  • 1:36 "what are you doing with my song paul? btw it's cool...."

  • He looks kind of like Glenn Gould's doppelgänger when when he plays lol

  • Look at his face at 0:34

  • "Improve my technique" IT'S THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?!

  • @darc1992 Paul Gilbert simply closes his eyes & meditates for 60 secs and his technique "improves" automatically lol

  • 0:14

  • paul sweeped..... whats the world coming to

  • gilbert always has a crappy sound, pity cause he plays so damn well, he should play this on a gretsch clean will a warm sound and some reverb - 'd be awesome!

  • @guitar789 i think it sounds just find rofl?

  • lol bach was fat

  • what would Bach think if he were to see Paul Gilbert play one of his songs on an electric guitar?

  • I simply love paul. He plays like the Devil, but he is a really nice and funny guy! Have u guys seen his website? Its really funny... I mean... what else can you ask for?

  • I hate it when guitarists play Bach. Bach is great because of his counterpoint, and they only play one voice.

  • Just awesome...Awesome to the max

  • I love Bach, he wrote so much beautiful music which goes beyond every thing you can imagine. Did you ever listen profoundly to the harmony of this Prelude? Unfortunately you play this piece rather like a mechanical etude and that's sad because in this way you do not have the ability to enter into the true richness of this musics mind. Sorry, no offense but that's the way I think.

  • @syddy13

You go transcribe your own performances of bach into a guitar and do better.

I know that's unfair, but it's really snobby to nitpick at something that is only half of the performance with so much complaint.

You should be happy people still have interest in Bach.

  • @syddy13 You can't expect him to play this prelude as richly as Richter does, they're playing on two different instruments. I think Paul's interpretation is nice, you could hear the voices, and a lot of guitarists forget that in Bach. Maybe this sounds mechanical since his picking is steady and consistent.

  • I could sleep the the sound of the picking.

  • reminds me of doug from weeds

  • pauls great and all but this is just annoying

  • incredible.

  • Paul seems to be a really nice guy.

  • I'm conflicted. On one sid.. wait i just ended viewing it. He screwed the ending :sigh:

  • god

  • Yea I Love That Guy !

  • 4 person absolutely deaf or Justin Bieber fan.

  • paul gilbert saw in san diego with MR. BIG every time you play there is something new i like about your musical style specially your clasical on the guitar, at first i thought the only instrumental albums to buy were only SATCH,VAI but there is a whole new world of instrumental great players of all styles which is really really kool if you like music. THANK YOU P.S. "I THINK YOUR GIVING "Yngwie J. Malsteem a run for his $ dude.

  • I love paul and I love classical music so this vid is awsome for me

  • I'm glad I found this! The tab for this was in a U.K guitar mag a few years ago, and unfortunately I've lost it and have forgotten a big chunk in the middle after not playing it for some months. This might help jog the memory, cheers!

Great piece to learn imo, technically my playing imroved massively after trying to get this down. Wish I could still remember it though...

  • @Guitar777Geek I've found it btw, for anyone interested. The guitar techniques article is on a site called 'musicradar (dot) com', Easily found by putting 'Paul Gilbert prelude in D major' into your search engine. Doh!

    :)

  • Paul always set his "Presence" settings on very high level so the pick hit come out very loud with great attack. He explain in his 1st REH video lesson, talking about the ADA preamp setup. If you want great attack and picking hits.... raise up your "Presence" , but be carefully because it's a very critical setup : will be catched everything, also noise and dead notes... so you have to apply a great muting work , fingering and picking !

  • I jammed with him. The most awesome day in my whole live!

  • I think he gets that sound by angling the pick when he plays, it ives that brushy, nice pick attack .

  • very nice would have been even sweeter if he did the left-hand part aswell

  • Adam Fulara plays both at the same time on a double neck! lol

  • yeah laney soundcit \m/

  • What suite is this the prelude to? Anyone know?

  • @TheILMadeKnight its the prelude to Bachs fifth fugue from the well tempered clavier book 1

  • I'm trying to learn this. It's not hard to play but it's hard to memorize

  • He can't improve. He arrived at the maximum clarity and speed already, how or who the FUCK could "improve" that, I mean, seriously?!

  • @Blader999 By learning different style of guitar. eg. Flamenco

  • paul you are a god among mere mortals

  • WTF the guitar right in the bottom Is that the fireman???

but SS1 is from 2005:O He had "the precious" all this time without telling :P

  • @brando18guitarplyr its probably the iceman. which the fireman is a mirror image. unless he had an early proto type

  • @flyinginabluedre

Naw, probably early proto type, you wouldn't be able to see the horn on the "top side" unless that was a lefty iceman which I doubt.

