The decision not to join the NATO was a patriotic move, ironically by Charles de Gaulle. True, for building the carrier there could have been many reasons. But it is an outcome of this move. Just another hint: Germany also makes the most modern Submarine and best Diesel-Electric Submarine in the World, the U-Boat Type 212. Just so you dont think the only thing Germany can do is Panzers ;) When they do it, they're very often best in it. That was the reason for my assumption in the first place.

The Eurofighter is at least as good as the Rafale, and if Pilot skills are better? Arguable. But let me state my point AGAIN. I think it was irrational of France to not be in the NATO, thus having to do their military relations alone. If France would have overcome their "patriotism", they wouldnt have to build a carrier (but rely on the US like all other NATO members) and join the Eurofighter (EF) project. It would have made the EF even better and cheaper! WinWin situation. Get what I wanna say?

I repeat to you: I wouldn' t have left NATO if I was the President or a member of the French Congress, but it was their decision.

So it's not so easy to analyse from outside. We do not know all the facts involved, many of them are Top Secret. But yes, I see your point.

About the Eurofighter: yes, it's very good too. Both are listed as the ten most dangerous 5th generation Air Fighters nowadays.

About Germany paying, I don't think you're right, there is no liaison on all those costs with other EU Countries, specially from 60s to 90s. And Panzers? You're talking about 2nd World War craft? Everybody knows the first strategy option to dominate the enemy lies in the AIR, not ground. And French are worldwide known for their Technology & Pilot skills, you have to agree with that.

Air domination is important true. But Terrorist and Rebels are the by far most common enemies of modern armies. They usually do not own any Aircraft's. You can bomb them, but in order to control a country and fight terrorists, domination of the land is VERY important and aircraft's can just support the army. Thus Tanks are very important to modern warfare.

No of course Panzers cant do it alone. It has to be a good mix. My point in this whole argument was just that the EU should work together, as in teamwork more can be achieved even easier. Panzers are cheap to develop, but Fighter jets an carriers not. There at least in the EU all should work together. France would be a very strong and important partner for such military projects. Thats why it is a bit sad to me they do their own thing, and for unclear reasons.

I never said there's a liaison nor that there are subsidies for military projects, I said it harms the EU budget in Long-Term as France has less money due to their extra expenses. France also purchases less EU produced military goods AND doesnt join military project cooperation's, which costs to EU and members of EU-internal projects (which again indirectly harms the whole EU). Its economics. Its cheaper to execute one project than two, as research, development etc. has to be done only once.

And lets be reasonable, with America as an Ally, and the EU does France really need its OWN carrier (USA has enough) and Fighter Jets (there is the Eurofighter available)? As I said, the reason for them having all these things is not military strategy, but just patriotism. And as you indicated, the Costs just for a carrier are immense, I dont think patriotism justifies these type of expenses...

First of all, lol369, you have to keep in mind that France had an independant politic from NATO from the 60s until very recently (when under Sarkozy, France decided to be part of it again). So, this Carrier was taken care by themselves during decades of some quite 'independance' by the French military forces (though a true state of independency never existed since the 2nd half of last Century).

About 'being paid by the Germans' or by the other European Countries, it really doesn't work like that. Until the last twenty years, the budget decisions worked out very differently from the way it's done today in Europe. So don't worry, CDG wasn't paid or costed by Germany.

If Germany could do better than that? Who knows? That's speculation. Maybe the English could, or the Chinese....... But that's not a proof, is there?

WRONG, there is actually plans for making another aircraft carrier for France, yes it will be bigger than the Charles De Gaulle, but it will definitely not be the biggest of all, actually that new aircraft carrier will be between 6574,000 tonnes, compared to the Nimitz class aircraft carriers, which they are about 103,000 tons, fully loaded, those are the best aircraft carriers, imagine the new Gerald R Ford class coming out, it should be ready in 2015, that is the future of aircraft carriers.
