I was reading the comments and I felt like a should write a comment. I am a doctor and I have treated a lot of patients with mental illness and I have myself been depressed. There is no reason to constantly feel miserable if you can get help. Ignore the forums speaking negatively about treatment and doctors, satisfied patients never write.
Fionna gave all of us something. I think that something was herself. This album is so powerfull and so subtle. I sing these songs for no reason they never go away. Thanks fionna it meant alot to alot of people. And thanks for being real its so rare!!
@ozilinish1 You're right, this album will never get old. I was in high school when it came out...I fell in love with her music the first time i heard "Criminal" on the radio. Even though it was about the only song they would actually play on the radio, this whole album ended up being golden.
Thanks to all the concerned patrons of my comment. It was ruff there for a minute, I have sought help, counseling and i am on my way to recovery. Thanks again and GOD bless all of you who cared to keep me uplifted! Your comments and support help keep me alive!
This is another one of those timeless songs, it brings me back to 97' when I was in college, depressed.alone. I'd listen to Tidal everyday on the bus, and calmed me during a period some severe depression & social phobia. Love this song, it paints a picture. I heard Fiona's next album is done, and was supposed to come out last spring, but might come out November can't wait. it's like an old friend returning or something
@Shadowcorporation I am currently a college student, and i am depressed as well..how di you get over it? And how did you overcome school? I have poor concentration, and i cant really retain much. When i read your comment, i feel like that is me right now
@jonasheart09 I don't think you ever really get over it. you cope better over time..some put on a smiley face, never deal with it, & become more miserable. I dealt with it by expressing/recording my feelings. writing. recording music. art. short films. I recall a quote from someone who said "depression is a discovery process" that really stuck with me. Creating music and art gave me a confidence I didn't have at the worst times..it kept me from sinking, & still does to this day.
@Shadowcorporation I got through hardship. coming from one country to another with a single parent. It was very, very hard not having much of any support. That's when you hit the guitar brother, you write songs. you forget about everything else, and do what you love. They may hate you for it, but that's because they have one thing they can't touch, that you can. Never forget that.
yes, agree, she is and was soo underrated, never understood y she didn't get the recognition she deserves. Typically, really music listeners like we all that love her understand she has a true appreciation from her music fans
One of the most peaceful moments I can remember in my life was taking a long road trip with my wife, listening to this album. My wife took over the wheel so I could get some sleep, and as I started to become drowsy, this song came on.
I remember as I was drifting off to sleep, the last thing I heard was Fiona's serene voice singing, "I'm singing him to sleep." I wish I could fall asleep to Fiona Apple's voice and those lyrics every night.
@kruks This is one of the most beautiful YouTube comments I've ever read. I love the way that really incredible music has the ability to freeze experiences or particular moments in time. @solariis888 Are you joking? Her features don't look the slightest bit celtic or Irish - and I am Irish, so I should know. Irish girls don't usually have such full lips, and the classic irish face-shape is way, way different. Sorry, but you seem to be talking out of somewhere other than your head.
@solariis888 Seriously, you're getting worse and worse. Irish Gaelic is one of the many branches of an original CELTIC language, along with Welsh, Cornish, Manx, Breton and Scots Gaelic. Fiona is not an "ancient" name of anything, since it was first used about three hundred years ago. It probably comes from the Irish Gaelic word "fionn" meaning pale or fair. Do your research before you pretend to know about our history or culture.
@CrownedWithLaurels NO YOU STUPID FUCK... THE GAELS ARE NOT A SUBSET YOU STUPID FUCKIN IDIOT. THEY ANCIENT IRISH CAME FROM THE TUATHA DE DANNAN AND THE SONS OF MIL... HAVE YOUR READ THE BOOK OF LEINSTER OR RESEARCHED IT AT ALL? NO YOU STUPID ENGLISH G-MAN OF A PIG...
@solariis888 Jesus, now I know for sure you're either trolling or you've stopped taking your pills. The Tuatha De Danann were a mythological people. And even if they weren't, Gaeilge is still a Celtic language. It's a well known fact. I'm not sure if you're faking this, or if you really do get this aggressive over youtube comments, but either way, this would take you ten minutes of research to find out. So don't call me English - you're the one who clearly knows nothing about Ireland.
@CrownedWithLaurels You don't know a God damned thing for sure kid... and I'm pretty sure you replied to me to begin with. Gael is not Gaeilge, Gael is the language taught to the trees by the gods of Ireland and for witch the Druids and Elfs took credit. It is the wind and something you can feel but not behold.~ "Annals of the four Masters"
it's ok to talk about culture when talking about music because it does matter because all music comes from a source or multiple ones. a white person may take inspiration from soul music or music with african or latin or asian influences...or a black or latin or asian person may take inspiration from european influenced music ..like celtic or folk music like blue grass and stuff. but for musicians there is nothing wrong with giving credit where credit is due...which by the way ..
@applemoon237 ideally..should go for black musicians too ..if they find they are creating fusions of soul or some kind of culturally "black" music with twists of ..whatever..grunge...celtic..but everyone should be proud where they get their inspiration ..not fighting about what it means when someone "sounds black' or "sounds white" and is not what people expect. It's a compliment if someone says a person has african features in face or musical..sounds..I mean could be an insult just as any..
@applemoon237 thing could be if they mean it like sounding or seeming like someone who is not very talented or beautiful but..could just as easily be a great compliment. what do you guys care?..I bet Fiona thinks it's the coolest thing ever..Not for you to say. All music is enhanced backwards forwards and all ways sideways..by collaboration and melding..and conversely by ..once again...going back to a more..singular true form of diff cultures..but not by judging or watering it down.
She's a real composer, she could write a symphony. But the vocal needs to be raised up a bit, so we can hear the lyrics clearly, too much going on, too muddy, she is in danger of losing the song for the arrangement (which is excelent, but mixing is an art)