  • don't like distortion, it f*cks up BACH

  • this guy must have a great memory

  • In the right hand lower corner you can see an Ibanez Fireman standing there. So he had it even back then. I wonder why he held of playing it live until around the get out of my yard days.

  • i loved hearing this on piano.. harpsichord.. and now, guitar

  • Did Bach write sweeps like that for the piano?

  • @13tynman

Actually, what is arranged as a sweep for guitar, isn't necessarily what is considered a sweep on piano. A good example of sweeps on a piano would be some pieces by Franz Liszt.

  • @ChronicMetamorphosis

i appreciate your information but I was making a joke

  • @13tynman :shrugs:

  • @SLee1337 11:00pm I mean :P

  • @SLee1337 haha, if they serve food you're allowed in as long as you leave before 11:00am

  • Amazing player, I've always been a huge fan of Paul's music and technique.

  • @TheInvalidChronicles uh no...not at all...

  • @TheInvalidChronicles do you know what alternate picking is dude?

  • @guitars357 Yeah I do it all the time

  • @TheInvalidChronicles then you should be able to clearly see if he is doing it or not :s could you explain to me what it is. I'm sorry if I'm coming off as an asshole but i really don't think you know what it is

  • @guitars357 Well if I didn't know what it was then there would be no way I could cover technical difficulties would there

  • @TheInvalidChronicles soooo what is it?

  • @TheInvalidChronicles I think i'll just go on assuming that you don't know what it is

    -_-

  • @guitars357 Hmmm I think I do because Paul taught me it on his lessons 1 on 1 did jamming with him and lessons

  • @TheInvalidChronicles Oh my god -_- you can't really teach alternate picking dude, it's just something you do...anyways, could you please answer my question, i've asked twice now and you still didn't answer. NOW, what is alternate picking. I'm starting to doubt that you even know how to play guitar.

  • @TheInvalidChronicles And I really doubt that you took any lessons from paul, if you did and he for some reason taught you alternate picking, wouldn't there be no need to ask if he uses it, because he obviously would n00b

  • @guitars357 Dude really noob? What are u some kind of noob who plays video games? And yes I got tickets from him on Christmas and I was just saying that for empathy I know what alternate picking is dumb ass

  • @TheInvalidChronicles so what is it? plain and simple, what is alternate picking

  • @guitars357 Btw dumb ass alternate picking, is continueoulsy picking up strokes and down strokes

  • @TheInvalidChronicles finally! there ya go, was that so hard?

  • @TheInvalidChronicles wow, you could of like googled it the first time I asked and avoided this embarassment

  • @guitars357 Dude just stop I don't think Paul would want amateurs like u being dicks ti people.. Have a nice day

  • @TheInvalidChronicles I haven't really been a dick, you jst kept avoiding my question and insulting ME. Not the other way around

  • @guitars357 and btw, i'm not an amateur, i've been playing bars and restaurants since i was 11 years old -_-

  • Is that a Fireman prototype I see in the bottom right corner? I didn't know he had them that early.

  • tabs..?

  • @l1u1k1e2 Learn by ear like Gilbert did! It's not that hard if you know basic music theory on scales.

  • @YummyBananaFish exactly

back then they didnt have guitar pro or youtube, they bought books and learned by ear.

  • @eleph4nt Yup. It also just helps you form your own style. Plus tabs are boring as hell.

  • @l1u1k1e2 I've got a transcription of it, from guitar techniques magazine, if you want it, pm me.

  • "I Learned em By Ear" Yeah...And I am the god of the universe he would say also :S

  • guy makes his alternate picking seem completely effortless.

  • I love how Paul jokes by telling us he could possibly improve his technique. He's such a funny bloke.

  • @andydude747 Well he rerecorded it 2 years later at nearly twice the tempo so ...he was serious

  • Dear paul I'm not tryin to be a jerk or anything but it sure helps when you say the full tittle of the bach piece , in this case it's.

Prelude and Fugue No. 5 in D major, BWV 850, from Bach's Well-tempered Clavier

I'll be as good as you paul right after the brain surgery lol

  • lol "i didn't like the way i performed it so i didn't put it on the record" he's great. but he did have a point though, he did sorta slow down towards the end.

  • Well thats the facts of life , if paul gilbert does it , you better do it ! lol

There are few exceptions to that rule.

