Ive been a Huge Journey fan since 1975 before perry. and still am, and i am for perry, he is not exactly replacable. however, Musicians know, its probably fact if the band wanted perry to sing, he most likley couldnt. they would have to tune down for sure if he did. bottom line, the wave with steve has hit the beach long ago. Arnel is Good, and gives the band life, to go out and earn money! i will say if perry could sing, they could not play ampitheaters, they would fill stadiums world wide

The only members who writes songs is Jonathon and Neal...Jonathon knows that he writes a better songs with Steve. OH WOW!. Firstly...my opinion only. This is a group of guys playing music that a band, Journey, used to play. I DON'T think that Arnel would have made "it" , in his lil village w/out YouTube. So sad, tries so hard to imitate Steve Perry's voice, and he WEARS STEVE AUGERI'S pants? my gosh. Lastly...Neal Schon has talent and an ego to match, ugh. Arnel is a nice enough guy. Arnel has a very powerful voice and a good range, but he oversings... everything is belted. He's a good replacement, but I liked Augeri better. Just my opinion

@spiky05 Neil Schon chose Pineda not because of his own merits as a singer but because he did a decent Steve Perry impersonation. The problem is that Pineda doesn't have Perry's range and he obviously struggles to hit most of the higher or more powerful notes. Already he has to sit out a couple of songs each concert so he can rest his voice. Schon and the band aren't doing him any favors forcing him to sing like Perry. He's going to ruin what is otherwise a decent singing voice.
Neal Schon chose Pineda because he heard that Pineda could do more than just only a Steve Perry voicestyle,he can cover more ground than any singer Journey had including the great SP.
Pineda sang on his first tour(2008) with Journey everything on key(except maybe one or two shows when he was under the weather).
The 2009 tour the band made the decision to accommodate the songs to Pineda`s voice.
All you anti Pineda boys and girls are for the most part Steve Perry fans,those fans should realize that if Perry came back the Journey back catalogue and the new songs (Pineda,Augeri) would be accommodated also to present vocal capacities of Steve Perry.
And believe me just one key wouldn,t be enough.... but if that would happen,we wouldn`t hear any of you purists complain..or would we ?

Whenever he tries to match Perry's range you can hear the strain in his voice, and more often than not he's flat. As for why Schon chose Pineda, he is on record saying that it's because he wanted someone who sounded like Steve Perry and could sing the songs the way fans remembered them.
@spiky05 Actually, "Revelation" is a great album because it's suited to Pineda's range and straight-ahead singing style. The biggest different between Pineda and Perry is that the latter is capable of delivering a more nuanced performance, and that's fine as long as material written for Pineda keeps that in mind, which "Revelation" does. It's just when Pineda tries his hand at singing Perry's material that things fall apart.
It is very difficult for any singer to come close to Perry`s originals the only two singers who could really convince me were Pineda and Jeremey Hunsicker..I totally understand why Journey went for Pineda...you can hear it on the new songs on Revelation.
My message to people who are still talking in the present time about Perry`s vocal abillities should listen to YT vids of the FTLOSM tour..and that tour was 16 years ago.
Lot of people form their opinion on only YT vids..they actually never heard Pineda sing live.
Pineda/Journey vids are plenty on YT,by now they superceed Journey/Perry vids in numbers....lots of people are nitpicking the hell out of Pineda for whatever reason which I find very disturbing because when Augeri was the singer all those critics where not so prominent in numbers to bash Augeri !
@spiky05 I've seen them, and even though the sound quality is sub par I think Perry sounds as good as ever. His voice has deepened, which happens to pretty much every male vocalist, but he still has a wide range and is capable of a nuanced delivery. And according to some recent comments by Randy Jackson, Perry has kept his voice in shape even though he hasn't performed publicly since parting ways with Journey. I'd love it he made a come back with a solo album, or even returned to Journey.
Being a Journeyfan I always keep my admiration for Steve Perry the singer but it never has blinded me to understand that his voice took a serious blow after and during the Raised On Radio Tour,after that tour he was toasted(his own words).
Sure his voice kept the soulfulness..his musicality wasn`t altered but his voice was.
So fast forwarded to 2010...for almost 14 years we didn`t hear a solo live performance from him and yet still a lot of people like you still believe..
He`s no liar he is just kind to Perry..hey Perry will never lose his soulfulness and musicality..he just can`t sing those incredible insane vocals he did back in the eighties..it`s called aging..and we all will have to deal with it..someday !

Revelations from what I hear has sold quite well and this has happened without mainstream radio playing Journey's new and original songs. Pineda will ride this for a few years more and will exit a rich man.
Believe it or not, I agree with you about Pineda. I'm simply commenting on skill level, not on how much either singer is accepted. I haven't bought a Journey CD (with ANY of the singers) in 5+ years. I don't get into money issues, since I don't get any of the cash involved. It's a simple matter of taste, like coffee. Some people are double-caff-mocha-latte-with-a-shot-of-mint, and I put nothing into my coffee but my upper lip. The real problem is the "I'm right, so you're wrong" world, you know?
to NoSteveNo Journey .... Arnel executes this song maybe 7/10 or 7.5/10. His vocals are credible. Not great, but not bad. But overall he's quite good. Journey doesn't hire club-quality singers. R u a vocals instructor? (I'm not, just a fan). So some advice : (1) sit closer to your speakers; (2) crank 'em up. (3) remove that cock from your left ear; (4) remove cock from right ear also (impedes hearing). Perhaps then AP's range might sound slightly better.
AP is good with the band, and he's younger and can still hit the high notes that Steve had to key down a bit in the later years. As long as they do a few songs with SP at their eventual induction in the Rock HOF, I'm good. Some bands evolve...that's just how it goes.

