I spent so much time in high school trying to find a way to seem cool that wasn't everybody else's way of being cool. It wasn't until years later that I realized what I had been aiming for then, was Tom Waits.

This version is kickass! This tune & it's album Heart Attack & Vine have become some of my favorite Tom Waits music to listen to. It's puzzling why so many people who choose to review this always say it's transitional Waits & so forth. I'd say it's essential Waits!

Don Lane actually seems like a fan, i think theres a cool chemistry between him and tom, and his show was pretty good back in the day, two great talents

Tom was doing Don Lane's show when he refused to go on American talk shows.

He would travel across the ocean to do this show when he would not appear on television in his own home.

I think that this fact alone contradicts your impression of Don Lane.

Also, the shy, quiet guys are always the ones who turn out to be either the most talented or friendliest people you've ever met & I have met my fair share of guys like Tom. Ended up marrying my best friend, who also happens to have a gravelly voice & the same friendly demeanor as Mr. Waits and this was before I was even into Tom's music. Ha ha. What are the odds? Meant to be, I think yes.

I worked for Don and was back stage that night. Tom Waits had enormous respect for him, because Don recognised and celebrated Tom being Tom. That's why everyone 'cool' or 'trad' or anything in between was always happy to do the show. Don knew his job was to let his guests star, not him. Tom appeared on The Lane Show several times and was always happy to visit as were several other stars who normally didn't do TV. They felt safe with Don.

i thought the interview and performance were awesome... it has to be hard for a host to interview someone with toms eccentricities... but i thought it was obvious he genuinely enjoys tom, and he got nice plugs in for tom and wasn't rude at all... plus the smile on his face after tom performed was similar to my own after watching a waits performance i enjoy... the mans amazing