I've no idea why paul has not produced a cd of himself playing the well tempered clavier books 1 and 2 , i'm not suggesting that he do that , but it does leave questions in the mind.

  • If you were expecting to have the money to buy the incorrect sheet music every time you want to play something you're retarded.

Start learning to play by ear or just forget you ever heard music in your entire life.

  • Paul is a great player ,that picking....wow! I saw him live in Italy and his sound is different playing louder...I don't love his sound in this vids but I think it has a violinistic connotation, and Paul loves classical music...(sorry for my english)

    Anyway:

Every stupid and offensive comment will be removed.

    Thanks for watching!

  • @ceroz79 His not going (full on death!) distortion. This means when he finally engage his distortion pedal he will kick so much ass! And i think his left hand is much more impressive than his picking technique.

  • @Pactoren I just simply love him...

  • @Pactoren I don't agree. I think his picking technique is way more impressive!

  • @prantare you are awesome! rock on!

  • @ceroz79 thank you :D

  • @Pactoren But his picking is flawless....

Do you not see the use of economic picking...

Surely you know that the right hand is just as important as the left...

  • @Pactoren you cant sweep pick

  • @Pactoren They're both impressive. Regardless of speed, Paul's right hand is unshakable.

  • @Pactoren

His right hand is the impressive part! Rock solid alternate picking technique

  • hahahahah i like how he showed a pic of that bach dude while playin :P pretty sick lick i must say

  • 2:00 sounds like malmsteen

  • i haven't seen this whole dvd, so i always expect him to open with "this is a racer x song, its called SCARIFIED!"

  • kinda sounds like a harpsichord

  • 2:00

YNGWIE LICK!!!!!!!!!! love when paul play yngwie stuff ;D

( no, i know yngwie didnt discovered the actual lick, some of classic musisians did back in stone age or somthin, but i just call it yngwie lick, cuz first time i heard those dimminished sweeps, was from yngwie)

    kkthxbye

  • your welcome

  • does anyone know where i can find tabs for this??

  • Love his playing, but the tone could use some work.

  • @hendrixkixas Yeah I'm glad he switched to Marshalls. The tone is much thicker and more comfortable than his old one

  • his tone always sucks in instructional vids...

  • haha thats totally true, I only really know him from vids and his tone must have always kept me from actually exploring his actual work, as I've watched his videos here and there for years but haven't actually gotten around to listening to any of his real music.

  • man so beautiful! where can u get his dvds?

  • Beautiful....This guy is King...Amazing guitar player.

  • I love how the pick-ups catch his picking. Sounds like a metronome.

  • @goodoldeal a big part to that sound ur hearing is because paul uses a heavy angle on his picking hand so that swap swap kinda sound u hear is because of that try it out if u play guitar ...paul describes the whole heavy angle thing as a way to give him a more percussive cello esque effect

  • @Dreamscapevirus It helps you play slightly faster as well, and gives a "heavy" sound for chunky rhythms as opposed to the pick directly perpendicular to the string

  • @goodoldeal Paul practically IS a metronome! 8-O

  • @SuperGuitarNerd Isn't he, though!? I just watched it again. I love it.

  • @goodoldeal it's the way he uses his pick, he uses it on a pretty extreme angle to intentionally achieve that sound

  • @goodoldeal yeah his attack is awesome.

  • man i love paul gilbert. but his tone......it kinda sounds like crap. anyone else think it sounds thin?

  • no! :)

  • he does that sound he can tell if he can make a mistake plus its the best way to get distortion with no feed back so he turns down the gain to give it more of a dull yet high pitched sound that way if you mess up you will hear it better

  • Awesome- like a harpsichord on lsd

  • I love the way paul ends his playing.

  • he learns them by ear......I don´t want to believe it

  • it's possible....i mean paul did it!

  • thats why its impossible lol

  • for some reason,i have to agree and disagree with you! XD

  • Its not difficult they are mostly 16th notes with no additional guitar techniques, no harmonies or chords. just takes time and patience.

  • i saw a chords and some sweep picking, and some hella clean alternate picking.

  • Going to disagree with you there.

1:24 hammer ons and pull offs.

    1:59 Sweep Picking.

  • @Jeahbuddy

fucking nuts right? and of course he plays it like as clean as you possibly can lol

  • @Jeahbuddy He learns Bach by ear... Even harder to believe

  • wow, paul gilbert still makes classical sound awesome , praise be 2 paul lol
