• It really amazes me to see how many people are freaked out about this. You can get the tank adapter just about anywhere yet you don't hear about disasters anywhere. It's just a sentence on a bottle that means take care and if you do screw up don't sue us. This reminds me of the Dark Ages when people were freaked out about magic and stuff!!

  • have a smoke while you wait...

  • i really dont see ANY difference to refilling my cordless soldering iron with butane.

it leaks as i fill too.great idea,i can get all the bottles i want.

  • I would think that a much safer option would be a large tank adapter for whatever application you are refilling the tanks for. This is incredibly illegal although I'm sure lots of people do it already. Don't get caught selling that stuff for sure. Insurance gets voided if you mess up too. Just saying. I would be pretty scared of anything happening because of any leaks. You can also get refillable exchangeable tanks @ $20 for 20 lbs. That is a buck a pound. And 140% legal too.

  • Aww, c'mon Julian! All I want is a little propane, propane...propane, propane..propane, propane, it's time to start the flame, propane, propane!

  • The reason why the valve in his video is blue-green could DEFINITELY break laws. Have you been using this adapter with anhydrous ammonia?

  • refilling them brakes no laws. it would illegal to sell them being they are not marked as refilled tanks thats the law your thinking of. its more a labeling law then anything. however some states may have different laws on the transport of refilled tanks.

  • and a condom :0 pro pain rape lmao

hey you wouldent happen to be able to sell one of the adapters would ya

  • gloves wouldn't be a bad idea at all...frostbite hurts like a bitch...

  • so if i have safety glasses and a condom i can try it at home?

  • U can buy 2 of these propane bottles @ Walmart for $5.30 a pair

  • Do I need a dog to do this? What type of dog should I buy?

Actually, this is a great video! I wondered about displacement of air inside the small tank, but maybe it has a vacuum. WOuld the freezer treatment be the secret to this? Thanks again!

  • @AdinoEznite The freezer is used so that as gas gets in it remains cool thus meaning you can store more gas in it as cold gas takes up less volume that hot gas. There is no secret, its like putting tap water into a water bottle.

  • Do I need a dog to do this? What type of dog should I buy?

  • @AdinoEznite Ahahahahahahahahahahah XD

  • @AdinoEznite and safety glasses and a condom - one for yourselfe and another for your dog

  • thats dangerous, i gurantee you some idiots have tried this and hurt themselves. i have my propane license

  • niezłe niezłe

  • you got my thumbs up for "dont try thos at home without safety glasses and a condom" lol

  • Ok I'm 17 n refill propane tanks n know for the fact that that one has no opd n can easily be overfilled n burst

  • I cut the top off and refill them with water. Is that against the law?

  • I have a question, because i airsoft i use propane as a cheaper alt. for green gas. I was wondering with my empty propane tank(Mini one) can i push down the needle and put alot of silicone oil in it then refill it? Thanks

  • Those little green tanks used to be 2.50. Dang! Good video. You can easily refill the green bottles. It is supposedly a federal offense to ship or transport them though. lol. (not for personal use I guess)

  • I was looking for Hank Hill....

  • Bull Sh*t its available at wal mart !

  • I tried to make one of these a couple years ago, but it won't work because there is a small check valve in the old torch nozzle, the brass part that goes into the green cylinder. How did you undo that?

  • @HarleyFXS remove the check valve?

  • I know that thesé bottles freezes on refill.

  • It certainly sounds cheap but I reckon the risk of getting blown up is enough to put me off!

  • WOW $13.49 for a 3 pack?!

A 4 pack here at Fleet Farm costs $9.99

  • disclaimer was the best part of the video, imo.

  • you can buy a refill thingy at cabelas for 20$

  • dude u tut every 2 seconds its fucking anoying

  • Hank hill would kick your ass. lol

  • what is it about propane that makes me nervous? oh thats right, this shit! lol

  • got u guys are fucknuts.. i work for a propane company

500,000 grand AND 5 yrs in federal prison. - look on the tag that comes with the tank

besides, if you fill the tank and set it in the sun full, on a hot day it can bevel and burst. you guys are all fools

  • @imtherightguy Hey propane guy, those fines and regulations only hold true for certified handlers. Kind of like the fines for doing work on ac systems. Because i'm certified I can be fined for illegal actions involving refrigerant. Plus half the kids on youtube cant even read so i'm sure they can beat the case in court because the word "dude" was not stated on the warning label. I do recomend gloves seriously if you attempt this. And try not to smoke.

  • You can buy a similar adapter on Amazon.com, just search for Mr Heater propane adapter.

  • Where can I find another regulator for my small tank that I have a regulator for big tanks but i want one for my little one because my grill broke. I need the regulator that connects to the little small tanks head. Can i find it at home depot or no

  • @ChillMood11 A propane company can make you a custon fitting using an 'coleman' type fitting that will connect to a standard regulator.

