i cant hear a tune either. but im strangely quite happy about that. isnt it a relief to have something that is obviously music but not have a tune shoved down your throat. It's like when someone tells you that poetry doesnt have to rhyme to be poetry..
I have never understood why anyone wants to waste their energy trying to convince me I shouldn't be liking something. I guess some people just have some unresolved anger, and I wish them well in finding out its real cause. Meanwhile, like it or don't like it and depart, it's your choice. Wayne Shorter has provided me countless hours of inspiration and delight. I'm sad for those who haven't gotten it.
jazz is like all music is. Listen if you like it, and if you don't, listen other thing. Don't waste energy discussing about that. Just enjoy it, those guys who are playing they do it for you to enjoy, not to analize it. Be smart.

This is music for other musicians. It isn't fair to require an audience to "comprehend" what you are doing. If they don't get it, you aren't communicating effectively.
And even as an improvising musician, I find this to be intolerable. It has no energy and no heirarchy of ideas. It has no structure, but is too structured to make a point of being structureless. It goes nowhere over the course of 8 minutes. I love all of these guys, but this is why people hate jazz. Music for musicians.
Learn the tune pathways. It's structured and they're playing a tune. Who says they're asking you to comprehend it or understand it?
Who cares if people hate jazz, or this music? People have hated all kinds of things over time and this is obviously a stretch for you but what is now considered to be straight ahead bop used to be the same way. If you want to be a critic know what you're talking about though, especially in regards to hierarchy of ideas and structure.
Learn the tune pathways -> Who says they're asking you to comprehend it?
Comprehend the tune -> Who says they're asking you to comprehend it?
...what?
I don't know what they're asking of anyone, but it sounds to me like you ARE asking me to comprehend it in order to like it. By saying "learn the tune" you automatically imply that in order to gain any kind of enjoyment out of my listening experience, I have to come to the table having done my research. I don't agree.
My problem is with the general attitude surrounding this music of "You don't get it, you don't know the harmonic structure of Pathways." Because there are so many people who share your "learn the tune" attitude, Jazz has become an elitist craft, patronized mainly by its own practitioners, or people who "know the tune." And as a jazz player, I DO care when people are turned off to so many beautiful ideas because they feel like they're missing the point. Ask some who isn't a jazz musician.

You're saying that it's structured and they're playing a tune. That's irrelevant. My point is that it doesn't matter whether they're playing a tune. It doesn't SOUND like a tune to me, and I'm educated (don't be so quick to call me out on what is or is not a stretch for me, you know nothing about me). I would argue that this probably wouldn't sound like a tune to the average listener. You prove my point for me. If you have to learn the tune to like it, there's an error of communication.
Who cares about your "education" or whether you think you are a jazz musician or not? Lots of people love what these guys are doing (myself included) and can definitely hear a song here. If you don't like it, or don't get it, do us a favor and go to another video.
this is no more abstract than 90 percent of shorter's holland's and hancock's respective catalogs. what did you expect when you clicked on this video?
The problem isnt jazz, it's the way listening has changed over the past decades. No popular artists release records of songs any longer than like 4 minutes. People dont want to take any time to understand the full effect of a tune. Instant gratification is the name of the game in the popular music business for the most part nowadays. If someone doesnt comprehend it, remove yourself from your comfort zone. It's no ones fault but your own. These guys kick ass.
Aye get a life. You'd most probably dig Kenny G and the sort. Call yourself a jazz musician. no..call yourself a musician! Yes i agree, jazz music does require you to do your homework before you can start appreciating it. but THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT. It's just like any other art form. If art is as shallow as you seem to want it to be, then it is not art anymore, for art transcends the conscious into your subconsious. If you wana be a lazyass, go listen to you ella ella under my umbrella then.
@jetzine00 Ignorance and the refusal to open your ears and mind to something new and revolutionary is obvious in your comment. This is a modal piece of extraordinary sense and sound. If your sense of structure is the 12 bar blues or the 32 bar form along with the rhythmic concept of swing and backbeat then you obviously have ear and mind limitations. Modern classical and jazz music has culminated to this great sound and concept. Obviously you can't 'hear' and absorb it. That is so unfortunate.
These are some of the greatest improvisers sharing the stage. This is beautiful. If only we could all comprehend and enjoy this side of jazz. I love this.
so nice ! です.

I'll admit, sometimes Wayne's latest stuff is too abstract for me and doesn't swing, but this is beautiful!

I agree with jameslanni, music is made of musicians, but for musiclovers, which include all people (including musicians, yes...)
