@cinqueottavi different cars. Both are good cars...both will do what ever you ask them to do exceptionally well...both are subtle cars, quick, and reliable. Now, if you have to choose, think about which one delivers more fun with out so many drawbacks. GTI is turbo, so you'll be getting burst of power compared to the easy linear power from the R32. On the road, I would always go with the R32...two reasons. One, 4Motion (more grip is better on the road), and easier to drive on winding roads.
@cinqueottavi welcome to the world of the R32...tons of fun are guaranteed...plus 99.99% of satisfaction...I bought mine on 2008 (october), and to date, I have no regrets...no issues...and above all, WHAT A SOUND!!!
mmmmm i have that vw r32 and i dont like it its too gasoline spender was a 2009 so i decide to change , i have now a volkswagen gol gti its year 2000 , its dohc 1.6 16 valves (ap1600) its an 80s audi motor , more faster and more economical on gas and more cheaper car ,it have a indestructible block xD so i decide to put some turbo and muffler ,suspension its bettter too , i know i can beat thease two easy. always use manual transmission only
But it will shift like a manual trans in tiptronic mode it will hold a gear just like a manual trans for upshifting and downshifting except when you come to a stop it defaults to first gear. I've driven and owned many cars but the r32 is by far the most enjoyable car I've ever owned. It's truly in a league of it's own!!!
Here's my question: How does shifting the car in 'sport' work. (I get the DSG and paddle shifters) What I don't understand is if the car can still shift automatically while you're in 'sport' how much control do you ACTUALLY have over shifting? Can you drive the car at high revs or does it shift for you before you can reach them?
Do all the Golf's have the same body?? i mean i know that the suspension may be lower on different models and the front bumper designs may differ a little bit but overall all the Golf models have the same body right??
R32 has a more solid luxury car feel than the GTi which in a way is not what a hot hatch is meant to feel but VW have created a small to medium hatch back that has a drive feel of a much larger GT type car but can still beat a GTi around a race track, have a much more comfortable ride plus that head turning exhaust sound...
I just sold my 2008 wrx to buy a 2007 R32 2- door 6 speed manual. The subaru has a woeful interior and a rat-shit paint job. Paper thin! Much happier with the VW, it's a more adult version of the Subaru concept. But then, I am now in my 30's.

Best car review I've ever seen! And I've watched a lot! You're very good at what you do! You explained the differences between the two cars very well, especially the two different engine characteristics. Well done!
different engine, yea the 3.2 is a great sounding engin... not so much with the 2.8 >.>... i own a 18T :) love the mark 4 R32, one of my favorite cars.... puts a smile on my face everytime... vr6 is teh lamesauce
Hey Guys Im Looking at Buying either an R32 or a GTI. The R32 is 2006 14876 miles DSG and Nav. The GTI is 2010 6,000 miles fully loaded.. Both are $27,998.... which should i buy????? and why.
@HDBeatProductions with out a doubt the r32. even though its a mk5 vs the gti mk6, the 14k miles make it as close to brand new as you can for a r32. and being the r32 is limited, it would have a higher resale value if you decide later on to upgrade. besides that the r32 is better in every spec compared to the gti. but i would try to hustle the price down to 25k.
@Robert95grand hey fuckface so does that mean that Bentley Continentals and Ferrari's arent luxurious cause theyre not sedans? youre the retard...retard. next think about what the other person wrote before you hurl insults and make yourself look like a fucking shitwad

