love the triple loop coming off a spread eagle in the slow section ..... how many times have i watched her programs and just marvel at how amazing her jumps are .... and her skating and transitions were good too as well as her spins and footwork ... she's the only one who really does transitions going into jumps back then
triple axel at the begining and triple-triple combination near the end of the program are a sign of a powerful skater. Nowdays, triple-triple is at the begining. No doubts about the gold metal
@OCEDNO Oh, I have just realized how old I am, because I remember this so well. Lovely to see this program here now, after all these years. Yes, you are so right, Midori won this competition. Today, who knows? But her program was planned according to the old rules, and it is not fair to compare then and now. I do believe that the young Midori could place well today.... Bravo Midori!
@urraco1 - On my worst day, you would never be smarter than me, or any Russian. Japan sends potential talents to be taught by the Russians. Japan has no existing athletic or artistic history of any worldclass significance. Even the Gymnasts come to Russia to steal secrets. So, shut up and go eat a live eel.
I normally get annoyed by Scott Hamilton commentating but here, he is absolutely right to be so excited by Midori Ito... She has fans all over the world, including here in London UK.
she was the only one woman in the world doing the triple axel now and the only one woman ever to have landed in the competition. awesome phrase ever said to the japanese athlete.
It is so Great to see Midori skate this perfect program. It brings tears to my eyes every time I watch this! She should have won the Gold, I believe Trenary beat her with her Artistry. Even though I know this is not a jumping contest, Midori deserved the Win in my opinion! She is truly an inspiration to watch!!
Best performance EVER by a lady. Still gives me goosebumps now - 22 years later. This, together ith her Olympics 88 free and Liz Manley's 88 Olympics free are my 3 favourite programmes of all time.
Without a single doubt or second thought, this has to be the greatest performance in the history of ladies figure skating if not figure skating in general. Absolute perfection.
Catch those deep edges on her landings - she almost looks like she is going to topple over - don't know why she had such trouble with figures when she had such tremendous edge control. That's another thing about her axel - look at how long she holds that fast, outflowing, outside edge landing - AMAZING AMAZING
@Chutson353 The problem of Midori'r figures was more of the financial issue. In order to practice figures, a skater needs a rink for himself/herself. Midori simply did not have enough ice time because her divorced mother, even with three jobs, was not able to afford. According to Midori's coach, due to the financial reason, the Junior World in 1981 was supposed to be Midori's first and last international competition.
@Chutson353 I have to disagree. I like Midori, she has great charisma, and I love her athleticism or her ability to jumps and spin. Athletically she is the best in history, but its hardly artistic.
If anyone create ART out of pure athleticism, its Mao Asada. Her soft knee, flexibility and the ease of it all make her skating look so effortlessly beautiful. Its what they call a "genuine artistry."
But ART is very subjective, i completely understand if you don't agree.
@Chutson353 I will have to say that I agree with Chutson353 more than collegeguy15. mao has an amazing triple axel but Mao's triple axel is not the same as Midori's triple axel ... Mao rotates really fast and is very precise and lands it well ... but Midori does it even better than the guys! ... the lift/ air ... that's the sort of stunning atheletism I feel Chutson353 is referring to ... beautiful because of its amazingness ...
@lutz84 Although let me say this because I get so tired of the bickering on youtube about "who is better" - this IS a subjective sport like it or not - and the different styles and abilities of the skaters is what makes it interesting and exciting - If we, the fans, didn't have different opinions about what is "great" we wouldn't see that diversity and so I respect Collegeguy15's opinion - BUT Ito's axel is the best ever - it's not just a jump - it's like a cannonball exploding across the sky.
Interestingly, Ito's free program here was BETTER and more technically difficult than anything Scott Hamilton (the commentator) ever did in his days (merely 5 years before). Glad that he recognized her gifts.
@USAGymnast I agree her artistry was underrated. I would rarely give her a 6.0 for artistry, but I would always give her a 5.8 or 5.9 for artistry unless she had a bad skate. I always hated to see her getting any 5.7s for artistry when she skated well, let alone sometimes worse.
@USAGymnast I TOTALLY agree. And, with all that, she had charm, grace, modesty and kindness as a person too. in 1991, where she jumped out of the rink & hit a camera man during her performance, she went back to check if he and his camera were ok.
OMG. NO more women in this world can jump higher than Midori anymore. NO MORE. Look at the height of her jump! She could even do a quad with that height of jump!
She was incredible in her day. I miss the old scoring system - the new scoring system isn't fun!! I would try and guess the technical merit and artistic impression scores back in them days.
And they say she didn't have "artistic" style please... her technique flawless her style all her own, she owned this!!! Best free skate ever up there with Nadia Bruce and Lance
This program is truly unbelievable.. she was SO damn far ahead of the competition, she could have competed, like Hamilton said, and won the male competition that year.

For elegance, you go to the Russians. This is just awful, clumsy, and not gold. A triple axel badly landed doesn't merit this world championship.

And she has a lot of combinations jump variations.
3T-3T, 2A-3T, 3lz-3T and 3A-3T.