  • It's not illegal to refill them but you'd have to DIY as most, if not all, propane refill centers won't do it. I've done this for the past three years and have 6 bottles I use in rotation. Looks like it's time for your valve to be replaced or rebuilt. :)

  • just LMFAO

The government doesn't want you to know that those little green propane tanks ARE in fact refillable!

  • Hank hill will use this DIY to do it himself, cause he needs propane in smaller tanks.

  • I really do not like wearing condoms...crap, now I have to pay full price again!

  • when I was refilling them a few years back to blow up, I learned a few things, its only illegal to refill them if you are transporting them, its DOT that says those arent refillable. and the other thing is if you put a 90* bend in your tubing and leave the bottles upside down for an hour or two you get a lot more liquid in there. the bottles i would blow up used to be devoid of gas but I would let those bottles sit overnight and some times longer

  • It's not even illegal to transport them, if refilled. As long as they are not being transported for commerce. If they are for personal use, you can refill and transport all you want. Just don't sell them, or charge money or pay someone to transport them and you will not break any of the D.O.T. regulations.

  • tank should be weighted before and after filling, so you have an idea of how much propane is inside, as filling it more then it's supposed to be can and will be dangerous, especially in hot weather...

If the amount of propane is equal or less then the specified weight, then it should be OK...

  • @AKAtheA not dangerous at all, they have a pressure relief valve on them that if you over fill them when the gas inside starts to gas off in warm weather and the pressure rises to X PSI they vent a little bit,

and its only illegal in the US if you transport them after refilling, DOT is why they arent refillable

  • @MF11283 these little cylinders do not have a pressure relief

  • @imtherightguy sure about that???? cause everyone i have does, along with my mapp gas bottles

  • @imtherightguy might wanna go check again

  • @imtherightguy you are correct, they do not have an automatic pressure relief. They do have a manual relief valve. At rest one pound of propane exerts 70 pso roughly unless agitated or heated then could excede 110 psi.I'm fairly confident those green little bottles can handle that kind of pressure considering refrigerant has the same.Take note on what the big guys do.bleed the air as you fill.he did fail to meantion why the bottle was upsidedown.so your bottle was filled with liquid not gas.

  • yur a dumb ass. go ahead and blow yurself up to save some damn money

  • @MrBushcraft81 its no more dangerous then screwing a lantern or torch onto one of those bottles

  • Propane boils at a really low temp like liquid nitrogen does. Well actually much higher than liquid nitrogen. Propane will "boil" just like water boils on a stove at 212, propane will boil at minus 45 degrees (-45) at this temp if you opened a valve on a propane tank its nothing but liquid with no gas. Now from zero psi at -45 to about 200 psi on a 100 degree day outside the tank will continue to gain pressure. if you freeze one and heat the other you have a pressure differential. Liquid flows

  • also it is equalizing pressure that is why you don't need a regulator and as long as you use a 20lb bottle with an opv valve wich is overfill prevention valve meaning the 20lb bottle was not over filled then it will not over fill the little bottle but dot states that you can not transport small bottles after being refilled

  • avalable in haborfraight about six bucks the adaptor that is

  • I will try to finish this soon as it is important

JUST DON'T DO MONKY SEE MONKY DO unles you truly know what safety isues there are.

  • The danger is htat you can over fill a LPG tank, they should NEVER BE FILLED MORE THAN 80%. If filled over the 80% and the tank is subject to HEAT the LIQUID AND VAPOR WILL EXPAND! THE TANK HAS A SAFETY OVER PRESURE RELIEF VALVE THAT WILL VENT FLAMABLE GAS AND POSSIBY

  • Why do you put the small tanks in the freezer?

  • I don't see why as well.

  • @pwhallon when you freeze the tank the proapne will condense from gas state to liquid state. this will give the tank more room for the propane gas to enter. it will also reduce the pressure in the tank making it easier to fill up.

  • yeah and a cell phone can cause your car to catch fire when you fill your tank. seriously, dont make statements you know nothing about, it really is dumb. there are no open sparks across a circut board and propane gas is heavier than air so there is no way any leaked propane in this video could ever ignite from a camera. so congrats to you on being a dumbass.

  • @dukelogan I thought the cell phone ban was because it could potentially interfere with the electronics in the petrol pump thus allowing you to pay less!

  • That is called a blevy.

  • Alright. First off, if you turn a propane tank that is anything larger than the white tank used (in this case, a 21.6 litre capacity, or more commonly referred to as a 20lb-er), the force fo the liquid propane would blow out the valve...So that's a no-no. Second, there's a reason why propane refillers NEVER intentionally fill a tank beyond 80% capacity because the gasses under pressure could expand beyond the confines of the pressure cylinder....meaning BOOM. Third, when the secondary valve is

  • govt doesnt want ordinary people doing it because its dangerous

  • great vid!

how do you know the small tank is not over filled? as this can be dangerous.