you're all weird. and racist in any possible direction. who the heck cares if yu're white, black, red, yellow or green and what u think about something? beauty has no color, ugly has no color. grow up and judge things without throwing your cultural heritage on the table. if u can do that you'll be a better person. This song really puts me in the zone i can just float away...the piano, the lyrics, everything...and your right, you can't continue to pigeonhole yourself to a certain genre i'm so glad i found fiona; its a shame people are really missing out on some good music...
@RandomNPC15 My sisters aren't racist they were just a little closed minded about certain types of music they have since embraced all kinds of music I mean hey Lisztomania is my sister's ringtone people can change.
@RandomNPC15 I don't believe my sisters are racist they were just a little closed minded about certain types of music they have since embraced different genres I mean hey Litzomania is my sisters new ringtone. So yeah
@toymack78 why do African American people only listen to one kind of music? That would get so boring, I think. I'm asian and we are not like that either. haha, I just think its funny, no big deal though.
@GothamCityGal Some people see an attractive person or a person that they think is attractive and say oh that person must be exotic or Indian or mixed with one thing or another. A white person does not need to like anything at all like any other race or ethnicity in order to be extremely attractive to other people okay. Well maybe in your opinion they do, but that's not the opinion of the whole world. You want to refuse to believe that a person can look white and be attractive and it's bs.
He didn't say anyone had to look like a certain race to be attractive or that attractiveness was exclusive to one race. He just said she looked exotic. And she does look exotic. I think Faith Hill is attractive and beautiful, ravishing even, in fact most people do, however I wouldn't describe her as exotic and most people probably wouldn’t either. You're making a deal out of nothing and need to tone down the sensitivity.
@GothamCityGal no matter what you look like no matter what your race is chances are there is people who will think you are attractive. And there is people that look all white, all black, all indian, all asian, all arab, mixed etc. (all races) that are considered to be extremely attractive by other people. Nobody needs to look like any certain race (exotic lol) in order to be attractive
@xanadeux we all have blood,we're humans. To me it doesnt matter what color your are. Our warped society tells us to hate eachother. I love all music and everyone. BTW anyone listening to this and feels the same way should check out a group called "The Beatles"..... :)
@xanadeux oh she can sing she must be part black is that what you think? that's total bs I am a singer songwriter and I will tell you now I've listened to a lot of music and met a lot of musicians from all genres of music and whether some one can sing or not has absolutely nothing to do with their race. I have heard amazing voices from people of all races
@mzvengeance1 No I meant she looks like she has african features (like facial structure)..just my personal opinion. By the way, props for liking ms vengeance.
Lay off of people. He's just saying that she looks like she has African features and you start swearing like an ignoramus and acting defensive. Her facial structure, now that someone's pointed it out, reminds me of Ethiopians. There's nothing wrong with making an observation. He didn't even mention that she must be part black because she can sing. What is wrong with you?
@toymack78 thats one of the coolest things I've ever heard. Also if I may add, Music has every color in the rainbow and more. Some Music has no color at all. Music is Music period, and meant to be enjoyed. Tell your sisters your color blind.
I've often thought the same thing.....Tidal is a revelation I got this album when it it was released and still curl up and listen to her voice her poetry ...she transcends all the frivolous labels we place on our human form. I love her as an artist simply because she touches your soul.
@toymack78 I totally agree with you. My mom thought she and her music were quite odd. I was in the 3rd grade during this time. Got my sister to buy it for me<3
my favorite song of all time. above anything ever made. the music is...just...ugh, just amazing....I remember when I bought this album in 1997, and my jaw hit the floor when the first 4 chords came out of my stereo. to this day, I'm still spellbound. thanks for posting!
Thank you for posting this. I haven't been able to find my Tidal CD I bought back in 1997 lately. I'd recommend Amy Kuney to anyone who is a big fan of Fiona. Listening to her beautiful voice reminded me of Fiona's talent for singing/songwriting.

