  • Best EVER Ladies performance. Still brings goose bumps after all this time.

  • that was almost 4A!

  • @ithinkformyseIf I dont know what you mean, have you seen jill trenary's skate after Midori's? Midori is a poet next to that Paula Abdul mess...

  • This program would have destroyed the field at the 2011 World Championships

  • @gabb9262 AMEN, and lets add 2003-2010 as well

  • love the triple loop coming off a spread eagle in the slow section ..... how many times have i watched her programs and just marvel at how amazing her jumps are .... and her skating and transitions were good too as well as her spins and footwork ... she's the only one who really does transitions going into jumps back then

  • I did the work, and I figured out that this program could have gotten a 141.25 total under the ISU Judging System. She really is amazing.

  • When i watch Midori skating, i never get tired, watching her is so exciting. Love her a lot, one of my fav. skater <3

Btw, anyone know the song she skated??

  • @thecakem

I believe this is "Concerto No. 1 for Piano" by Frank Mills

  • I thought the slow section for Midori was nicely interpretive of the music. Some pretty arm movements. She's amazing.

  • triple axel at the begining and triple-triple combination near the end of the program are a sign of a powerful skater. Nowdays, triple-triple is at the begining. No doubts about the gold metal

  • @OCEDNO Oh, I have just realized how old I am, because I remember this so well. Lovely to see this program here now, after all these years. Yes, you are so right, Midori won this competition. Today, who knows? But her program was planned according to the old rules, and it is not fair to compare then and now. I do believe that the young Midori could place well today.... Bravo Midori!

  • @Leonnidik Elena Sokolova. Kira Ivanova. Irina Slutskaya.

  • @Proustable -Agreed.

  • @Leonnidik i think you can't even land it so shut up

  • @Leonnidik Midori is a power skater . If you want ballet then go there.

  • @urraco1 - Tell that comment to the international skating judges and they will laugh in your face.

  • @Leonnidik Yea,, Like you would know that..

  • @urraco1 - For sure. In particular the Russians would laugh at you. They would throw you out of the rink for being an idiot.

  • @Leonnidik you must be a dumb ass russian

  • @Leonnidik you are laughable,and a misguided fool

  • @urraco1 - On my worst day, you would never be smarter than me, or any Russian. Japan sends potential talents to be taught by the Russians. Japan has no existing athletic or artistic history of any worldclass significance. Even the Gymnasts come to Russia to steal secrets. So, shut up and go eat a live eel.

  • I normally get annoyed by Scott Hamilton commentating but here, he is absolutely right to be so excited by Midori Ito... She has fans all over the world, including here in London UK.

  • I love everything about Midori Ito's skating. I think my favorite jump of hers, for me, is her 3Loop.

  • she's the greatest female figure skater for me. I like her energetic and vibrant style on the rink.

  • She is a legend!

  • she was the only one woman in the world doing the triple axel now and the only one woman ever to have landed in the competition. awesome phrase ever said to the japanese athlete.

  • It is so Great to see Midori skate this perfect program. It brings tears to my eyes every time I watch this! She should have won the Gold, I believe Trenary beat her with her Artistry. Even though I know this is not a jumping contest, Midori deserved the Win in my opinion! She is truly an inspiration to watch!!

  • @CMShioji: Midori Ito DID win gold here! There was no way that any one was going to beat this program, and no one did!

  • Best performance EVER by a lady. Still gives me goosebumps now - 22 years later. This, together ith her Olympics 88 free and Liz Manley's 88 Olympics free are my 3 favourite programmes of all time.

  • Without a single doubt or second thought, this has to be the greatest performance in the history of ladies figure skating if not figure skating in general. Absolute perfection.

  • Midori Ito was wire work and CG or alien.

  • She was more emotional than Tonya was when she landed hers in 1991.

  • Catch those deep edges on her landings - she almost looks like she is going to topple over - don't know why she had such trouble with figures when she had such tremendous edge control. That's another thing about her axel - look at how long she holds that fast, outflowing, outside edge landing - AMAZING AMAZING

  • @Chutson353 The problem of Midori'r figures was more of the financial issue. In order to practice figures, a skater needs a rink for himself/herself. Midori simply did not have enough ice time because her divorced mother, even with three jobs, was not able to afford. According to Midori's coach, due to the financial reason, the Junior World in 1981 was supposed to be Midori's first and last international competition.

  • OMG, the strength to hold on to that triple axel is unbelievable.

  • I've said it before and I'll say it again - the only skater in history to create ART out of pure athleticism - absolutely mesmerizing

  • @Chutson353 I have to disagree. I like Midori, she has great charisma, and I love her athleticism or her ability to jumps and spin. Athletically she is the best in history, but its hardly artistic.

If anyone create ART out of pure athleticism, its Mao Asada. Her soft knee, flexibility and the ease of it all make her skating look so effortlessly beautiful. Its what they call a "genuine artistry."

But ART is very subjective, i completely understand if you don't agree.

