The string could have something to do with this ideal in Japanese (I think..) that two people who love each other are tied together by this red "life" string. and it tangles around them and all the things they're involved in as their lives evolve together. (which the tangling sounds horrible.. its mean to represent how hard it is for them to leave each other, if they decide to.. because of their lives together)
