Regarding the spread of knowledge, actually, the modern world is the product of the following cultures, in order of importance;
1) Ancient Greece, preserved by the Romans, and then further preserved by the Byzantines, who were overwhelmingly Greek ethnically speaking, not Italian.
2) China (yes, China); Marco Polo brought back to his homeland of Italy more than just silk, he brought back books. How the fuck does anyone think the Renaissance started?
3) India and Islam together; the Arabs took stuff to Spain from India.
consequently, modern times are the product of Greece, China, India, AND, the Arabs, together, most of the knowledge put to creative use primarily in Italy, at least at first.
