I worked in humanitarian aid and relief, that gave me a whole new view in what I was working for. They should have declared a state of emergency when the other effected states did and evacuated the people by any means necessary. Katrina, unlike a earthquake, could be detected early. People can be evacuated. Bush could bother to reach the disaster site asap. It wasn't even half as devastating as the China quake.

The earthquake in China was more powerful than Japan's. In China it hit the country's most populated province, while in Japan it was a more remote region. 1,836 died in Katrina. If the US gov was in charge of this quake then millions would've died.

I was in Katrina. I can say it was horrible, not just in New O. but also in Miss. through Florida. Many people died, were displaced, and the U.S government showed the least amount of concern they could muster. It was civilians from other states that helped the most. However, China faces a different catastrophe. The amount of people dead is incredible and overwhelmingly sad. I cannot place blame until the people are safe and on their way to recovery, which will take years to repare emotionally.

one is an earthquake and the other is a hurricane followed by floods. in both situations, the governments failed to prepare the affected erea. IN the US the dykes were not kept up while in sichuan the schools for the poorer folks were unsafe. dooooooohh; the same question to you. why is it that the schools fell, but government buildings and hotels didn:t. because the government in sichuan used the money for fixing the unsafe schools for their own benefit. china could have prevented many of the deaths of those children but they didn:t. that is not true, in fact, in the US the flooding was a foreseen scenario and many people warned against levees failure and that they need to be strengthened..that was not done and katrina happened. as for an earthquake it just happened and the magnitude was so strong it took down structurally strong steel and concrete buildings and you are saying schools were unsafe, nothing could withstand that magnitude

In terms of relationship between nation, i would say, all nations will just go for interest. With the same interest, two gov can be friends at one time, but when they have conflict of interest, they become enemy. Eg. USA and Japan in WII and now. I worked in humanitarian aid and relief, that gave me a whole new view in what I was working for. Absolutely ridiculous the red tape, helicopters, pallets, food/water were not dropped, we train everyday for precise drops, govt failure right here.

Most of the blame for the human suffering in LA during Katrina is squarely with the local and state officials. They should have declared a state of emergency when the other effected states did and evacuated the people by any means necessary. But no, they waited until it was got just about as bad as it could have possibly gotten. The 14 year old kid who stole the school bus and drove it full of people to TX had more sense then all the state and local officials combined. He got it.

I was in Katrina. I can say it was horrible, not just in New O. but also in Miss. through Florida. Many people died, were displaced, and the U.S government showed the least amount of concern they could muster. It was civilians from other states that helped the most. However, China faces a different catastrophe. The amount of people dead is incredible and overwhelmingly sad. I cannot place blame until the people are safe and on their way to recovery, which will take years to repare emotionally.

one is an earthquake and the other is a hurricane followed by floods. in both situations, the governments failed to prepare the affected erea. IN the US the dykes were not kept up while in sichuan the schools for the poorer folks were unsafe. In my opinion, the US and china failed their people. china responded quicker is after the fact that many people already died due to failed policies and corruption. both chinese and americans need to wake up.

that is not true, in fact, in the US the flooding was a foreseen scenario and many people warned against levees failure and that they need to be strengthened..that was not done and katrina happened. as for an earthquake it just happened and the magnitude was so strong it took down structurally strong steel and concrete buildings and you are saying schools were unsafe, nothing could withstand that magnitude

As a 4th generation Chinese American I will have to say that the efforts by the Communist Chinese Government and the people of China have impressed me a very much in dealing with this type of calamity. The US Government should be ashamed of itself in how they handled hurricane Katrina. Communism? or a Free Democracy?? There ain't nothing free about having the tax payers pay for a 3 Trillion dollar war in Iraq & $4.00 a gallon of gas in this country!

No, it was China's ILLEGAL manipulation of its currency that created the trade deficit - keeping your currency artificially low so manufacturers would rush there to do business. Currency manipulation is ILLEGAL under WTO rules and international law. We don't believe your lies any more about "it's our fault".
I's $200 billion a YEAR since 1997 - over $2 TRILLION. The war has nothing to do with it. Funny how in 1997-1998, before trade with China, we had a surplus and could afford any war.

Oh so I guess if China decided to raise the value of their currency that would make things fine and dandy here in the US. Wouldn't that make consumer goods that you and I both enjoy a relatively affordable prices all of a sudden be not so affordable anymore? Yes, it would make everything fine and dandy. When will losers like you wake up? The millions of jobs created by producing things in the USA - no matter how expensive they are - would far offset the increased cost of the products. Cheap products are worthless if everyone is unemployed and has no money to buy them. Ask yourself why, before we started trading with China, most Americans had more than enough money and could buy anything they wanted. I would submit Americans were better off before.