  • @Chutson353 I will have to say that I agree with Chutson353 more than collegeguy15. mao has an amazing triple axel but Mao's triple axel is not the same as Midori's triple axel ... Mao rotates really fast and is very precise and lands it well ... but Midori does it even better than the guys! ... the lift/ air ... that's the sort of stunning atheletism I feel Chutson353 is referring to ... beautiful because of its amazingness ...

  • @lutz84 Although let me say this because I get so tired of the bickering on youtube about "who is better" - this IS a subjective sport like it or not - and the different styles and abilities of the skaters is what makes it interesting and exciting - If we, the fans, didn't have different opinions about what is "great" we wouldn't see that diversity and so I respect Collegeguy15's opinion - BUT Ito's axel is the best ever - it's not just a jump - it's like a cannonball exploding across the sky.

  • I dont know why I just get goosebumps when she lands the triple axel

  • That's really amazing!

    She has a lots charismas,

    audience always loves her.

  • to me still the best jumper in womens figure skating in history...just listen to scott hamilitons voice he's amazed!

  • I wish Ito had skated like this in the 88 Olympics. She would have won gold easily.

  • Interestingly, Ito's free program here was BETTER and more technically difficult than anything Scott Hamilton (the commentator) ever did in his days (merely 5 years before). Glad that he recognized her gifts.

  • @mlc2005 there were many men who did technically harder programs than Hamilton. He was very lucky I think.

    突出し過ぎてて、笑うしかない;

    素晴らしい!

  • @USAGymnast I agree her artistry was underrated. I would rarely give her a 6.0 for artistry, but I would always give her a 5.8 or 5.9 for artistry unless she had a bad skate. I always hated to see her getting any 5.7s for artistry when she skated well, let alone sometimes worse.

  • OMG! This was the best performance I've ever seen.

  • Amazing flying!

  • @USAGymnast I TOTALLY agree. And, with all that, she had charm, grace, modesty and kindness as a person too. in 1991, where she jumped out of the rink & hit a camera man during her performance, she went back to check if he and his camera were ok.

    Just a wonderful sportswoman!!

  • THAT'S NOT JUMPING! THAT'S FLYING!

  • @kev7978 true, did you see the heights of that triple axel?

  • @chocoviolin9 I know! She can kick Lysacek or Plushenko's ass anytime.

  • @USAGymnast i agreed with you. i love ito! she made other skaters looked so lousy. Every figure skating fan should know ito.

  • what a flawless program! she should get ALL 6.0s for technical merit!

  • Super Delayed on her 3F! Awesome 3A, OMG!

  • 3.75 rotation!

  • @3m3a3o she can even do a quad axel, with such jumps.

  • No kidding the 1989 Men's Champion Kurt Browning is put to shame by this program.

  • OMG. NO more women in this world can jump higher than Midori anymore. NO MORE. Look at the height of her jump! She could even do a quad with that height of jump!

  • Her skating gives me so much joy, I miss her.

  • She was incredible in her day. I miss the old scoring system - the new scoring system isn't fun!! I would try and guess the technical merit and artistic impression scores back in them days.

  • did you see the height on that 3A?! my gaud!!!

    mao &midori.. 3A is definitely jap! (:

  • Beautiful swan.

  • This could still win medals today! So great.

  • She's the only skater I've seen who gets FASTER with her second triple jump. Amazing.

  • Midori is amazing no matter what. She can even compete against the men.

  • Her 3A is famous. But she is not only that.

    She did all kind of triple jumps, 3Lz, 3F, 3Lo, 3S, 3T and 3A.

And she has a lot of combinations jump variations.

    3T-3T, 2A-3T, 3lz-3T and 3A-3T.

    Her jump is soooo high!

    I like her spin too.

I love Mao Asada, Yuna kim, Irina Slutskaya, etc.

    But Midori is the best!!!

  • That must be the best triple toe/triple toe combination I've ever seen in terms of the height, speed, ice covered and flow. Just unreal.

  • at 2:45, is it Ina Bauar?

  • spiral sequence, not an Ina Bauer.

  • yes, it looks Bauer position.

i pointed out an Ina Bauer position during the spiral sequence.

  • 1:23 Just wonderful ...

  • Comment removed

  • how can watching this not make you feel good inside? seriously?

  • And they say she didn't have "artistic" style please... her technique flawless her style all her own, she owned this!!! Best free skate ever up there with Nadia Bruce and Lance

  • I mean, look at this list of jumps: it could have won the gold at worlds and olympics for the next 20 years. She's like the Mozart of jumping:

    Triple lutz

    triple axle

    triple flip

    triple loop

    triple toe-triple toe

    triple salchow

    double axle

    DAMN!

  • thank you thank you

  • A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

  • This program is truly unbelievable.. she was SO damn far ahead of the competition, she could have competed, like Hamilton said, and won the male competition that year.

  • FANTASTIC! Best Ladies Free performance of all time. What a star she was. Don't get them like this anymore.
