Piracy is one of those types of things that will never go away. Someone somewhere is going to figure out a way to bypass DRM in any way shape or form. Heck the more difficult it is the more likely someone will be determined to hack/crack it just because it's that way. The only people who have to deal with the buggy/inconsistent DRM's are legal customers.
Games should be way cheaper. Atleast for the downloadable versions which doesn't require fancy packaging, DVDs, booklets etc.
Some games, even for the download are up to or over 70 bucks. Now as a lot of people interested in games are younger, they can't always pay those amounts.
Content for those paying and better prices would most likely spin the bad trend around.
I spent this entire video trying to figure out a different ways to place those shoes on the the door in the background. That s*** needs to be in a zigzag pattern.
I found it really weird that I had actually subscribed to you in the past, yet it feels like I had just discovered you through TotalBiscuit and Jesse lol. I dunno, weird stuff :P
I pirate some of my games too, but saying you do then adding that it's justified and doesn't hurt the sale is bullshit. there are 5x more people to pirate a game n not buy it later even if they like it, than those who do. y'all just saying stuff like that cuz ya falling for that internet mob effect and it benefits you. it's okay to be a theft once in awhile.
@ErtomicV it's really kind of hard to say how many people would have done this or how many people would do that, but the fact is that there is a portion of people who pirate that would NEVER have bought it in the first place.
Origin sucks something horrible. I have it because it is needed for games like ME3 and Syndicate, but I don’t understand EA's decision to go up against steam when their software is still in beta and buggy as hell. Especially when you will need Origin for most new EA titles regardless if they are boxed version or not. Also, you probably have already, but if you have not seen any of Gabe Newell's interviews or comments on piracy, then you should. They are a pretty profound take on the issue.
@maceman1984 Business wise, it makes perfect sense, digital distribution is growing by leaps and bounds, and there's an obvious incentive to cutting out the middle man. But am I not going to resent them for it? Hardly. I've made my choice, and I am going to be pissed off if they're going to keep their games origin exclusive. It's their choice for sure, but it will also be my choice to not buy any of their games at all.
@playguu Yeah, I hear ya. I understand their driving force behind the decision, but not the idea to release Origin when it is still in beta. I actually like some of the features that Origin has and that they are adding , however their entire well being in the PC market is being bet on this one piece of software that is in beta and still really buggy. I think that it will be interesting to see if they can remain a top contender for PC gamers with this decision.
u know if a game isn't good enough to buy let the damn company fail alot of pirates i bet buy the game later down the road if they believe it is worth their hard earn cash it is bullshit companies think they earn the cash if their game is shit
When you mentioned Phoenix Wright I remembered that I read ages ago about the Miles Edgeworth game and never picked it up and I just googled it and discovered it came out like two years ago so now I'm going to buy and play it and it's going to be ossuuuuuum, so thanks for reminding me.
I remember playing Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney again on on iPhone, and when you read the reviews in the App Store, 95% of people who bought the game beg Capcom to release the other games.
It's been a long time coming, but I'm SUPER EXCITED for their release. I wouldn't have known about it, unless you told me. Thank you, Dodger! <3
I hate to come across as a freemarketeer, but if the companies can't make money using their current buisness model, in the current enviornment...they deserve to go bankrupt. Piracy isn't going anywhere, and the heavy-handed attempts to control it are doing plenty of damage to the industry on their own. Instead of shutting down everything, companies need to develop other revenue streams. One that comes to mind is selling advertising in games. Billboards for example. Anarchy Online does it.
@RevivalMH I see your point, but unfortunately don't believe it. Yes, I'm sure there is a percentage of people that wouldn't buy the game if not given the chance at piracy, but I would be willing to bet that IF PIRACY DID NOT EXIST AS AN OPTION (caps lock for emphasis), well over 50% of piraters (or is it just pirates?) would buy the games they currently steal. The fact is that a person cares enough to pirate the game, so if that wasn't an option then maybe they would find the money to buy a g