An Evo without a Turbo and without all of the electronic goodies is just a POS lancer. The standard WRX is still a fast car but I still say the r32 will be faster. though maybe not around a track
good review, guys. glad to see some people are fair and observant in their discussion of cars, rather than superficial and bombastic without telling you anything.
@taylor1212eminem.do your homework. i,m right. no gti will get to 60 in 5.9sec. in the evo uk test. best it did was 6.9. the R32 did 5.8. americans always talk bollocks when it comes to performance cars.
@santclause1 No no no, your doing it wrong. You're not supposed to be the stupid one. The stereotype is that Americans are dumb, not you Santa. It's spelled douche. Haha
@santclause1 You can believe whatever you want, but I own a MKVI GTI and I do get 6.0 to 60MPH. and a EVO doing 0-60 in 5.9? there must have been something very wrong with that car. An EVO can pully a 5.0 0-60 easily. Just for the record, MotorTrend clocked a 5.8 0-60 on a stock MKVI GTI.
I've got a r32 2006 black with miltec ex, with the recaro bucket seats, 3dr and love it. It sounds great n leaves the others cars behind. It just feels so good to drive, I got abit Bord with driving till I got it n now it's like how it was when I starting drivin :) get one if u can.
Why compare it to the Lancer Evo and Impreza STI if you're going to talk about changable stuff, like exhaust? or things that Evo and STI owners wouldn't mind riping off or out, like the interior?
Terrific review. For me the difference is looks and rarity. I own a red MKV R32 and it turns heads and gets accolades everywhere I go. Plus, that melodious exhaust note. Downside: terrible mileage. But as they say, it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. Bottom line: It's a head turner and a collector - I think I'll keep it.
awesome review - finally by someone who knows what to comment on and it seems to be from experience vs. others (which tend to sound like they have come from a newspaper review)
For street drivers on a budget, the R32 may not make sense vs a less-than-loaded GTi. But on the track (road, not oval) and the autocross course the R32 runs circles around the GTi. I know because I've done it routinely. Drag-race figures are overrated.
As for DSG vs manual, I've driven both and DSG is the future. You don't even need to do heel-toe: the DSG blips the throttle for you when you downshift. It's no wonder F1 cars moved to automanual many years ago.
The more I look at it the more I fall in love with the R32. Yeah its not as fast as its competitors but not everyone buys a car to race. Its also a hell of a lot more refined and better looking than an Evo or STI. If I can find an 08 for around 25K or less I'd scoop it up in a heartbeat.
Sure...there are cars that can beat the R32 such as the MazdaSpeed 3 or Evo but it's true... the R32 has a much better for everyday driving and it is more like a work of art instead of a little boy racer car like the others. I'll take a R32 over the others anyday
DSG is also a manual transmission without having to step on a clutch. Paddleshifters are also on the wheel. This guy even mentions how the DSG is MUCH quicker than a manual. Excluding the need to let the gas go, while stepping on the clutch to place the next gear into drive.
how could you say that ? if here on you tube is review of these both cars )) they compare previews generation of MPS3 and R32 ))) and mazda beats r32 ))) I'm saying it because I saw what I'm saw )))
yeah but try accelerating hard when the road is wet in a chipped gti , and your never gona get that sound of the exhaust on a gti .. both nice cars but r32 clearly the winner
gti for the same price can be tuned and have a loud spool of the turbo under exceleration and alot of wheel spin and reach 0-100 in about the same time
id recommend r32 ... attention every ware you go ..
gti and r32 go exactly the same...you see the difference in the wet... the advantage the r32 has is its 4wd system, awsome in the wet... chip your gti and goodluck getting traction in the wet.
you have no idea. I thought the same. DSG feels just like driving stick. Call me an idiot but I reached for the clutch on the test drive when i pulled away from the lot to shift to 2nd. It feels great. blipped downshifts. no delay shifts. firm, fast shifts.
No, not as much control as with a conventional manual, but much better than most humans.
I really enjoyed this review, unlike most American video car reviews, he doesn't just concentrate on purely technical things that many of us dont understand, and he actually has some emotion in his presentation. well done
