Hi, THANK YOU so much for your video. My partner and I are pretty sure he has Aspergers. I remember we went to a Psychiatrist once trying to get him diagnosed..... he dismissed us immediately because Jamie "spoke to well" (seriously, wtf!?). Your videos have really helped me understand HIM a lot better. Thank You!
I'm stopping in on this, this video from wow.. THREE yrs ago, to say I LOVE YOUU ..lol vitrually. there's a lot of aspie youtube vids that I can't relate to which causes me to furthur doubt my self-diagnosis, but everything you say i relate to so well. it's just very well said and i really appreciate it!
I have Asperger's Syndrome as well. I think I was diagnosed during elementary school, so I had an IEP throughout most of my time in elementary, middle, and high school. I have also learned to overcome, more or less, many of the obstacles presented by Asperger's Syndrome, such as having an extremely hard time reading body language or thinking in a very literal sense.
It'd be nice if you could change the title to a fuller one, but other than that this video's great. I think it explains the condition really well (and with a humorous touch might I add?).
Yes, exactly. I wasn't diagnosed until I was into my 30s, and had all sorts of social problems as a result of not really knowing what the hell was going on. Well, I still have the social problems, but at least I know why now.
Please give not credence to the negative comments made by trolls on your video. I feel you are very brave and as an aspie who was undiagnosed until about 35 years old (when my daughter was diagnose) I can completely understand your perspective, which is really saying something! @aspend :-D The desire to make people "normal" is a strong one even from (and perhaps especially from) accomplished people such as those who are trying to help. That's something I think NTs and everyone else could benefit greatly from changing. If the system doesn't cope well with non-typical traits in people then clearly the system is innadequate.
So true Khono. Evolutionarily speaking, humans have dominated the globe by being incredibly versatile and capable of adapting. IMO, Asperger's is just another adaptive trait if looked at correctly. AS brains may sacrifice some traditional social skills in order to improve other cognitive skills. Personally, I don't look at AS as a disorder or disease. It's just a different operating system. Everyone else is Windows and we're Linux. We're worse at some things, but better at others! =)
You've done a great job in explaining how Asperger's effects your life and how you perceive the world. I wish I had your courage. You sound so refined and so normal in front of the camera, as if it hardly exists. I, too have Asperger's.
Aspergers leads to behavoral problems. And yup, for certain, einstien had aspergers. He found it hard to communicate, he did not speak till age four, he was constantly obsessed, he had trouble at school....
Actually, one way I learned how to read facial expressions, and then form the same, appropriate facial expressions was through drawing portraits. I've drawn about 200 detailed (realistic) portraits and thousands of doodled faces over the last 5 years and my ability to read and respond to facial expressions has improved immensely.
@AinuLaire: Hey that's really cool! What a great synergy between career (hobby?) and improved social interaction! If only I wasn't hopeless at drawing I'd totally try that :)
Eye contact is BAD. 4 some reason people with either "Asperger" {as Burger} or "Autism" have a hard time making eye contact. If u have it u realize u can kind of read what someone is thinking 4 example if someone is sad u can sense it. Depending on how strong your senses r some1's emotions could affect yours there are more examples. I look at this disease like having a sixth sense it makes it harder to communicate because engaging in conversations sometimes make your heart race fast.
Kingster, I feel the same way. I may not be able to "read" other people's emotions accurately, or respond to them appropriately, but I definitely "sense" them almost physically. Especially the negative emotions. Anger and hostility are like a hot wave that crashes. Sadness and depression feel like a heavy dull weight. It is so overwhelming sometimes I can feel my heart beat, and I can't breathe well. I hate it when they say we have no empathy, or we have no concept of others' emotions!
@Amy2838: Indeed it irritates me to hear people say we lack empathy. We're wired differently so it may appear and manifest itself differently as well has have trouble being expressed with our social issues. That doesn't mean it's not there.
@IWannabeJew: Hah; what a funny connection. I was just reading about how Helena Bonham Carter believes her...common-law? partner; Tim Burton; has Apergers tendencies. The lighting in this video is very reminiscent of scenes in which Ms. Carter is in (like Harry Potter and Sweeney Todd).
I don't have any disorders whatsoever, but I'm still socially awkward. The only one who I can have good satisfying conversation with is myself. Yes, that is very, very weird.
Still not convinced that people are being accurately diagnosed though.
There are a LOT of 'Aspies' who think they have problems that are down to Asperger Syndrome when they aren't - they're just normal for most of the human race.
There is misdiagnosis going on, and also a not-very-sophisticated understanding yet of the human body, so we're using a basic label for a wide range of phenomena, and causing problems for tomorrow by doing so.
Even if you're right, it is far better to support people with these problems to have support for it than not to support them.