OH WOW!. Firstly...my opinion only. This is a group of guys playing music that a band, Journey, used to play. I DON'T think that Arnel would have made "it" , in his lil village w/out YouTube. So sad, tries so hard to imitate Steve Perry's voice, and he WEARS STEVE AUGERI'S pants? my gosh. Lastly...Neal Schon has talent and an ego to match, ugh. Arnel is a nice enough guy. Jon...Jon is an amazing talent, the only one who still makes Journey fans proud. If Jon went solo I'd have renewed interest.

Truth told, I've said it before (elsewhere), and I'll say it again here; I wish Pineda would fulfill his contract with Journey and build a better band where he can develop and make his own way.
The guy is a good singer, he's just not Steve Perry, and Schon is trying to make him be. It's unfair, even though Pineda is getting rich. When these geezers die off, no one will take him seriously if he doesn't become more proactive toward his (inevitable) solo career.

@spiky05 Neil Schon chose Pineda not because of his own merits as a singer but because he did a decent Steve Perry impersonation. The problem is that Pineda doesn't have Perry's range and he obviously struggles to hit most of the higher or more powerful notes. Already he has to sit out a couple of songs each concert so he can rest his voice. Schon and the band aren't doing him any favors forcing him to sing like Perry. He's going to ruin what is otherwise a decent singing voice.

Neal Schon chose Pineda because he heard that Pineda could do more than just only a Steve Perry voicestyle,he can cover more ground than any singer Journey had including the great SP.
Pineda sang on his first tour(2008) with Journey everything on key(except maybe one or two shows when he was under the weather).
The 2009 tour the band made the decision to accommodate the songs to Pineda`s voice.

Whenever he tries to match Perry's range you can hear the strain in his voice, and more often than not he's flat. As for why Schon chose Pineda, he is on record saying that it's because he wanted someone who sounded like Steve Perry and could sing the songs the way fans remembered them.

@spiky05 Actually, "Revelation" is a great album because it's suited to Pineda's range and straight-ahead singing style. The biggest different between Pineda and Perry is that the latter is capable of delivering a more nuanced performance, and that's fine as long as material written for Pineda keeps that in mind, which "Revelation" does. It's just when Pineda tries his hand at singing Perry's material that things fall apart.

@spiky05 I've seen them, and even though the sound quality is sub par I think Perry sounds as good as ever. His voice has deepened, which happens to pretty much every male vocalist, but he still has a wide range and is capable of a nuanced delivery. And according to some recent comments by Randy Jackson, Perry has kept his voice in shape even though he hasn't performed publicly since parting ways with Journey. I'd love it he made a come back with a solo album, or even returned to Journey.

Why can't you all just be glad that they are still playing...still recording...and still touring...Castronovo could get into any band he wanted..(as a singer as well as a drummer !)..Cain could spend the rest of his days "Producing" and never have to set foot out of his house !.Schon- goes without saying !..Valory has always had other musical outlets..and Pineda could go solo with the platform that has been given to him!

Schon is playing drop-D tuning, never did that with Perry, Soto, Augeri, or any other band prior to Journey. You can't play the high notes in the solo in drop-D. Listen to how weak the solo is.
Pineda just yells high notes.

Profanity is the language of the uneducated. If commercial success is the lynch pin of greatness, then you must be a HUGE Barry Manilow fan. Or maybe Tiny Tim. They're doing great in places where Journey never toured before/hasn't toured in decades. Played Boston yet? No. I've accepted that Perry won't be back, but Schon & co. have ZERO to do with that; Perry himself has said it'll never happen, and he's the one I respect. People should die for having an opinion? @EyeAgree you know what. I agree. Steve Perry's legendary status will never be lived down that is the only reason american radio will not play new Journey music and they have not since Perry left.
No worries for Arnel. The world as a whole is accepting him and buying his albums and he is making way more money than he ever imagined he would make. Making millions is the true mark of success. Ask any multimillionaire performer.

Success is in fan loyalty. Loyalty is not in the moment, so Arnel doesn't even qualify for this.
When the band takes on a totally different sound, and he can carry them through that, THEN he will qualify for loyalty.
Perry inherited the job from Gregg Rolie/Robert Fleischman, don't forget. They were a garage band before that, and they're devolving to it again.

Pineda sings just fine for the original material he sings and most people don't have a problem with his singing of songs Perry sang. In the end what matters is what the people who buy albums think.
Revelations from what I hear has sold quite well and this has happened without mainstream radio playing Journey's new and original songs. Pineda will ride this for a few years more and will exit a rich man.

Believe it or not, I agree with you about Pineda. I'm simply commenting on skill level, not on how much either singer is accepted. I haven't bought a Journey CD (with ANY of the singers) in 5+ years. I don't get into money issues, since I don't get any of the cash involved. It's a simple matter of taste, like coffee. Some people are double-caff-mocha-latte-with-a-shot-of-mint, and I put nothing into my coffee but my upper lip. The real problem is the "I'm right, so you're wrong" world, you know?

to NoSteveNo Journey .... Arnel executes this song maybe 7/10 or 7.5/10. His vocals are credible. Not great, but not bad. But overall he's quite good. Journey doesn't hire club-quality singers. R u a vocals instructor? (I'm not, just a fan). So some advice : (1) sit closer to your speakers; (2) crank 'em up. (3) remove that cock from your left ear; (4) remove cock from right ear also (impedes hearing). Perhaps then AP's range might sound slightly better.

AP is good with the band, and he's younger and can still hit the high notes that Steve had to key down a bit in the later years. As long as they do a few songs with SP at their eventual induction in the Rock HOF, I'm good. Some bands evolve...that's just how it goes.

Journey is lucky to have him. They are a great band, but they were done when Steve quit. To get a singer that talented with a rags to riches story to boot launched them. Good luck to them all!!