Well the way the devaluation of the dollar has been going I'm sure it will eventually be cost effective to manufacture once again in the US, but it's going to hard to compete against Chinese labor at about $3.00USD per worker per day. The reason why Americans were supposedly doing "so well" is that they were using their credit cards and their houses like ATM machines. Now that theres a credit crunch and the housing market is down....guess what? No more ATM's!

About 20 years ago I told a business partner of mine that the US shouldn't be so critical on China being such a closed society. One day if China decides to open their doors it will create a vacuum since there are 1.3 billion Chinese willing to work hard for a better life.

The reason why Chinese have been in America for over 160 years now is that American businesses hired Chinese laborers to build the US railroad system and to work gold mines. Why is this you may ask? The Chinese only manufacture the Motherboard, Computer Case, Video card, Speakers, HHD, Keyboard, Mouse, Monitor, and Router that you're using to communicate back to me with that's all. What about the software? Why isn't the software made in China? I'm not talking about printing and production, I'm talking about writing the software. Why is it still made in America? It's because it requires creativity and you can only produce things that western companies can teach you how to do. For 20 years before you were born, all computers were made in USA. Only because you manipulate your currency did we move there and TEACH you how to do the manufacturing. You got it from us.

Although I agree to that remember that US public only donate to China. I see US gov/Pres not donating so they are to blamed. Hopefully the new president will do something. I heard they will try to improved relation. I dont know why its hard for bush to decreased more problem. In terms of relationship between nation, i would say, all nations will just go for interest. With the same interest, two gov can be friends at one time, but when they have conflict of interest, they become enemy. Eg. USA and Japan in WII and now. USA and Iraq, USA supported Iraq at the Iran-Iraq war, once interest change, their relationship changed as well. I would say, raising of China has threathen USA's interest in Asia Pacific, thus, China and USA be friend is unlikely.

Well USA tried to be Iraq's friends because Iraq was fighting insane muslims in Iran. So we funded them and gave them weapons but then Saddam decided to use the weapons on the Kurds instead and so now we are cleaning up the mess he made in Iraq.
USA has never harmed China - you are just jealous of us and jealous that we are #1 and China's culture did not dominate the world. In fact, we saved you from the Japanese in WWII but now you are ungrateful. That is why God sent an earthquake.

U did, just u guys did not remember, when China was very weak abt 100 yrs ago, the western countries invaded China to force the royal family to open up its ports for trading and sign some unfair treaty, like Hong Kong and Macau was under foreign occupation for 100 yrs. Now, China has learned the lesson, it will continue to boost its military expenses to ensure this will never happen again.

U can choose not to buy, no one force u to. Just because China's good is cheap, if u don't want to buy, even the good cost only a dime, u also won't buy. u r a democratic country, u can elect a gov, who promise to stop all China's good into USA, then u will stop the deficit from China, but then increase in other country. U can try this solution. The problem now is if u cut of trade, China will collapse, do u think US can survive, if u can, your gov already done so.

No, we cannot chose not to buy. Almost all products sold in USA are now made in China. How can we choose not to buy? If I need a clock radio, all of them in USA are made in China. I can't avoid buying Chinese products because everything here is made in China. China has deliberately made it this way through economic manipulation. No, I am not interested in causing China to collapse. I am interested in stopping China's unfair trade, currency manipulation (which is illegal under WTO rules), and raping of other countries' economy. Personally, I was a lot better off when all of my goods were made in USA and REAL expensive. I had a good job then, I could afford to buy anything I wanted. Now I can't even afford China's cheap junk. So much for the lie that cheap goods are better for Americans.

China is allowing Yuan to appreciate a *little* in order to appease the U.S. Gov't. But CCP will not allow Yuan to float freely in currency markets AS REQUIRED BY WTO RULES because that would mean th value of the Yuan would shoot way up, making Chinese products more expensive in USA than our own products. CCP can't have that or people will stop buying Chinese products and your trade deficit will end. China is violating WTO rules that it agreed to. How do you explain that?

I am not criticizing for a nation to donate not much money, eg. Singapore, donate USD 200k + food, tents, medical supply. However, Singapore is a small country with only 4 million ppl. USA on the other hand, world biggest economy, spent 700 billion per yr on military expenses, its war spending in Iraq for less than 1 hour is greater than the donation. They use so much money to destroy other ppl country other than saving life. This is what that make me sick.

US broke or not, it depends. Currently US has a largest deficit in the whole world. Every cents it spend from now on, they borrow. But, something very weird is, amercian still spend like they don't need to repay. Their gov spend a huge amount on military (50% of the whole world combined) Which mean, they need 50% of the world military expense to protect a 5% world pop (American) while they still yelling at China, saying China military spending threaten their ass.

Yes we are broke. The gov't is selling off old US Navy ships to India now in order to pay the INTEREST on the national debt. Our gov't has to borrow $ from China which has $1.2 trillion in USD CASH.