Granted I agree that using it as an excuse for something that isn't typically found with Aspies is contemptable (even for me, as an Aspie)
As for normal. speaking for myself, I can't remember who people are by their face unless I have seen them for a long time. especially bad when someone who I saw constantly comes to the door and I have to ask him who he is!
Scott, me too! It doesn't help their opinion of me being a self-centered weirdo either! Ha ha! I actually have family members (great aunts, second cousins, etc.) that I would not recognize if I saw them "out of context" such as in the mall or in a parking lot. I think a lot of people get offended and think I am being a snob because I don't say hello, but it's because (in my mind) they are total strangers! Humans always jump to the worst possible conclusion, and then crucify you for it.
@emanitudism: Many traits people with Aspergers have are present in neuro-typicals (NTs) yet the grouping of multiple traits together is what is used for diagnosis; not just 'being bad with people' or 'being obsessive with certain things like video games'. We aren't aliens. We have a great deal in common with NTs and come from essentially the same genetic makeup. Aspergers (and people in general) are too complicated to quantitatively pin down what caused what in many cases.
@YipManneke: People with Aspergers are often able to adapt to their situations making it difficult to diagnose adults. I've read this in many places including reputable sources (which I'm sure you can find easily so I won't try to link them here). But I do appreciate the fact that you did not state with certainty that she doesn't have Aspergers like so many others tend to do.
Aspergers is a broad group of people with different groupings of symptoms and varying degrees of coping achieved.
PLEASE check out a great Children's book about Autism, PDD and ADHD called 'Why Is He Different?' (Please spread the word about this unique book, tell your friends and tell me what you think about it. Big thanks!!). You can preview it on youtube profile called Monalisaknew. Just copy and paste the following sentence in youtube search window: 'Why Is He Different? (Autism Book)'
You can also buy this book on AthsePublishing(dot)com. Thank You !!
I do the confused face, too. I never have any emotional expressions - excitement, sadness, etc. I'm just pretty "content" or neutral about everything.
You remind me a lot of myself; even in the way you speak. I've been wondering if I have Asperger's, cos someone asked me if I did a few months ago. I researched it, and a lot of it I relate to. The only thing is that I've never had problems with facial expressions. I'm pretty observant. One thing, though, that I've always wondered about is why I don't like eye contact. Perhaps I've found the truth?
Very interesting. My partner has aspergers so I know your only telling some of the story but congratulations. Very well done. I have to say some of the comments make me think these people are seriously under educated. Do they even speak English. Look forward to next video.
But employers don't see it that way. If they don't want Aspies working for them, they'll find a way to stop it and say the applicant lacked some other critical requisite to the job. I wouldn't mention it either - better to work for them and show them how good you are, THEN tell them. Imagine the perfect burn that would be.
It depends on whether someone needs the support mentioning it affords. I interview very poorly so need to - I have little to no chance of getting a job otherwise. Despite laws like DDA most employers still discriminate against disabilities, particularly mental or mental health related. It is near impossible to prove they have discriminated against you simply because they did not offer you the job, so most employers still get away with it. There's still a long way to go!
From personal experience (my employer wanted to dump an employee with dyslexia and another employer fired a black guy as soon as he saw that was whom I hired) this is very much a problem. If you're gonna disclose any issues like Aspergers; be sure to do so after you've proved you're a better-than-average worker :)
My son (24 yrs. old) has undiagnosed AS, but I believe he has it now that I have researched it on my own. I haven't told him about it yet, because I don't know how to help him. Most of the help I've come across has to do with small children in school. I love this video, and I think I will share it with him, along with her other videos. THANKS! You've helped more than anything I've come across.
@MrFishsauce: I can't speak for your son but for myself; my mum suspected for a while that I had Aspergers but chose not to tell me about it. I really wish she had as feeling that I'm not just a failure is a big help as is the renewed faith in the system being capable of helping me!
you said you have to think about things before you do them. for ex you were talking about a job interview. well im exactly the same, i find it much much easier to write someone an email then to tell them something in person. im a dj, i make hip hop beats and i use turntables, but i can NOT freestyle or really rap for the most part. i have problems formulating responses to things people have to say immediatley and i have to think about them for a while. i probably have mild aspergers i imagine...
(cont.) I've TRIED making videos about this, but I end up looking legit retarded. You did an AMAZING job at explaining and speaking fluently! It's amazing that you were only diagnosed with Asperger's a few years ago and you're already so great at this! (Well, it's probably because you're an adult...but STILL xD!)
I have either AS or NLD, but no one is sure of what exactly to diagnose me with. I have symptoms of both supposedly, but TBH I can't tell the difference at this point between the two.