@MrJackCookie "they solved piracy with hats" is a bit of an exaggeration. And if they did solve it with such a simple method then by god Valve is even more amazing than i thought. It's all about service, Steam has an excellent infrastructure and the company is well trusted and respected by gamers. There's also 50-75% off sales.
Gabe Newell has always been respected about his stance on piracy. "Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem."
@playguu Yeah, I was trying to think of something that fit the character limit and that sounded the most exiting, I'm aware it isn't just the hats. But there is something to be said with the amount of money they make on those hats.
I was really just looking for a source of something Gabe said and I vaguely recalled the quote you mentioned, just couldn't remember the exact phrasing.
OK, sorry Hotness. I gotta disagree and tell you a secret of why I find you all lame sometimes.
The picture is more then you are giving it. In fact, it is way more then you give it. The point of the picture was "This was movie quality, now you play in it." Also, what sold GTA was the sandbox of it. This picture represents a MASSIVE sandbox, and to top it all off, you are SPIDER MAN!
That is the picture. You are very much a boy though. Wanting explosions and stuff. Its O.K. lad.
i concur with RevivalMH and HouseofHobo on both their points. I'm not sure anti-piracy policies are ever going to go anywhere but annoy the users/gamers/whatever. Let's face it, gaming companies may invest some time and effort in their products, but it's not like they build each copy from scratch, as in automobiles, hamburgers and the like. Should one of these games sell.. idk... a million copies, but everyone has their game (via piracy), i still think it's a win on the long run.
Riot has the right idea. Having LoL as a free to play game makes piracy pointless. It is a good game, so I don't mind supporting them by buying skins.
well most of the games aren't coming to my county. they don't even ship them here so how am I supposed to play games if they stop piracy. piracy reaches where companies can't.
piracy will always happen. only way to stop it is putting out a good product, and making it easy to get(which includes a decent demo). but i do fear a world where all there is is crappy games
Well, to be fair, Gabe Newell from Valve has made similar statements about piracy, and I do think that he is in a position in which he can pull that off legitimately.
A good way to solve piracy is to support OPEN Act and keeping an eye on it so that it wouldn't ended up like those shity draconias SOPA/PIPA ( and ACTA that is comming right now! ). The good thing about OPEN is, first is "supported" by the Electronic Frontier Foundation because it don't ban anyone from the internet or messed up with IP, DNS or anything. It only stop the money flow the sites that make revenues with copyright material and it also is not a "Shoot first, ask later" like the others.
Origion may not have an actual app, but its fully supported on your phone. In order to play things like Trenches 2 etc. you have to download it and log into it. Its a complete origion interface in the game. So its basically an app.
Think about people like me who live in the third fucking world and cannot buy games like skyrim and stuff. If you stop pirating games, we'll never get to play them.
FUCK, that app would have been awsome this last sale, i missed BFE and SPAZ AND SANCTUM and DoD and solar 2 and orcs must die and dlc ans magicka and dlc and CaC and ...........
I pirate certain games cus I am not going to spend money on companies like EA with half assed bullshit drm titles and garbo customer service. Im not a sheep and im not nobodies bitch. If companies want my dollar they better put time into their product. How many games nowadays are flooded with bugs and rushed early. Im going to stick it to the man instead.
FIX YOUR BROKEN/HALF ASSED GAMES AND YOUR CRAP POLICIES EA,UBISOFT and CAPCOM
@HeavyFckinMetal so on the one hand they're shit games, and on the other hand you steal them so you can play the supposed shit?.... is this what all pathetic thieves say to themselves? grow up... you sound like an occupy wall street pissant
Will you please punch LauraSparkling in her nose for me! I just stumbled across her site the other day and you came to mind because you both do reviews. That's where that ends because all she does is show off her boobs to get reviews. You're still more beautiful than her and you only show shoulder up. Not to mention you have a great personality. Like your reviews.....and yes you are gorgeous.
Sorry Dodger, but the only thing that matters is that Spider-man is in it. Every kid will get their parents to buy it and they will make money.... That's the sad reality.
@caman225 honestly, i condone piracy. video games and movies are an exchange of culture and information, and people who are responsible about piracy do actually help contribute to companies in some way. for example. i can't play multiplayer because it's a pirated copy, but i really like the game, i end up buying it. same goes with music, if i download an alubm, and i really like the band, i usually buy a cd for my car and end up buying their later cds. even though i pirate i support as well
