Choke, Throttle & Governor Linkage Configuration on Briggs & Stratton 4-5Hp Engines

What's the safest way to remove the cast iron 90 deg. elbow from the exhaust port on the 5 hp L-head? I want to install a bolt on low tone muffler.

my triller works only if i put small amounts of gas in the carburetor after it burns that gas it shuts off.so i took the carburetor and gas tank apart and cleaned it really good and nothing same problem. i really think its not sucking gas. how can i fix this problem? thank you very much for your help.

I have the same exact motor from a friend and had to replace the exhaust valve. I took the whole carb of and cleaned it and gas tank. It runs fine on some blocks, but when you try to run it on ground it buags down and goes like two mph. I think the problem is nothing is hooked up to the governor. I just needed some professional advice on how to fix it. I can post a video of it you need me to.

where did you get the new fuel tank? and did it come with the throttle system underneath it as I need to replace both...

@MazaratiRacingTeam got the tank from a local briggs dealer and it comes with part of the throttle mechanism

donyboy, firstly thank you very much for the info. Best vid on this motor I've seen. I have the same setup on a generator recently rehomed to me.. Replaced pulsa-jet and tank, however, having problems getting governor to recognize a load. I have set the idle speed screw to 3600 rpm per spec. 110vac ouput is perfect, but won't recognize a load. additionally I don't have a throttle cable. ? Not enough governor tension? Any help would be appreciated.

can i put a bowl type carburetor on that kind of engine with that type of carburetor on because i cant find out y it is leaking gas

hey dony I have the same engine and it keeps leaking gas from the gasket that gos on the gas tank I replaced it twice and I still have the problem can you help

Nice video! I actually just picked one up the other day for free and is now having one heck of a time getting it to run. Fixed head gasket leak, cleaned carb, replace a lot of the seals, but it's still giving me one heck of a run around. Looking over the linkages, mine is missing the linkages you pointed at 1:27. She will idle beautifully...but die when given gas...I think the carb is clogged due to the rusted fuel tank and is starving the engine? Screws connecting carb to engine is a PITA.

In Omaha you can go to a place called Harbor Freight and buy a 5.5 hp with a 2 year warranty for 136.00 here we got a old motor with a 100 dollar tank plus labor . Why would you go this route?

@blueticecho because this engine has two shafts on it, one for reverse and the other for forward, and since it it a briggs it is worth fixing

Nice explanation of all the linkages. Also, good to point out the need to check for proper operation after finishing everything. Same thing in flying: "all controls free and correct".

Well I got my power back sunday the septic tank and propane tank washed away we have begun cleaning out the basement and the road still has 1 lane in each direction ,Now we are to get 2 3 inches of rain to day I picked up a 1/2 horsezogler pump at a yard sale it was still in the box runs and pumps much better now as long as I have gen or electric power basement wont flood.

Where and how much did the tank cost?

That is a very popular motor and bulletproof. I have one on a Troy Bilt tiller, runs like a clock and powers through everything.

the on thing that teumseh does better than briggs is that tecumseh makes their linkages much simpler

Why don't most snowblower engines have air filters? My Craftsman with a 7 horse Tecumseh came stock without one, no fittings or nothing, just open carb.
