At Later stage of life, he became Jain sanyasi leaving his kingdom to son Bindusar under the guidance of Chanakya(Vishnugupt). Basically there was almost tradition to take sanyasa at later stage of life. Aambhi was sent to sanyasa forcefully rather than killed.

I don't know if you got your answer or not that how chandragupta died. He adopted Jainism. It is said he died fasting which was according to Jainism a holy way of sacrificing mortal life.

It is said he died in a small temple marks cave (The name of the place is Bhadrabahu Cave and it is in karnataka)
