Actually, it does make sense. If the pegasus and unicorn were from an older generation, but THEY had another generation with two regular ponies, and then THEY went with regular ponies also, all Mr. and Mrs. cake had to do was give their children the recessive pegasus and unicorn genes.

...So because HIS great great grandfather was a unicorn, Mrs. Cake would have to have a recessive gene as well...but then being a land pony...they can't give the recessive pegasus gene...IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE
