this. =D I hope the orchestra is still alive and well, and I most definetely intend on being part of it if I can manage to go to UM. That's a big 'um', isn't it? Lol. No hesitation here though. ^.^

  • I made a pun there and didn't even notice it. "the orchestra is still alive". xD Rofl

  • I love how in the middle they go into the in-game radio version of Still Alive XD

  • i wish to be in that orchestra

  • The singer is my cousin Jen

  • id tap dat

  • Great initiative, but many bad points such as :

    - The orchestra is out-of-tune =(

    - I think the song lost a lot of its personnality through these interpretation and orchestration. It's not supposed to be a ridiculous song, and all the funny cynic side is destroyed when you make irony so evident.

    - The 'Chupa Chupa' choir is a lot of bad taste

    - A little bit of chaos in the orchestra, especially when they play the radio mix

  • I heard that they were featured on Johnathan Coultan's website. Johnathan Coultan was the one who wrote Still Alive.

  • Omg, producers should give you award for it...

  • ROFLOL this is amazing. The song is funny and this arrangement is amazing.

  • this is probsbly the best arrangement I've heard of this song.

I also absolutely love how the singer sings this with a big twinkle in the eye. That and as well the awesome uptempo part in the middle of the song catch the ironic nature of the original.

    Friggin awesome.

  • wonderful

  • I thought it was pretty darn good all around

  • It was in a different timing, they made it their own. Don't make such comments if you know nothing about music.

  • Great! I love it! Valve should go there and sponsor UMGSO big time.

  • need a pianist? I need a college! lol... but no seriously!

  • This really does well for Maryland, because after seeing this, I want to move there. Then, I will attend UM and join the UMGSO. From their, I would rott my brain out on playing every video-game related song in the world. Eventually, over time, the sheer build-up of intensity and awesomeness would send me to my grave, and I'd die a happy man. Yea, that sounds about right. 5/5 guys! Woot!

  • I like this music, very good!!!

    Nice orquestra!!!

    Parabéns ^^

  • Whoa! I was just about to comment on how great the soloist's voice is when I saw xodanex's comment. I couldn't disagree more. Her voice is not only beautiful, but extremely appropriate for the context and the character. I also thought the addition of a chorus was brilliant! The arrangement wasn't trying to be a photocopy of the original; it was a celebration of the game. Yes, it was an amateur orchestra... but who cares? Thank you, Gamer Orchestra! This was wonderful.

  • Unnecessary? the choral additions really saved it imho.

  • I'm sorry, you've just completely ruined that song. The arrangement was awful and the choral additions were really unnecessary.

  • Unnecessary? That was the best part... ;P

  • Oh ho! That was so many shades of awesome that I'm now colour blind! You guys rock!

  • Sorry, I couldn't handle this, there was way too much awesome.

  • that's great!

  • not at all like the original.

  • This is the winnest win that ever came to Wintown.

  • Right on the money. Another perfect cover. A little slower then the origional. But it brings back so memories. Good Job !
