Actually asbestos was used in the soviet union for a much longer time. As far as i remember, about 15-20% of the cotton in the filter is asbestos. It should not be released into the air you breathe. Unfortunately in some older filters the fibers will start to loosen. To make it short, It is not lethal to use it but it will not give much of a protection and if "overconsumed" lead to asbestosis.
question: i took apart a mask, heated the brittle crunchy paper in it and it turned black. it is a Canadian C69 mask filter with 1970 stamped on in, so asbestos or not????
Can you cut open a filter, take out all the things inside it, wash it, and tape it back together and screw it on your mask and still be able to breath through it and stuff? (I don't care about filtering any harmful chemicals, it's only for looks.)
If you get diareah <--(not sure of spelling) you can use coal-powder and mix it with water and drink it, it will kill/absorb ALL bacteria and free you from whatever you have. Although it tastes like crap and you will most likely puke it up if you have a weak stomace.
@solitajre222 Thats BS. Most diarreah are caused by virus and not bacteria, and they are intracellular organisms, so they are not absorved by coal. Only clay works for diarreah, like kao.pectate and smecta.
@DaniloKabel I guess it doesn't.... well it is a bit old, but it still protects against tear gas. (post WWII) the only thing it shouldn't be used against is nerve gas agents. Also, i found a way to recycle used filters :) So it is safe
@Spartan117A1 no, all gas mask filters built after 1960 i belive might be 1970 do not have asbestos in them, you are perfectly safe to breathe through PBF filters aswell as GP5 filters... if you are unsure about the gp5 filter check it for a date which should be the last two numbers of the year. for example: my one was built in 1985, on the side of the filter it says '382-2-85' which i believe is the date
you know, asbestos could have been used as one of the materials in the papery part, and the fibres in it could be so small that you wouldn't notice anything when you were burning it
im 99% sure that all of them don't contain asbestos. i opened my gp-4 coffee can filter [dated 1966] and guess what. NO ASBESTOS. i've destroyed 3 gp-5 filters 1 dated 1978 NO ASBESTOS, a filter dated 1979 NO ASBESTOS and a 1983 NO ASBESTOS. now i have only 2 of them left. both 1985. i aint gonna open them, cause i use them and they do not have any asbestos.

Can someone PLEASE tell me how to open the filter to clear everything out?
BenjamOnToastGood 2 years ago
Ohhh Dude.Thats was not really easy.I used a Pliers to open it.But that wasnt good!I destroyed the lower surface a little bit.Which made it look bad.
Simply use a iron-saw-blade from a do-it-yourself store.
Cut over and arround the fold on the bottom.
Than you can easily remove the "cap".
For the layer with the coal in it (0:18,the silver thing with holes) use a screwdriver, stick it in one of this holes, bend it a little bit up.

Is it the same filter used for the Russian PMG gas-mask
qwerty474 2 years ago
@qwerty474 yes, the russians only have two kinds of filters:
PBF cheek filters and
normal russian standard GP-5,PMG,and other GPmasks filters
