Well, the Charles de Gaulle is the only nuclear carrier outside the US. And the first we built in France. SO it has normal flaws due to the development of a new technology. Believe me, US nuclear carrier had their lot of problems at the beginning.
Guys i m french and i prefer that we do alone "our work" ;), moreover rafale powned the eurofighter in dogfight : 7-1 so i think that it s a good thing if we dont join this project like FELIN Sytem Combat and others... it s a shame for me to share the cdg to UK, but in 2012 when sarkozy will fall down, we will re cary it ;)
They were busy scrapping the Clemenceau near my house, in northern England. But the French were prudent enough to invest in another fine capital ship and top-rung fighters. Unlike my countrymen. Tragedy.
As we could go on forever about this, lets get to an end. Both of us dont have enough facts about this matter anyways. But I still think it was a good discussion. Especially for a youtube threat. Usually swearwords come up after the second comment.
The decision not to join the NATO was a patriotic move, ironically by Charles de Gaulle. True, for building the carrier there could have been many reasons. But it is an outcome of this move. Just another hint: Germany also makes the most modern Submarine and best Diesel-Electric Submarine in the World, the U-Boat Type 212. Just so you dont think the only thing Germany can do is Panzers ;) When they do it, they're very often best in it. That was the reason for my assumption in the first place.
The Eurofighter is at least as good as the Rafale, and if Pilot skills are better? Arguable. But let me state my point AGAIN. I think it was irrational of France to not be in the NATO, thus having to do their military relations alone. If France would have overcome their "patriotism", they wouldnt have to build a carrier (but rely on the US like all other NATO members) and join the Eurofighter (EF) project. It would have made the EF even better and cheaper! WinWin situation. Get what I wanna say?
Yes, I see your point, but I'm not sure it was a question of Patriotism. Remember that, at that time, the influences on both sides (US / USSR) were huge, the French government did not like that. I repeat to you: I wouldn' t have left NATO if I was the President or a member of the French Congress, but it was their decision.
The question is: what are the advantages of your Country having a Carrier for our own? It's a Costs x Rewards situation. I'm sure they have analysed that, Militars and Congress. So it's not so easy to analyse from outside. We do not know all the facts involved, many of them are Top Secret. But yes, I see your point.
About the Eurofighter: yes, it's very good too. Both are listed as the ten most dangerous 5th generation Air Fighters nowadays.
@lol369 wrong a fighter who can't go on carrier ... wouldn't be as good the "rafale" sorry dude ... EF can just make air superiority on your territory and after ? it has only not enough options to be cast on a modern operations theater ...
You need to project to cast EF on modern war far away great brittain ? you absolutely necessary to have allies nearness of the target has ... and if your allies don't afraid by retaliations by the country targeted ...

