Next questions if ya dont mind, The Berger is the biggest huh? I thought that Skagit was the king and B why do you guys have to run er out so far??? Seems like an expensive way harvest fir. If ya have some time please take a minute and fill me in.
@Jdigger4130 Skagit made some great yarders, and I'm sure there are some "custom" yarders that people put together that are taller than the Berger Marc VI. With combined height, drum capacity, and power, I believe the Marc VI was the largest production model ever made. Yes, this job was expensive. The unit isolated by two canyons w/ no road access. The flat terrain made conventional logging of the unit impossible. 3 Cats fed wood across the flats to the skyline. Helicopter was more expensive
You guys a savages!!!! How come ya held er up so long? Seems like it was basically set down where he had it suspended for some time. I am not a logger or operator so i have no idea what the yarder engineer has to asses. Please explain. Thanks
@Jdigger4130 It ran out of fuel just before they hooked it up and they needed to set it down close enough to the road so that they could re-fuel. The breaks on the yarder were a bit wet too, and the engineer was trying to set it down gently. They still had two more Cats to haul across the canyon, and leaving this one in place with no fuel in it would have prevented them from landing the other two in the same spot.
@Que0s2 Sparmatic.... Made by Vancouver Iron and Engineering Works... (VIEW), designed by the famous Frank Lawrence, same guy that invented the Gearmatic. Good, strong machine, but they had nowhere near the reach of the Berger in this video.
@mstaff657 All three of the Cats were yarded across the canyon with minimal fuel on board. This makes them lighter, and it also means that less fuel is spilled if there is an accident and a machine ends up in the canyon (or creek) Fortunately here, we had a smart logger who did the job the right way, and all was accomplished safely.
i worked for that company Dahlgren log out of Forks WA and yes two were only made and they own both they also have a few mark IV pretty much the same but smaller and 8 guy lines
Yes, It is a Berger Marc VI. See comments below. We had a large flat across the canyon that did not allow enough lift for conventional yarding, so the Cats were yarded across the canyon to skid the wood in under the skyline.
Berger Marc VI, 110 foot tube. My understanidng is it is the largest production model yarder ever made (only two were ever made?). 4 D8Cats and a D9 were used as guyline "stumps" because nobody thought the second-growth stumps would hold. Tailhold was an 8 ft. Douglas fir old-growth stump.
