It is true that MJ got the numbers that allowed him to be great but it was his physical aspect on defense that made him great not the numbers. But for me I would say by far Dennis Rodman is the all time greatest defender. Didn't get the numbers but was the only guy to really shut down positions 1 through 5.

I'd say MJ's benefit from Pippen was he allowed Jordan to be a floater. There are different types of offensive players in the league at the guard position. Guys like Pippen, Kobe, and Artest are man-to-man guys. Jordan was a floater, like KG is now. His impact is in getting to where the ball is going to be and causes chaos that way. Sure there's glory in that, but not everyone can play that style. It takes someone who understands the game to do that, and I'd argue its harder than man-to-man.

anybody who says Jordan is a better defender Pippen should just stop talking...without Pippens defense Jordan (or the Bulls for that matter) would not have as good or dominate...all Jordan did was clean up the weak side defense...Pippen exploited the other teams weaknesses...but as great as a defender Pippen was Rodman was an even better defender and rebounder...so lets conclude that Micheal Jeffery Jordan would not have been "goat" without Scottie Pippen...

Pippen played 17 seasons, 16 FULL seasons. All nba defensive 1st team 8 times, DPOY candidate 7 times, top 5 6 times, top 3 3 times, runner up twice.

@hangtime23ful you can throw all that stats you want, sometimes it politics. Pippen is the more versatile defender.  All you need to do is watch the 91 finals. Jordan couldn't guard Magic in the post. The momentum of the series changed in the Bulls favor when they put Pippen on him. Jordan could guard 3 positions. Pippen 4 and Rodman has guarded all 5 positions. It's tough to determine between Jordan and Pippen cause they worked so well in sync. I agree that Pip did learn from Jordan tho!

@rashb I did watch the 91 finals & maybe U should watch the 91 finals cuz MJ guarded magic most of that series. Pippen started to guard magic in game 2 when MJ got in foul trouble but like i said MJ guarded magic way more then pippen did in that series. Btw the bulls only lost 1 game & it was on a game winner by perkins, the bulls almost swepted the lakers. MJ one time guarded the center guy v.divac i believe in game 3 so MJ can guard more then just 3 positions if he wanted.

I'm just saying Pippen is longer defender and more versatile defender. He covers more ground. His length allows him to block people straight on. Watch Scottie Pippen ultimate defender. In comparison none of todays players can compare defensively to Jordan and Pippen on defense.

When i mentioned that MJ guarded divac i was just sayin that MJ is able to guard a player from any position just that its wasn't his assignment to guard a center or PF player on a consistent basis. I've seen pippen ultimate defender 1 & 2. Yes i know pippen is one of the best perimeter defenders ever, i just think MJ is slightly better on D. Scottie early in his career had nothing! Jordan was still Jordan, and Scottie was riding the pine to Sellers! Scottie quit several times with head aches when facing Detroit why do you think the Bulls lost to Detroit because Scottie wasn't stepping up!

But after that flu game against the Jazz, playing with a bum ankle against the Hornets when they had Larry Johnson and Zo, I had mad respect for Jordan. Jordan was a gamer. DPOY candidate 10 times(the only season he wasn't a candidate in his 11 FULL season with the bulls was his rookie season). top 5 7 times, top 3 3 times, runner up once, & won the award once. @willsmackyoudown jordan a great defender from a guard position. a lot of weakside help and gambles. not as great as a body-up defender. mike likes to swat without keeping possession of the ball. in the latter years of the 90's pippen took over as the true defensive master. longer, stronger, and smarter. jordan could be caught many times taking many gambles while pippen pressured the ball. pippen was a full-court defender which no one so far in nba history has duplicated. if rondo was...

what are you smoking. Scottie could never lead the league in scoring at any time and when MJ was gone he averaged the same amount of PPG as when Jordan was with him. Scotties performances dropped off in the playoffs statistically while MJs rose. Scottie at certain times in their career was a better defensive player. But in MJs younger years it was not even close. Scottie could just guard bigger guys making him more flexible, MJ was the king of help defense and pick pocketing