I was "diagnosed" with HFA in early elementary school, if I remember correctly. I'm turning 15 this month. My disability is still a struggle for me, but every year I mature tremendously, especially this year. (I recently finished freshman year at a very small private high school school that specializes in AS/NLD.)
I have aspergers syndrome too, i'm 19 and only got diagnosed when i was 17, i went through school finding it really hard to make friends and always felt different from everyone else. Like you i'm also good with computers, art, i did photography/filmography in college and i'm good at playing the guitar. No one else in my family has autism and my boyfriend is only just understanding why i struggle with day to day activities, i think more people need to be more aware of aspergers syndrome.
I have aspergers I was dignosed when I was 3 years old and the school that I went to told me that i am autism success story b/c I started out having mild autism to very high fuctioning autism. Once I got to the end of my sophmore year I did not need to be in specal ed classes any more but I was still in it just in case I need it. I am going to go to college to become a cheif b/c I am very good at cooking I cook better than my parents.
Hello.....look i really do appreciate your story, very inspiring...i must say though i was a little dissapointed when you said you werent autistic and banging your head against a wall....my little boy has just been diagnosed with autism, and like u.. i think he has amazing and beautiful qualities...i was just a little hurt to hear u say that autistic kids get to that point, it is such a broad spectrum..please dont take it the wrong way
Bikiniatrist. I do appreciate your video. Many of us do not know they are autistic. I am one also and I have an autistic child. The more I think about it the more I realize why I feel like this.
i also have aspergers , and im 24 . and i have some big trouble handling my social life and in my job too.. if i get to have a job :P .. im always sabotaging myself and then regret it with my heart because i have no sense of "consecuence"... its funny aint it? how the same sindrome...works in different ways on different people...
Heya. Awesome video. It's enlightening to see another female's view because I also have aspergers and I know there's not many girls out there with it. I have a video on my youtube as well. Check it out if you want.
I know some doubt you have Asperger's but I believe you have the condition. Aspergianstar2009 isn't a psychologist and doesn't qualify to say whether one has the condition or not. Don't you just hate those people who think they know every thing/
She is about as AS as Obama. I am sorry but I got shot down for speaking my mind about her. She is a brilliant artist no doubt about that. But why pretend to be autistic when cleary by her other videos she is not. Why does she need to wear a skanty bikni to get her point across. She could be bipolar or ADD or ADHD. But she definatly is not Autistic.
I don't think you can make blanket statements about her unless you know more about her. There is not enough information from her videos to diagnose her or undiagnose her so please don't try (this is a response to Aspergianstar but for some reason Youtube responses tend to post in the wrong place so this probably will too)
So i guess every one that are normal look the same and act the same what no?
Quick remind, people with asberger are people like your self. They are difrent and i know this since i my self got asberger and unlike bikiniartist i can't get my self to make videos like this and so on >>>
I have autism, and I was one of the most popular kids in school. Nobody ever knew I had it. But the weird thing is.. When I got older I started too have the negative symptoms like not making eye contact, and hard time making decisions. But like I said all threw my school years I made perfect eye contact, was very talkative and also very active. And I was also great in sports and was asked too play in college but I denied cause I was lazy.
Well, I must say that you have had quite an experience. I'm very shy and crowds make me very nervous. Sometimes I have sudden outburts when I feel overwhelmed. When I was younger I was put on this medication called "Ritalin" which was a Hormone supressor. Right now i'm in college and I'm having a pretty tough time with it, but people like my sister just claim me as a "Lost Case." Anyway I like drawing and writing too. It helps me calm down. So does smoking but I should quit while I'm young.
Also, what annoys me the most is that people think I'm autistic too when I'm not, so I say your kinda lucky that people can't usually tell that you're autistic, because people think I'm autistic and I'm not.
I can understand you. A couple of people in my family are autistic. They can handle crowds, unlike some autistic people. People sometimes get mad at me for doing something to them that would normally bother another autistic person, but it doesn't really bother them, and I know it doesn't. I always tell people that not all autistic people are the same. :)
One focuses on Legos, and another focuses on his quarter collection with pictures of states on them, and yeah. :)
If only half of my friends were as normal as you are!
There's a wide spectrum of normal human behavior, but our clinicians and drug companies wish to narrow that band in order to diagnose many with "an affliction that requires therapists($), shrinks($) and drugs($)".
As long as you can hold down a job, refrain from destructive addictions to drugs/alcohol then you are a well adjusted human being-whether or not you are considered "popular" or have lots of friends.

Khono 1 year ago
So true Khono. Evolutionarily speaking, humans have dominated the globe by being incredibly versatile and capable of adapting. IMO, Asperger's is just another adaptive trait if looked at correctly. AS brains may sacrifice some traditional social skills in order to improve other cognitive skills. Personally, I don't look at AS as a disorder or disease. It's just a different operating system. Everyone else is Windows and we're Linux. We're worse at some things, but better at others! =)

Actually, asperger people have a behavoral problem. Einstien had asperger's syndrome.
1234yersiman 2 years ago
They don't really. They have different structures, in the brain, the areas specifically effected: Communication/BodyLanguage/Motoric iirc.
Einstein probably had aspergers syndrome. Alot of other guys too. Bertrand russell, Newton have been suspsected to have it too.. not certain though.
Rawnesss 2 years ago
Aspergers leads to behavoral problems. And yup, for certain, einstien had aspergers. He found it hard to communicate, he did not speak till age four, he was constantly obsessed, he had trouble at school....
1234yersiman 2 years ago
incorrect, he had autism.
and yes and no with the behavioral problem. I myself have no problems with anger or depression.
though I would say the best way to over come such issues is to go into theatre.

Hey, Aspie artist here as well :)

I look at this disease like having a sixth sense it makes it harder to communicate because engaging in conversations sometimes make your heart race fast.
kingster1978 2 years ago
Kingster, I feel the same way. I may not be able to "read" other people's emotions accurately, or respond to them appropriately, but I definitely "sense" them almost physically. Especially the negative emotions. Anger and hostility are like a hot wave that crashes. Sadness and depression feel like a heavy dull weight. It is so overwhelming sometimes I can feel my heart beat, and I can't breathe well. I hate it when they say we have no empathy, or we have no concept of others' emotions!
Amy2838 2 years ago
@Amy2838: Indeed it irritates me to hear people say we lack empathy. We're wired differently so it may appear and manifest itself differently as well has have trouble being expressed with our social issues. That doesn't mean it's not there.

Very cool of you to talk about it like this. :)
dagmik1 2 years ago
Good video.
Raises lots of questions.
Still not convinced that people are being accurately diagnosed though.
There are a LOT of 'Aspies' who think they have problems that are down to Asperger Syndrome when they aren't - they're just normal for most of the human race.
There is misdiagnosis going on, and also a not-very-sophisticated understanding yet of the human body, so we're using a basic label for a wide range of phenomena, and causing problems for tomorrow by doing so.
emanitudism 2 years ago
Even if you're right, it is far better to support people with these problems to have support for it than not to support them.
Granted I agree that using it as an excuse for something that isn't typically found with Aspies is contemptable (even for me, as an Aspie)
As for normal. speaking for myself, I can't remember who people are by their face unless I have seen them for a long time. especially bad when someone who I saw constantly comes to the door and I have to ask him who he is!
ScottTheAtheist 2 years ago
Scott, me too! It doesn't help their opinion of me being a self-centered weirdo either! Ha ha! I actually have family members (great aunts, second cousins, etc.) that I would not recognize if I saw them "out of context" such as in the mall or in a parking lot. I think a lot of people get offended and think I am being a snob because I don't say hello, but it's because (in my mind) they are total strangers! Humans always jump to the worst possible conclusion, and then crucify you for it.
Amy2838 2 years ago
@emanitudism: Many traits people with Aspergers have are present in neuro-typicals (NTs) yet the grouping of multiple traits together is what is used for diagnosis; not just 'being bad with people' or 'being obsessive with certain things like video games'. We aren't aliens. We have a great deal in common with NTs and come from essentially the same genetic makeup. Aspergers (and people in general) are too complicated to quantitatively pin down what caused what in many cases.
Khono 1 year ago
@emanitudism: perhaps you could give some specific examples of aspies misattributing issues to Aspergers.
Khono 1 year ago
i am confused weather i have aspergers or not.
i have a lot of the traits but i can function socially it just drains me a lot & i have to go & recharge after talking with people.
i also get obsessed with my own research & prefer to be on my own.
i think i learned to act well in social situations, but its all an act & very few people understand me.

Good vid but, at interviews, don't be afraid to mention disabilities, the disability discrimination act is there for a reason!
Other thing is, I agree with your wiki statement, don't always rely on wiki! How true!
jogtheviking 2 years ago
But employers don't see it that way. If they don't want Aspies working for them, they'll find a way to stop it and say the applicant lacked some other critical requisite to the job. I wouldn't mention it either - better to work for them and show them how good you are, THEN tell them. Imagine the perfect burn that would be.
CosmosFan1 2 years ago
It depends on whether someone needs the support mentioning it affords. I interview very poorly so need to - I have little to no chance of getting a job otherwise. Despite laws like DDA most employers still discriminate against disabilities, particularly mental or mental health related. It is near impossible to prove they have discriminated against you simply because they did not offer you the job, so most employers still get away with it. There's still a long way to go!
anewman1980 2 years ago
From personal experience (my employer wanted to dump an employee with dyslexia and another employer fired a black guy as soon as he saw that was whom I hired) this is very much a problem. If you're gonna disclose any issues like Aspergers; be sure to do so after you've proved you're a better-than-average worker :)

BlackLabsLikeRuleDog 2 years ago

I've always been happier alone.