just wait for gti r20, it will be much better much faster than r32 and gti. it 2.0 litter twin turbo 300hp, it release at 2010 or 2011 also vw will not make r32 any more when r20 out.
It gonna be called R20 and it the direct replacement for the R32, indeed has a 2.0 liter engine but develops only 270hp,,,in germany you can already order it from the vw site, the base it 36.000€
no offence man...but 4 cylinder engines (I4) can't have a twin turbo, TT can only be installed on (V) &( W) engines(like V6, V8, W12, W16) . actually (W) engines can have up to four turbos :)
Go for the R32. I like the fact that it is a limited production car and it is normally aspirated. Which means fewer R32s on the road and I don't have to wait around for the turbo to boost power.
I recommened the gti either 5th or 6th generation...don't worry about the turbo lag because it's barely noticable. actually if you engage the launch control (guess what....there is no turbo lag?!!) and if performance is your top priority, you can smoke the R32 anytime with a chipped GTI. Also the fuel economy is much much better on the GTI.
@CarReview07 Agree, I have the silver r32, Ive never seen another one. I love how rare it is. The power is there when you need it and on the highway I get around 24mpg. I paid 23000
with the awd at launch there isn't near the wheel spin as the gti leaves them in the dust... I found mine on carmax goodluck finding one.... There is the option to go without the nav saved me $2000
If you want thunderous power and awesome engine noise, you buy the R32. If you want to tune your car, the GTI is faster after u tune it. But the R32 is nicer inside and outside. Both are very nice, you cant go wrong, but there's just something about the v6 R32 that grows on you, that's why I bought the R. 4297 of 5000
@beast2711 I own a MKV GTI and gotta say it is the nicest car i've ever driven. Go with the new GTI ... the MKVI is even more refined than the MKV, plus you'll get better mpg , . . the Turbo and intake sound definitely won me over. the turbo lag is very negligible, plus you'll be saving 300 lbs. btw unlike the video, the turbo doesn't 'whine' it is more of a 'whoosh' sound when it spools.
The mk5 GTI is much improved over the mk4. For months i was debating over Mazdaspeed3 or the GTI until i finally test drove both cars repeatedly. GTI was hands down the better car. Mazdaspeed looks better on paper but the GTI interior is much better and the 2.0T engine really impressed me the 200hp feels more like 250hp and the DSG transmission is unreal!!!
R32 is one of the best all around sports car of today. Its AWD so you get no torque steer from FWD or understeer from RWD. And it gets 5.5 seconds to sixty. And It's luxurious. This is a awesome car.
The Gti I had was back at the service centre more times that I can remember. Never once have I had the r32 at the service centre for more than a standard service. Guess the assembly was better in Germany than South Africa! But having said that I wouldn't have one without warranty because of the technology & engineneering which would add to the cost of repair if some thing was to go wrong.
Had GTi V for 2 years & this car makes the GTi feel less engineered. Living with both cars shows how much the R32 has smoothed out the subtle flaws that the GTi has.
the models between 2000 and 2004 are very unreliabe, especially the ones made in mexico, i know many passat owners of 2000-2001 and the reliability is horrible
Had GTi V for 2 years, bought R32 V. Reasons for the R32, exotic exhaust sound, slows down through the gears, brakes have better feel & don't grab at low speeds, standard incredibly bright xeons lights & leather, all wheel drive that counters understeer, suspension set up more composed & compliant, squat look, wheels fill out wheel arches, much more exclusive. Gti's good points - fuel economy many litres per 100km's better off , more steering feed back, turbo push in the seat, cheaper price
My opinion... the GTI Mk V is vastly superior! Why? I love the feel of the turbo as it spools and lets loose on the unsuspecting public. It's markings are better! That black front grill with the bright red smile!? It is much lighter?! And from what I have read it can do better lap times than the R32 on the track... unless there are sloping hills and canyon runs. GTI Gets better fuel mileage... I can get up to 34 mpg if I don't run all out. The R32 gets about 17-25 mpg? Why spend 35K?

