You can easily correct aspect ratio on the Mac if you have Final Cut or iMovie. (Final Cut has its own aspect ratio adjustments which make this easy.) You can also fix it in either MPEG Streamclip or AVIDemux after editing.
I'm an Aspect Ratio Diva and work almost exclusively on the Mac, and I have no trouble with aspect ratio. Most aspect ratio errors I see are done with Windows-based editors.
You can correct the aspect ratio in Virtual Dub on windows: -
1) From the video>filter menu apply a resize filter
2) Check the Expand Frame and letterbox image
3) Your new width & height should be in 16:9 dimensions
4) Your Frame width & height should be in 4:3 dimensions
When you render this out (with save AVI) your 16:9 will be in a 4:3 size with a black border top and bottom.

Well, dude, your tutorial would've helpfull if you haven't considered that everybody's gotta use Windows! Specially on video production!
Most of serious video people use Mac - not Windows !