@gwelcome2 I agree that piracy can in many cases end up helping sales and whatnot, but it is still the right of the company, person or whatever who made it to not distribute and market it that way. So I don't think piracy is a bad thing, but I do not condone it because you are helping without consent to something you do not have the right to. The industry needs to adapt to how the exchange of information is changing.
@Nekreg i want to start out by saying i play and love minecraft. Minecraft isn't a big budget game nor does it take very much time to make the game the reason why it took so long is that there were only at most a half a dozen people working on it at one time and she's talking about games that take 15+ programmers, 30+ art guys etc. most games studio'shave 200+ people working 24-7 on games.
Either my eyes are playing tricks on me or I really saw two Dodgers at the same time :o Is it possible that you are currently in progress of creating a clone army, planning to take over the game news industry? ;)
About the Rovio statement.. I guess they said that because they got really big without much of an effort and are now feeling pretty sure on not having to ever work again and can just enjoy the rest of their life.
Maybe you could use your next video to mention the Humble Indie Bundle :)
piracy is no where near as bad as people make it out to be people that pirate stuff are few and far between...go around your college and ask people if they pirate games movies etc and 1 out of 10 will say yes if that maybe none of them will say yes.
Yeah, Dodge, I remember when you used to do that. ... ♪♫Boy, the way Glen Miller played. Songs that made the hit parade. Guys like us, we had it made. Those were the days. ♫♪
Anywho, loved the TGS Podcast again this week. It was long, yes, but very enjoyable.
Well I think that you got one thing wrong Dodger. I don't think that by people pirating games that companies are losing money. I think the vast majority of people that pirate have no real intention of buying the game in the first place. Meaning, no profit loss at all for the companies. Now I don't condone piracy at all but I doubt that these companies are bleeding from sales loss due to piracy as they would have you believe.
@RevivalMH that is blatant gamer entitlement. If you don't plan to buy it, guess what? you don't need to PLAY IT. you don't have the right to a game if you don't buy it. It is ridiculous to assume you "deserve" it for some reason. A game is a product, which you pay for. You don't walk into a McDonald's and demand french fries for free, because you wouldn't buy them otherwise. That is a poor excuse.
@caman225 What the shit? He wrote that he DOESN'T condone piracy. Something is seriously wrong with your eyes or your brain, because your comment is not at all an appropriate response. He essentially wrote: The companies are bullshitting because it's neat to blame piracy instead of looking at how distribution, marketing etc. is changing and instead of looking at themselves, so that whole thing is essentially a lie, BUT piracy is still something you shouldn't do, regardless of harm or benefit.
@caman225 I don't think you understood my message entirely. I agree that piracy is wrong and shouldn't be done. That's not what I'm arguing. I'm merely arguing that the people that do pirate aren't planning on purchasing the game anyway. So no loss in revenue for the companies. In no way did I try to justify the stealing of IP.
@RevivalMH Plus, it's very convenient for companies to blame sales figures on piracy instead of bad marketing, DRM that hurts legitimate consumers instead of pirates, releasing games that aren't polished yet and then patching it back and forth, day 1 DLC and the DLC mentality that seems to exist in general as well as increased competition in a market where people have less disposable income. The backwards industry must adapt to the Internet. Also pointing out that I do not condone piracy either.
@RevivalMH I love dodger and all, but honestly I agree. Certainly there are some people who would have bought a game, but discovered piracy and thus don't, but many either don't have the money anyway, or just wouldn't pay for a game anyway.
@RevivalMH that "vast majority"-part is a estimation on your part and might not reflect true facts. I don´t say it IS wrong, but neither will i agree. sure, it makes sense that people don´t buy games they don´t want to play. pirating may be the way to go. but then, why actually going through the trouble and download time for a game, you don´t want to play? so in the end you DO want to play, therefore made companies losing money.
@GruntSquad92 The question is not whether or not you want to play a game. It's are you willing to spend X amount of dollars to play said game. My point is that a lot of the time when people pirate it's because they don't feel like paying $60 for a game they only sort of want to play. So when presented with the option of pirating it's a no brainer. However, given only the options of pay $60 or don't play at all they would instead choose the don't play at all option. Meaning, again, no loss.
@RevivalMH of course you can follow up with more arguments for either side, pro and contra. we only know that there IS a loss of money. we don´t anything about how many gamers are actually playing games, they don´t want to play, and therefore we don´t know how big the loss REALLY is.

