The technical nature of modern surf is what it is because guys like Fletcher, Potter & others pioneered the moves back in the eighties. SLater was influenced by what had gone down and picked up the torch;everyone followed.

Another thing to consider is board design. As more money has come into the sport, the brain trust has increased. Even a subtle change can increase performance radically. We have much to look forward to in surfing.

Im not disagreeing with you, Fletcher was doing some crazy tricks before anybody was even dreaming of doing it as good as he was ( And still is ) But not all surfing tricks were based off what they were doing, there has been some crazy innovators that have just revolutionized surfing, Take Julian Wilson for example, he is pretty young AND hes pulling off moves like the Sushii roll?!?! Hes not even at his peak and he has already changed surfing forever.

The first one was the best but it lead to nowhere. The 2nd one was the best peeling wave, you never see that around here. The 3rd guy is living on a prayer. The 4th dude, bored and just killing those guys out there ie.SoCal-avoid at all costs. Longbottom- never seen a more perfect landing on any move, its like the wave cradled him.

Hobgood - fess up, you went for the snap off the top and buried the board by mistake, but powered through. Not planned, but wow.

Pacey- I rode backwards by mistake off a missed move once, Lasted about 7 seconds before board shot up and crunched my nuts hard. Mad props for doing it on purpose AND stalling for the tube.