EF will stay a technological window which does not serve has thing big blocked in british, spain and germain air space ... Just defence for conflicts which will never again take place in europe except balkans countries ... can be ... can be
About Germany paying, I don't think you're right, there is no liaison on all those costs with other EU Countries, specially from 60s to 90s. And Panzers? You're talking about 2nd World War craft? Everybody knows the first strategy option to dominate the enemy lies in the AIR, not ground. And French are worldwide known for their Technology & Pilot skills, you have to agree with that.
Air domination is important true. But Terrorist and Rebels are the by far most common enemies of modern armies. They usually do not own any Aircraft's. You can bomb them, but in order to control a country and fight terrorists, domination of the land is VERY important and aircraft's can just support the army. Thus Tanks are very important to modern warfare.
Yes, the Aircrafts cannot defeat Terrorism alone. But Panzers / Tanks as well, right?
And even though, without the Air Support, it would be VERY hard to deal with Terrorists, just like in Afghanistan and other focuses, you have to agree with that......
Now, I'm NOT justifying innocent people dead by air bombing, that's not the case. I'm just talking about the strategy. (Nice discussion, B.T.W.)
No of course Panzers cant do it alone. It has to be a good mix. My point in this whole argument was just that the EU should work together, as in teamwork more can be achieved even easier. Panzers are cheap to develop, but Fighter jets an carriers not. There at least in the EU all should work together. France would be a very strong and important partner for such military projects. Thats why it is a bit sad to me they do their own thing, and for unclear reasons.
I never said there's a liaison nor that there are subsidies for military projects, I said it harms the EU budget in Long-Term as France has less money due to their extra expenses. France also purchases less EU produced military goods AND doesnt join military project cooperation's, which costs to EU and members of EU-internal projects (which again indirectly harms the whole EU). Its economics. Its cheaper to execute one project than two, as research, development etc. has to be done only once.
Exactly: as long as I know, EU subvention does not cover all military stuff, except for some projects such as Typhoon which is multi-nation agreement (GER-ITA-UK).
@ lol369: Maybe not leaving NATO would be the smartest option, I would never leave NATO if I was France, but it was their choice on the 60s and it does not impeach one to build their on carriers (just look at England).
I have an idea of the costs (proly billions in total) and I do not deny France is building the best Fighter Jets in Western Europe, and that France/US etc. spend more on military.
I just said the Germans COULD do better then them. They dont because they dont even try. Why? Because of their History (WW2), and being economical (there is no need to do these military project without other nations as partners). Money would not be a problem though, as Germany is the biggest Economic power in Europe.
Germany also pays the highest amount of money to the EU, thus indirectly paying for this carrier, and Fighter Jets made by France. Thus if France decides to execute these super-expensive military projects, Germany has to pay for them too.
And lets be reasonable, with America as an Ally, and the EU does France really need its OWN carrier (USA has enough) and Fighter Jets (there is the Eurofighter available)? As I said, the reason for them having all these things is not military strategy, but just patriotism. And as you indicated, the Costs just for a carrier are immense, I dont think patriotism justifies these type of expenses...
First of all, lol369, you have to keep in mind that France had an independant politic from NATO from the 60s until very recently (when under Sarkozy, France decided to be part of it again). So, this Carrier was taken care by themselves during decades of some quite 'independance' by the French military forces (though a true state of independency never existed since the 2nd half of last Century).
About 'being paid by the Germans' or by the other European Countries, it really doesn't work like that. Until the last twenty years, the budget decisions worked out very differently from the way it's done today in Europe. So don't worry, CDG wasn't paid or costed by Germany.
If Germany could do better than that? Who knows? That's speculation. Maybe the English could, or the Chinese....... But that's not a proof, is there?
France unnecessarily executing military projects harms the EU budget in Long-Term. Especially joint European military projects get more expensive cause France does its own thing, thus is no partner in production nor a consumer of military goods. Very indirectly but nevertheless Germany does pay. If Germany could do better? Maybe. But Panzers are, after Ships, and Aircrafts the most important machines in war. Look at the "Leopard 2" and "PzH 2000". Made in Germany and best in the world...
If the French needed all these things just because they were not in the NATO, why not join the NATO? Because they wanted to be a great nation, militarily powerful etc. What is the underlying feeling that creates such desires? Patriotism! So, my way or your way, this carrier and the other expensive military projects were not strategically necessary.
France having a carrier is just unnecessary. With it they just try to compensate their complexes of being militarily f*cked in the a*s so many times in recent history.
If required the germans could build a carrier a lot better than this in no time.
Easy Talk........... You have no idea of a cost of a carrier like this, with 13 years autonomy, and the capacity of blowing up an entire nation.
In case you don't have memory, let me remind you that the first four nations in terms of military budget are USA/Russia/England/France, and where is Germany again?
Since the 70s France has developped the best 4th / 5th generation Fighter Jets in Western Europe. And you can't deny that.
Great video. How many Rafale's are carried on board? When the British commision the 2 new carriers they are building (if their gov doesnt sabotage it) all of the world's aircraft carriers will be operated by US, France, UK. Yes I know about Kusnetsov, but she is a class of 1, and there are no new Russian carriers coming on line. China yes, but not yet. and leonleonceur, you are wrong.
There are a few aircraft in the ship, but including the rafale's there are 40, that's total, not sure how many rafale's by it self, probably a bit over 25.
WRONG, there is actually plans for making another aircraft carrier for France, yes it will be bigger than the Charles De Gaulle, but it will definitely not be the biggest of all, actually that new aircraft carrier will be between 6574,000 tonnes, compared to the Nimitz class aircraft carriers, which they are about 103,000 tons, fully loaded, those are the best aircraft carriers, imagine the new Gerald R Ford class coming out, it should be ready in 2015, that is the future of aircraft carriers.

Apres on dit americain premier puissance!
Superb images, and wonderful editting. Maybe some Photek or RJD2, ou Justice. Quelque chose "Juicy, Fruiteux".

Is flying an unknown aircraft as easy as driving a new car for experienced fighter pilots?
Could for example a russian good pilot jump in a eurofighter, a rafale or even a F-22 and fly it?

Typical stupid chav attitude. Have you noticed how he didn't say Britain, he said Europe. If we leave the EU we won't matter to the US at all.

Rafale is a wonderful aircraft. Able to do a lot of missions , and be used on aircraft carriers or not. Good Job !

It may not be quite as good as the Eurofighter, but at least our allies across the channel have one hell of a fighter jet to their name.
I'm glad this is a NATO plane, otherwise we would have a hell of a fight on our hands.

Magnifique.

venerable35 4 years ago

Apres on dit americain premier puissance!

@franck

Poor moron, stay at home.

Superb images, and wonderful editting. Maybe some Photek or RJD2, ou Justice. Quelque chose "Juicy, Fruiteux".

DuguesclinBZH 5 years ago
SUPERSCIENCE01 5 years ago
SUPERSCIENCE01 5 years ago
