I can say I'm tired of hearing rap verses that are mediocre, and similar to other rappers, but hip hop has always had copy cats. From beats, to hooks, to styles, to verses, to whole songs. As far as NWA, they could hardly finish a verse without cursing. Try teaching kids about rap with that. People like Big Daddy Kane, and L.L., then Cris Cross, paving the way. That was an era all to itself. In the late 80's early nineties rap was still young. It began to pick up a younger generation. It had always been a form of expression. I wouldn't call it dead. It has changed only because it is bigger, with southern rappers expressing their way. Out with the old, and in with the new.

Back in their day there was a crack problem, gang war, rodney king, Black Panthers became the Crips and Bloods. There was plenty of "positive messages" but nothing changed in LA, and that is what led to the populary of the NWA: street anger, which I think was important for the hip hop world. Eventually it evolved to street + knowledge, but the NWA were the pioneers.
