It's hilarious to me that TheNewYorkTimes allows these little quips about "lingering racism" to be published; it would be like a newspaper making the claim that German Jews were the masterminds behind Nazi Germany.

The ANC controls South Africa with a 100% BLACK government. Their policies reflect BLACK interests. TheNewYorkTimes is using any excuse they can find to explain how blacks could be given a 1st world country and revert it to a 3rd world in less than two decades.

public transport has always been a problem in jo burg . I'd love to see the day when we can have effective public transport that is safe , reliable and won't be destroyed by idiots who cannot fathom why it's a bad idea to destroy public transport.part of the reason why it hasnt improved isbecause investors are afraid of their projects being destroyed .I have always been well treated in foriegncountrie s . I am a white South African. It's sorry to see how things are always reported from only one angle. In the last 16 years SA has made it its mission to get every child into school, no matter the race. So I believe everyone has equal opportunity in this country, if you are willing to work. I would like to see a video featuring the poor white suburbs in SA. It is not only black people that is suffering. Apartheid is over. We can not fix the past, but we can focus on thebright future.

I'm actually an american living in Alaska, and I read a book called "spud" and "spud:madness continues" I love it! though I was VERY shocked at how racist caucasian south africans are at 1990! I was very happy Spud is a freedom fighter and I hope, someday your country will be absolutely like USA with equal rights for everyone

I agree. Things were ugly back then, but that was a long time ago. I wish someone will write a book on how things are going now. Sure there are still people suffering, but it is not only black people. Remember that USA had its bad patch years ago. SA is a free country will equal rights to all - according to our goverment. You still get racial incidents, but it is from all sides. Blacks on whites, whites on blacks... I believe you get them everywhere in the world. SA just like telling about it.

I've read a fair amount about BEE - Black Economic Empowerment. Very strict racial employment & educational quotas. I'd guess it does make life more difficult for Whites because they must be more qualified in order to get a decent job. But maybe it reverse some of the negative effects of apartheid. It's pretty clear that South Africa is trying, both Whites and Blacks. Whites suck it up in an attempt to make amends & I'm sure they face a lot of anger & resentment.

@nnaenae - You'd be treated just fine! 11 million tourists visit Sth Africa each year 98% leave with fantastic memories. There's a growing number of Americans residing in Sth Africa (black&white). I for one has met many US citizens in SA either travelling or living permanently. It's not all about Joburg, Sth Africa's best places are it's coastal regions in my opinion.