It is a good game, so I don't mind supporting them by buying skins.

piracy will always happen. only way to stop it is putting out a good product, and making it easy to get(which includes a decent demo). but i do fear a world where all there is is crappy games

If companies want my dollar they better put time into their product. How many games nowadays are flooded with bugs and rushed early. Im going to stick it to the man instead.

@caman225 honestly, i condone piracy. video games and movies are an exchange of culture and information, and people who are responsible about piracy do actually help contribute to companies in some way. for example. i can't play multiplayer because it's a pirated copy, but i really like the game, i end up buying it. same goes with music, if i download an alubm, and i really like the band, i usually buy a cd for my car and end up buying their later cds. even though i pirate i support as well
gwelcome2 1 month ago
@gwelcome2 I agree that piracy can in many cases end up helping sales and whatnot, but it is still the right of the company, person or whatever who made it to not distribute and market it that way. So I don't think piracy is a bad thing, but I do not condone it because you are helping without consent to something you do not have the right to. The industry needs to adapt to how the exchange of information is changing.

Nekreg 1 month ago
@Nekreg i want to start out by saying i play and love minecraft. Minecraft isn't a big budget game nor does it take very much time to make the game the reason why it took so long is that there were only at most a half a dozen people working on it at one time and she's talking about games that take 15+ programmers, 30+ art guys etc. most games studio'shave 200+ people working 24-7 on games.

RevivalMH 1 month ago 31
@RevivalMH that is blatant gamer entitlement. If you don't plan to buy it, guess what? you don't need to PLAY IT. you don't have the right to a game if you don't buy it. It is ridiculous to assume you "deserve" it for some reason. A game is a product, which you pay for. You don't walk into a McDonald's and demand french fries for free, because you wouldn't buy them otherwise. That is a poor excuse.
caman225 1 month ago in playlist Uploaded videos
@caman225 What the shit? He wrote that he DOESN'T condone piracy. Something is seriously wrong with your eyes or your brain, because your comment is not at all an appropriate response. He essentially wrote: The companies are bullshitting because it's neat to blame piracy instead of looking at how distribution, marketing etc. is changing and instead of looking at themselves, so that whole thing is essentially a lie, BUT piracy is still something you shouldn't do, regardless of harm or benefit.
Moonbolt 1 month ago
@caman225 I don't think you understood my message entirely. I agree that piracy is wrong and shouldn't be done. That's not what I'm arguing. I'm merely arguing that the people that do pirate aren't planning on purchasing the game anyway. So no loss in revenue for the companies. In no way did I try to justify the stealing of IP.
RevivalMH 1 month ago
@RevivalMH Plus, it's very convenient for companies to blame sales figures on piracy instead of bad marketing, DRM that hurts legitimate consumers instead of pirates, releasing games that aren't polished yet and then patching it back and forth, day 1 DLC and the DLC mentality that seems to exist in general as well as increased competition in a market where people have less disposable income. The backwards industry must adapt to the Internet. Also pointing out that I do not condone piracy either.
Moonbolt 1 month ago
@RevivalMH I love dodger and all, but honestly I agree. Certainly there are some people who would have bought a game, but discovered piracy and thus don't, but many either don't have the money anyway, or just wouldn't pay for a game anyway.
MorpheousXO 1 month ago
@RevivalMH that "vast majority"-part is a estimation on your part and might not reflect true facts. I don´t say it IS wrong, but neither will i agree. sure, it makes sense that people don´t buy games they don´t want to play. pirating may be the way to go. but then, why actually going through the trouble and download time for a game, you don´t want to play? so in the end you DO want to play, therefore made companies losing money.
GruntSquad92 1 month ago
@GruntSquad92 The question is not whether or not you want to play a game. It's are you willing to spend X amount of dollars to play said game. My point is that a lot of the time when people pirate it's because they don't feel like paying $60 for a game they only sort of want to play. So when presented with the option of pirating it's a no brainer. However, given only the options of pay $60 or don't play at all they would instead choose the don't play at all option. Meaning, again, no loss.
RevivalMH 1 month ago
@RevivalMH of course you can follow up with more arguments for either side, pro and contra. we only know that there IS a loss of money. we don´t anything about how many gamers are actually playing games, they don´t want to play, and therefore we don´t know how big the loss REALLY is.
