This is a rather embarassing admission to make but the simple fact of the matter is - you play the organ better with your feet than I do with my hands.
Enchanting music, a fine performance and gorgeous acoustics! Mr, Hohman masterfully captures the essential magic of the piece. A wonderfully imaginative video.
Only if people enjoyed their jobs as much as Mr. Hohman enjoys playing the organ - it would make the world a better place to be. :-) Thanks for posting!
He quedado sin palabras!! Buena obra, exelente compositor excelente ejecutor exelente arreglo exelente esenerio, todo perfecto.... entendiendo que el organo es el instrumeto mas dificil de manejar, realmente sin palabras!!!
That is some really serious footwork, right there. Just... wow. I can't even figure out how to play the peddles without falling off the stall... check this guy out!
Also... the way he switches from one hand to the other half way through a chromatic scale to avoid crossing his arms over. Amazing!!
On 1:28 various switches have changed instantly, which radically changed the instrument's tone. But both of his hands are clearly visible, and he didn't touch anything. How did he do that? He pressed some switch with his leg, or someone else did it on the far right, not visible on the video? (the cameras are avoiding this section, probably because there are at least two cameras standing there)
Thanks for writing. The piece was played using 3 general pistons, or "generals." These are engaged with thumb pistons (round white buttons between keyboards) and with toestuds (controls above the pedal area which duplicate the function of some manual thumb pistons). At 1:28 a foot piston was activated, causing the change instantly and "on cue." - FH
Wow! Fantastic! I really enjoyed this. Thank you. I was an OK guitar and piano player as a kid. I discovered my love of the organ about 5 years ago, and I like to look at it as if I'm working with a living being. I enjoy watching real musicians playing the organ, as I hope to one day be able to come close to inspiring people as you do. I'll keep working on it. Thank you.
lol, as i was on the elementary school, we played this on the christmas day (but not on a organ), and a day later there was a film in the TV, there played the same song: nutcracker
Thanks for writing. I live in Indiana USA. Although I have all earned credentials from the Eastman School - Performer's Certificate, MM, DMA, etc. - I have yet to become affiliated as a full time teacher in an institution of higher learning. You can say I'm just waiting for the right offer, which I realize - at this rate - may occur posthumously! My teaching is limited to rare private coaching, occasional masterclasses, and teaching by adjudication at competitions. Best wishes. - FH
It takes daily practice for years gets rid of mistakes, but then the "music" can happen. My hands are considered quite small compared to most organists. While small hands make big reaches more difficult, short fingers are better for scales, because one is less likely to trip over ones fingers; also, smaller fingers allow for a more controlled keyboard articulation. - FH
Thanks for writing. Actually, the scales in the last part of the piece are fast, but they are not really chromatic, just the slightly the less taxing diatonic scales. Nevertheless, there are some days when diatonic scales do seem like chromatic scales. - FH
omg... im speechless... u delivered it in such a beautiful way... emotion, technique, speed n precision... wow... n i tot the pieces i gt fr my piano teacher was hard...ur a real inspiration!!! ^^
i have always been a fan of organs and this is a prime example of not only a beautiful organ, but an exquisite player. If I could only find some good organ music on iTunes...
Awesome! As if two hands playing completely different note patterns aren't enough, the FEET are used also! Wish I had some sort of key instrument in my permanent possession so I could learn the art! =)
Simply superb! This arrangement (along with the fine rendition) puts two fingers firmly up to all those purists who snub organ transcriptions of orchestral works (and there are a few of them). Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!!!
Thanks for this comment of cultural insight. It is not my intent to irritate purists, in fact, I have oft considered myself to be one. As for fingers, I'm glad to let others raise and point. I find that I need all ten of mine for playing! Cheers and thanks! - Fred H
God I used to play the Baritone until I was in college. Playing one line of music is hard enough but playing multiple lines is just inconceivable to me. My left hand would follow my right and my feet would follow whatever my hands were doing...I would just turn into a big mess if I tried playing a piano much less an organ!!
I love everything about this video! The pedling is definitely superb! And I love this adaptation in general! Wonderful pipe organ, and the console has a lot of... character. Job well done!
Also, I believe you have played the organ at Saint Stephen's Pro-Cathedral in Wilkes-Barre? I might be wrong about that... It's an incredible instrument, and Mark is indeed a fine organist!
Wonderful video showing one who has mastered a very difficult instrument. The pipe organ is the king of instruments. Mastering it requires many many hours of study and practice. I did notice that where ever this mighty instrument is located, they have the proper acoustics. I have seen videos where the echo overpowers the whole thing and the voices of the organ become messy and mixed up. This player is excellent and I say to him bravo!