@santclause1 You can believe whatever you want, but I own a MKVI GTI and I do get 6.0 to 60MPH. and a EVO doing 0-60 in 5.9? there must have been something very wrong with that car. An EVO can pully a 5.0 0-60 easily. Just for the record, MotorTrend clocked a 5.8 0-60 on a stock MKVI GTI.
taylor1212eminem 1 year ago
rather than compare this to an sti or evo it should be compared to the plain wrx or ralliart. that would be a much closer more even comparison

MrPhatbuddha 1 year ago
Spend five thousand dollars in performance upgrades on this car and it will beat an EVO with 5 grand into it.
kj7687 1 year ago
the GTI MKV will be my next car. sadly, in my country the R32 it's taxed very hard due to the 3.2 V6.
volnick1986 1 year ago
Why compare it to the Lancer Evo and Impreza STI if you're going to talk about changable stuff, like exhaust? or things that Evo and STI owners wouldn't mind riping off or out, like the interior?
80857473 1 year ago
Nothing beats that 'Turbo' sound when it spools up ... may be biased since I own a MKV , but GTI over the R32 for me
disengagejam 1 year ago
the R32 is awesome, just hope no EVO or STI wants to race ....LOL.

Terrific review. For me the difference is looks and rarity. I own a red MKV R32 and it turns heads and gets accolades everywhere I go. Plus, that melodious exhaust note. Downside: terrible mileage. But as they say, it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. Bottom line: It's a head turner and a collector - I think I'll keep it.

shpresim13 1 year ago
For street drivers on a budget, the R32 may not make sense vs a less-than-loaded GTi. But on the track (road, not oval) and the autocross course the R32 runs circles around the GTi. I know because I've done it routinely. Drag-race figures are overrated.
As for DSG vs manual, I've driven both and DSG is the future. You don't even need to do heel-toe: the DSG blips the throttle for you when you downshift. It's no wonder F1 cars moved to automanual many years ago.
DeepClue 1 year ago
The more I look at it the more I fall in love with the R32. Yeah its not as fast as its competitors but not everyone buys a car to race. Its also a hell of a lot more refined and better looking than an Evo or STI. If I can find an 08 for around 25K or less I'd scoop it up in a heartbeat.
whitefangv 1 year ago
Sure...there are cars that can beat the R32 such as the MazdaSpeed 3 or Evo but it's true... the R32 has a much better for everyday driving and it is more like a work of art instead of a little boy racer car like the others. I'll take a R32 over the others anyday

@3edogg
i did take it over those, and its a dream to drive day to day, and its a blast to drive fast when i want to
DirtyYogurt 1 year ago
DSG is also a manual transmission without having to step on a clutch. Paddleshifters are also on the wheel. This guy even mentions how the DSG is MUCH quicker than a manual. Excluding the need to let the gas go, while stepping on the clutch to place the next gear into drive.

I noticed that you can find an MK5 r32 easier than an MK4, its crazy, but the GTi can beat the r32 after being chipped
LilNug 2 years ago
yeah but try accelerating hard when the road is wet in a chipped gti , and your never gona get that sound of the exhaust on a gti .. both nice cars but r32 clearly the winner

thats true, but im trying very hard to find an MK5 R32, then drop a turbo in it

r32 vr6 amazing sound 100% traction 5.5sec 0-100
or
gti for the same price can be tuned and have a loud spool of the turbo under exceleration and alot of wheel spin and reach 0-100 in about the same time
id recommend r32 ... attention every ware you go ..

i went with the r32. #3291
AND I LOVEEE IT!! I LOVE THE GTI TOO! my little brother!

gti and r32 go exactly the same...you see the difference in the wet... the advantage the r32 has is its 4wd system, awsome in the wet... chip your gti and goodluck getting traction in the wet.

Heh... 4:45-5:00... the mind control alien under the skin on his forehead squirms around.
Amazing car. DSG would ruin it for me, tho.
pimpb0tt 2 years ago
you have no idea. I thought the same. DSG feels just like driving stick. Call me an idiot but I reached for the clutch on the test drive when i pulled away from the lot to shift to 2nd. It feels great. blipped downshifts. no delay shifts. firm, fast shifts.
No, not as much control as with a conventional manual, but much better than most humans.