  • yea needs a regulator and recommended pressure for the mini bottle

  • Looks dangerous..... 5 Stars!!!

  • safty glasses and a condom lol

  • "Remember kids this is dangerous and probably illegal so don't try this at home"

    LMAO!!!

  • great vid! yes they are in fact refillable! Good on ya for saving the environment by reducing landfill waste, if you have any onfo on refilling the small butane/propane canisters, i would love to know, i may have to make my own adapter.

  • just order one from cabelas

  • im talking about filling the jetboil or kovea style canisters

  • dont they sell refillers like that at harborfreight?

  • "Unless you're wearing safety glasses, and a condom!" lol

  • When I fill my propane 1 lb tank i always feel the liquid propane at the bottom of the tank.

  • those little propane tanks cost less than 3 bucks where i live

  • true, but its not the liquid you want, its the gas. i do this all the time and never turn it upside down

  • you are an idiot, you want the liquid in your small tanks because that turns into gas and then is useable! pick up a new one- you can feel the liquid inside. It's stored in liquid state to save space... duh!

  • you are the idiot, the only reason it is a liquid is because it is compressed. when you release the pressure it turns back into a gas, there is no way to stop that from happening. so it doesnt matter if its upside down or not

  • nope, you are because if the liquid doesn't go into your small tank you won't have shit for storage. Quit pretending that you know shit.

  • as a matter of fact i do know what im talking about! when you open the valve on the big tank it releases pressure, when the pressure goes down the liquid turns into a gas, when the gas is pressurized in the other tank it turns back into to a liquid. if you dont beleive me then go and look it up some where. i have been filling tanks for 5 years now and i think i now what im talking about

  • actually it does matter, the tank has to be upside down while filling because you need to transfer the liquid propane from one container to the other.

  • no it doesnt,

  • Yes it does. I've been certified to fill propane tanks since 2004. I think I know what I'm talking about.

  • if you were truly certified then you would know that propane is a gas that turns to liquid when it was compressed and back to gas when the pressure is released, therefore it does not matter if the tank is upside down or not

  • I know that! but the liquid level is always on the bottom of the tank, therefore when you open the valve with it right side up only gas will come out. Uncompressed gas. it doesn't magically recompress itself... that's why propane filling stations always have the filling outlets on the bottom of the tank..duh!

  • im not going to sit here and argue with some idiot who doesnt know what hes talking about.

  • the gas doesn't magically gain pressure and turn into a liquid in the other tank. the only way you could make it do that is to re-compress it...

  • you took the words right out of my mouth :D

  • at least im not one here thinking i know everything telling people that that do know what their talking about that their wrong

  • ah well skip it, no use arguing. peace.

  • @lmyhoosier you guys are both right. you more so. Where your wrong is in wasting your time. it takes longer to fill the way you do but it may be safer due to the 80% fill level max. Keep filling the way you do. You know it works, and so does anyone with common sense..

  • So the tank is always filled with liquid? no the liquid stays at the bottom and the top is filled with gas. if you fill the tank from the top of the big tank, then only gas will go into the small tank, and the liquid from the big tank will evaporate to compensate. But why would liquid majically form in the small tank? if its upside down, the liquid will flow down into the big one. When the tank empties, the liquid evaporates to compensate, just because its under its own presure it wont go liquid

  • as a matter of fact it does turn into a liquid when it is compressed. you have no idea what your talking about so dont make yourself look like a retard and just shut up

  • Yes it does goes to liquid, but it will not compress itself into a liquid. you need more pressure, more than it creates itself. also, during the filling proces, the big tank gets cold, because liquid turns to gas, so once it heats up to normal temperature, for that gas to go back to liquid you need to take out the heat, how are you goign to do that?

  • How am i gonna do that? by putting the little tank in the freezer for a hour then refilling with propane from the big tank

  • it helps but its not necesary. But when CO2 tanks are filled for paintball you know they fill them a bit, empty them so they get frost outside then fill them? because if they try to fill them warm the CO2 becomes a gas inside the botle and does not fill completly.

So yes, you should freeze it for a while before filling them. and remember to fill them with liquid, not gas, like someone else sugest

  • Yes I knew you were going to say that before i posted this comment.

  • Gas cannot go back to liquid just by compression, it needs to loose energy as heat. When Prop is compressed in the plant, it gets hot, they cool it, then release the pressure and it condenses, same as an A/C. If you put gas into the Canister, it will stay gas until its super compressed or cooled. You need some super cooling to cool it back to liquid, or some extreme pressure. The propane cannot compress itself back to liquid, gas trying to be liquid is same presure and liquid trying to be gas.

  • i thought i told you to shut the fuck up. you have no idea what your talking about and you are making a fool out of your self for millions of people to see.