@toymack78 why do African American people only listen to one kind of music? That would get so boring, I think. I'm asian and we are not like that either. haha, I just think its funny, no big deal though.

@MyaChrisify i'm african american and i've been into fiona apple since '96 when "Tidal" came out. but at the same i'm quite the oddity/rareity.

not so rare if you're at the right place at the right time. ;-)

@toymack78 Funny, I never saw her as white. Beyond the shade of her skin, her features look mighty exotic, as does her voice...
GothamCityGal 1 year ago
@GothamCityGal Some people see an attractive person or a person that they think is attractive and say oh that person must be exotic or Indian or mixed with one thing or another. A white person does not need to like anything at all like any other race or ethnicity in order to be extremely attractive to other people okay. Well maybe in your opinion they do, but that's not the opinion of the whole world. You want to refuse to believe that a person can look white and be attractive and it's bs.

@mzvengeance1

@toymack78 not to mention the fact the she seriously looks like she's got some african blood in there somewhere. Not that it matters, but she does!
xanadeux 1 year ago
@xanadeux we all have blood,we're humans. To me it doesnt matter what color your are. Our warped society tells us to hate eachother. I love all music and everyone. BTW anyone listening to this and feels the same way should check out a group called "The Beatles"..... :)
hiphopguru81 1 year ago
@xanadeux oh she can sing she must be part black is that what you think? that's total bs I am a singer songwriter and I will tell you now I've listened to a lot of music and met a lot of musicians from all genres of music and whether some one can sing or not has absolutely nothing to do with their race. I have heard amazing voices from people of all races
mzvengeance1 9 months ago
@mzvengeance1 No I meant she looks like she has african features (like facial structure)..just my personal opinion. By the way, props for liking ms vengeance.

@mzvengeance1

Teka1979 1 year ago
@toymack78 I totally agree with you. My mom thought she and her music were quite odd. I was in the 3rd grade during this time. Got my sister to buy it for me<3

Thank you for posting this. I haven't been able to find my Tidal CD I bought back in 1997 lately. I'd recommend Amy Kuney to anyone who is a big fan of Fiona. Listening to her beautiful voice reminded me of Fiona's talent for singing/songwriting.