just wait for gti r20, it will be much better much faster than r32 and gti. it 2.0 litter twin turbo 300hp, it release at 2010 or 2011 also vw will not make r32 any more when r20 out.
Mryjin88 2 years ago
Its actually 270HP, but yeah R20 will kick some booty.
smizay 2 years ago
Yes but from what I've been told the R20 is only four cylinders.
DeMobBoss 2 years ago
true
vipeme1 2 years ago
It gonna be called R20 and it the direct replacement for the R32, indeed has a 2.0 liter engine but develops only 270hp,,,in germany you can already order it from the vw site, the base it 36.000€
Generalu81 2 years ago
it's called Golf R not R20.
no offence man...but 4 cylinder engines (I4) can't have a twin turbo, TT can only be installed on (V) &( W) engines(like V6, V8, W12, W16) . actually (W) engines can have up to four turbos :)
gtiw7 2 years ago
hey guys, I have a choice of buying an r32 or a gti VI. The r32 is a bit more expensive, but both are affordable.
Which one do you advise me to buy and why?
beast2711 2 years ago
Go for the R32. I like the fact that it is a limited production car and it is normally aspirated. Which means fewer R32s on the road and I don't have to wait around for the turbo to boost power.
CarReview07 2 years ago 11
You are right, but im a bit worried about the r32 being a 5th generation and the gti 6th
beast2711 2 years ago
I recommened the gti either 5th or 6th generation...don't worry about the turbo lag because it's barely noticable. actually if you engage the launch control (guess what....there is no turbo lag?!!) and if performance is your top priority, you can smoke the R32 anytime with a chipped GTI. Also the fuel economy is much much better on the GTI.
I would take the gti over the r32 anyday
gtiw7 2 years ago
I own a 2007 GTI four door. Believe me, the turbo lag on these cars is nothing. I am very happy with this car...and it was reasonably priced.
BulletsMakePeace 1 year ago
@CarReview07 Agree, I have the silver r32, Ive never seen another one. I love how rare it is. The power is there when you need it and on the highway I get around 24mpg. I paid 23000
with the awd at launch there isn't near the wheel spin as the gti leaves them in the dust... I found mine on carmax goodluck finding one.... There is the option to go without the nav saved me $2000
bentones79 1 year ago
@bentones79 What made you buy the R32 over the Sti? Did you drive the sti? Are you happy with your decision?
hawkeyesurfer 11 months ago
If you want thunderous power and awesome engine noise, you buy the R32. If you want to tune your car, the GTI is faster after u tune it. But the R32 is nicer inside and outside. Both are very nice, you cant go wrong, but there's just something about the v6 R32 that grows on you, that's why I bought the R. 4297 of 5000
trevinboy 2 years ago
had gti for two years then the r32. Think of the r32 as an Audi with a VW badge. It's just class and feels much more complete.
xpeerecent 1 year ago
@beast2711 GTI, because it comes it 6 speed and turbo is great
shanemm1 1 year ago
@beast2711 I own a MKV GTI and gotta say it is the nicest car i've ever driven. Go with the new GTI ... the MKVI is even more refined than the MKV, plus you'll get better mpg , . . the Turbo and intake sound definitely won me over. the turbo lag is very negligible, plus you'll be saving 300 lbs. btw unlike the video, the turbo doesn't 'whine' it is more of a 'whoosh' sound when it spools.
disengagejam 1 year ago
give me the r32
OttomanPower87 2 years ago
This car doesn't wheel spin so it can be driven hard 365 days a year!
xpeerecent 2 years ago 11
ive test driven both and the r32 sounds great and its alot faster then the gti as it sounds. i would totally take this car over the gti
dds4042 2 years ago
The mk5 GTI is much improved over the mk4. For months i was debating over Mazdaspeed3 or the GTI until i finally test drove both cars repeatedly. GTI was hands down the better car. Mazdaspeed looks better on paper but the GTI interior is much better and the 2.0T engine really impressed me the 200hp feels more like 250hp and the DSG transmission is unreal!!!
juvechii 2 years ago
R32 is one of the best all around sports car of today. Its AWD so you get no torque steer from FWD or understeer from RWD. And it gets 5.5 seconds to sixty. And It's luxurious. This is a awesome car.
Slool 2 years ago
The Gti I had was back at the service centre more times that I can remember. Never once have I had the r32 at the service centre for more than a standard service. Guess the assembly was better in Germany than South Africa! But having said that I wouldn't have one without warranty because of the technology & engineneering which would add to the cost of repair if some thing was to go wrong.
xpeerecent 2 years ago
Had GTi V for 2 years & this car makes the GTi feel less engineered. Living with both cars shows how much the R32 has smoothed out the subtle flaws that the GTi has.

Gti's good points - fuel economy many litres per 100km's better off , more steering feed back, turbo push in the seat, cheaper price
xpeerecent 2 years ago
FI>N/A
so much more potential.
i do wish the gti was awd tho. if it was awd.. that car would be ridiculous
nate12290 2 years ago
yeah 2.0t would be epic with AWD, companies like APR have bolt on kits which get them running 400m in the 11s/12s!!!
averagejimmy 2 years ago
My opinion... the GTI Mk V is vastly superior! Why? I love the feel of the turbo as it spools and lets loose on the unsuspecting public. It's markings are better! That black front grill with the bright red smile!? It is much lighter?! And from what I have read it can do better lap times than the R32 on the track... unless there are sloping hills and canyon runs. GTI Gets better fuel mileage... I can get up to 34 mpg if I don't run all out. The R32 gets about 17-25 mpg? Why spend 35K?

VW- 4Motion (Before it was syncro, the first version of syncro was born in vw iltis very much time before Quattro appeared)
Audis- Quattro.
Both brands are amazing and have amazing cars but people forget that most of the audi´s fame is inherited from VW.
Thats why i have a vw instead of the equivalent audi that costs some more cash for no reason...