  • And who are you to tell me to STFU? you're the one swearing, how about you explain you theory? there is allready a 2 to 1 agaisnt you. Explain you theory of how gas compresses itself back to liquid once it has absorbed thermal energy and changed state?

is you reply goign to be 3 lines long saying "stfu you idiot/moron/(insert derrogatory here) but no explanation?

  • i have all ready explained it multiple time. if you where smart enough to read the past comments then you would have seen them. now shut the fuck up and suck on a propane hose.

  • Oh sorry sir, I was not aware of that, i should od what you say, after all you are using profanity, so you are probably right and have autorithy. KMA, deepstick, how about YOU STFU

  • one who noes what their talking about are not required to shut the fuck up. however, now it alls who have no idea what their talking about are indeed required to shut the fuck the up. that being said i think its time for you to go. is that mommy calling you for your nap?

  • You talk with such authority, yet can't even spell "knows" you know what you're talking about, but dont know how to spell it, haha

Seeing as how I have a bachelors in thermodynamics, and finishing my masters in Electrical Engineering, Workign with DOD to review a desing flaw in a sub-zero cooling unit for some Thermal laser targeting units, I might KNOW what I'm talking about.

I see how the other guy gave up on you, so have I

  • It happens when the little tank is cold from the freezer at 0:35 when he says to chill them

  • This will not work with the tanks with the OPD Valve. No fuel will flow due to the float mechanism

  • Well my adapter works with OPD Valve and i get liquid into my tank.

  • I just refilled a couple of small cylinders yesterday from my inverted, OPD-equipped 20-lb propane tank, just like in this video. Worked fine.

  • I'll try it and see if it works Thanks for the info

  • the setup this guy has wont work, just because he has his tank upside down. it is supposed to be upright

  • Please look closer and adjust your glasses. $4.49 each, 3 pack $13.49. Economical to refill but if your worried about your own failure to follow safety measures and blowing yourself up, just pay $4.49 and buy a new one :)

  • lol safety glases an a condom

  • look closely, the add says 4.49 for 3 of them

  • u can buy the refill adapter at cabelas, it take exactly 1 minute to refill, and it is only illegal to transport the refilled bottles

  • its not illegal to transport refilled bottles. its federal law to transport ANY propane cylinder in an upright position. but its not illegal to transport them, they just have to be upright

  • it is illegal to transport 1lb propane bottles that have been refilled, it says so on the package of the adapter

  • How are they gonna know it's been refilled? Screw the cops!

  • How did he almost burn his house down? Was he smoking or something?

I think you would have a better chance of blowing something up when people try to light their bbq - doesnt lite at first then all of a sudden they get a spark BOOM.

P.S> to Glurt, thanks for posting this -my dad was asking about this very thing.

  • He almost burn his house down probably because of an ignition source in the garage. If your going to fill one of these tanks, do it outside. That way any leaking propane (like seen on this video 1:44 ) dissipates into the air instead of building up in your house or garage until they find a source of ignition... Eg, electrical switches, arcing A/C plugs, water heaters, or static Bob who tends to shock you in the neck.

  • wholy S*%t, I didnt see that dripping out at 1:44 - good eye.

  • how could they possibly tell its been refilled?

  • U can feel it because it is liquid gas so just shake it and you will realize how full it is

  • you can buy your little adapter thingy at Cabelas.

  • thats actually a great idea... a bit dangerous however i almost fell off my chair at the end. Dont do this at home.. unless your wearing saftey glasses .. and a condom. ROFL! and i was going to say check the weights, but some one already did here.

  • And how would anyone know it had been refilled?

  • One way is to reckord the weight of the brand new canister and compare this figure to the refilled, it should be close

  • You could also weigh a full factory filled mini tank, and then go by that for a measurement. That is how they fill co2 tanks for paintball guns.

  • u can get (SOME) refilled my dads work does that stuff but nutitn leaks lol

  • Ah yes....but only if they catch you!

  • I noticed your large tank is not an OPD valve. Will this work with OPD? any modifications needed?

  • Better not smoke, light matches, scrape steel against flint, or rub two sticks together while doing this...

...'tis good though, I have always avoided those little propane tanks for camp stoves on the grounds that the tanks can't be refilled at the proprane store - its a bit wasteful.

I did have one of the valves fail when using one once - the gas was leaking out the little valve on the side; got the flame to stop then let the gas vent off...

  • You just give the can a shake and feel how much liquid is inside - or how heavy it gets.

  • how do you know when to stop filling?

  • Refilling disposable propane cylinders should be done by weight. The net weight is printed on the label. Weigh the empty cylinder on a sensitive scale, then refill it. If it is overweight, vent a little of the gas until the total weight is the empty (tare) weight plus the rated net weight. If you overfill, the pressure relief valve will prevent rupture, but it may vent at an inconvenient time or place!
