There is a book called maximum boost I think by someone like Corkney Bell, probably spelt wrong. this is a recommended read, before embarking on a turbo project, the mixture they talk about is the Air fuel Ratio under boost conditions mine is around 11:1 too much ignition timing can also be a real turbo engine killer so good tuning is a must. hope this helps.
yeah i suppose i should, library, thats the big place with all those "book ja ma call its" right? do those still exist? :) I know what you mean about the haynes manual being confusing though, i have one for my buick and it covers alot of material but its pretty vague and uses terminology that if you knew, you probably wouldn't need the book in the first place.
Hi smoothjamskillmoure, they're not the quietest engines and mine failed sound test at my first track session, I have since fitted another silencer so is a little quieter, but still sounds sporty when pushed, not sure how quiet you can make them as i've always liked the purr of the engine. A 280zx and 240z both use the same type of engine so will sound very similar, hope this helps and good luck with the project.
That is helpful, is the L20A 2.0 litre straight-6 SOHC engine what you are talking about? I took that from wikipedia, can you put a turbo, preferably two turbos directly on to this engine, also is it possible to put a nissan skyline engine in a 240z since they are both nissan, would you have to cut out engine space if you did? Also this silencer, does that go directly on the engine or is that something for the exhaust? What is a good source of info for finding what can be done 2 a car?
Continued: I know I sound like a tardo with all of these questions but Im a computer guy not a car guru but everyones gotta start somewhere right? Also with a turbo, is that bad for your engine, I know it gives more HP and MPG but it seems odd recycling the exhaust from your engine and putting it back into it, since cars have an air filter to stop polluted air from entering the engine. Am I missing something here? Does a second turbo stack on the first or go on the other exhaust out? Thanks zed
You've missed something there for sure, the turbo dosn't recycle exhaust gases by putting them back into the engine. It uses the exhaust gases to drive a turbine which in turn powers a compressor to increase the density of the clean air entering the engine. That's the simple explanation anyway.
As for a twin turbo set up, there's two commonly used set ups. Parallel and sequential.
Parallel being where two identical turbo's equally split turbocharging duties.....
A Sequenrial set-up is where one turbo is utilized at low speeds and another (or both) at higher speeds (talking engine speeds here). Which is obviously designed to reduce 'turbo-lag'.
Ok so ive been doing a little research on turbos, so far I get how they work i think, but what i dont understand is what people are talking about when they say adjusting the mix, Do they mean how much fuel is coming in to compensate for extra air? Also ive read that the engine needs to be prepared to compensate for extra pressure? Its been alot more difficult to find good info than i was thinking it would be. Maybe Im just not looking in the right places or is it kind of a trade secret scenario?
If I'm honest, the internet isn't the best place to be looking for a fundamental understanding, you're best off heading to the library and seeing what books they have there. There's also a few haynes manuals which you mite find useful, like "4 Stroke Performance Tuning" which is an incredibly good source of info, although can be a bit complicated at times.
Ok car guys I have a question for this video since you guys seem to know what your talking about and it isint just a bunch of kids badmouthing each other on this video. Im looking to start my first project car, Im looking at a 240z or a 280zx but leaning towards 240z, is it possible to give this car a very low engine noise, like a quiet hum you hear in newer cars, but still have that sharp whip crack you hear when the turbo engages. I love that sound and was hoping there is a way to isolate it.
On another note if you have very little practical experience I'd suggest starting with something cheaper and easier to work with to give you something to practice the skills that'll be required with a z project.
Although I don't want to be telling you what to do, it's just my 2 cents. I came to this conclusion a little while back, but I'm still determined to find myself a z project at some point soon ;)
Point taken, ive been looking at some of the stuff to work on these cars and its a bit intimidating, so far ive had experience working on VW engines which seem simple because everything is out and where you can see it, plus the only thing that ever seems to go wrong is electrical which im not bad at,. I was also looking at grabbing an MGB GT, theyre fast small and pretty cheap. Do you have any suggestions on these cars as difficulty to work on?
Is it possible to put twin turbo onto the L series engine and tune it up to around 650HP in real life just like the one in the wangan midnight anime?.
@dog155065 Of course! Maybe a bit tricky though if planning to use triple carbs. You would have to have the experience with the carbs if you plan to crank it up to those numbers.
In all my time helping operate a dyno, 10% does indeed seem a smidge low, and you probably are putting a bit more up there, I usually saw a 15-20% for most 2wd vehicles.
I am going back to the Dyno after leaning out the boost table, high rpm boost were 10:1 and even lower, there now at around 11.6:1 running water/ alcohol injection so should see better figures.
Awesome! looking forward to the numbers. Please let us know what you get and on how much boost. Imo 11.5 on water injection is pretty conservative, if not overly conservative. Dont be too scared to go further- but as always talk to a proper tuner and not some n00b such as myself.

Easier to work on? than a z? unless youre working with legos it doesnt get much easier than a z. Your only worry is rust sealing things in place.

How did you figure 10% drivetrain loss?
SidewaysGts 3 years ago
They use a type of transmission brake .the reading, I thought that a loss of 10% was a bit low myself. maybe it's putting out more at the flywheel.
