George Best was my idol when I was 16 years old. Even moving to another country I never forgot his fantastic skill, and put Norhtern Ireland on the map. Perfect song by Brian Kennedy. He not only had talent....he was sooo handsome! Every girls dream man!!!!
So sad fame can be one's demise...Thank you George for cheering are everday lives, and may your God be with you.....never forgotten by another Belfast born
how fucking dare you that man was a legend to all of us in northern ireland and the republic and the worlds best football player manchester is lost without him
Maradonna was the greatest ever, i dont recall Best going to an unfashionable Italian club and overthrowing the might of Milan and Juve, also can anyone name any other member of the Argentina's 1986 winning world cup final team?? Course not, cos they were a one man team at a time when the World cup mattered.
I don't recall Maradonna going to United and becoming argubly greatest player that ever played for them. Can you name another player who was in that Northern Ireland team? NO, Because again they were a one man team. Maradonna scored 1 great goal and that was his trademark goal which made him a contender for the greatest player ever otherwise best scored a countless amount of great goal, pace, quick feet, heading, finishing PERFECT he was George "Best"
@Jpafc10 George was unforgetable, but its impossible to say who was best I was fortunate to see some of the very best Cruff, Pele, Maradona, Best and Eusebio were the most outstanding players I ever saw.But we shouldn't forget Vinnie Jones or John Fashenu either.
@Jpafc10 Pat Jennings(arsenal, spurs)Pat Rice (arsenal) Jimmy Nichol (man utd)Brian Hamilton (everton)Terry Neil (arsenal)& one the best centre forwards in english football at the time Derek Dougan ( wolves), all were regulars during Georges time, they were not a pub team! But I still remain a George Best fanatic, who also cried buckets the night he died
@IrishMartin Jealous he was from the North ? He finished playing at the top at 26 yet thirty years later the world wept when he died. A true genius. RIP Georgie Boy
I was an 8 year old kid when my Dad got me into meet the NI team the night before the game with Russia at a hotel in Donaghadee NI.... not sure wot year maybe bout 69 70 and I spent the whole evening with Besty and all the rest, especially Pat Jennings what a fantastic guy!!! God Bless
GEORGIE ALWAYS WANTED AN ALL-IRELAND SOCCER TEAM. HE KNEW WE, AS AN ISLAND, COULD WIN THE WORLD CUP. AND WE NEARLY DID, THANKS TO A GEORDIE GENTLEMAN KNOWN AS SAINT JACK CHARLTON!! WE HAVE AN ALL-
IRELAND RUGBY TEAM. NOW, COME ON, IN MEMORY OF GEORGE, LET'S GET TOGETHER .... AND W IN! WE'LL KNOCK THE SHITE OUT OF THE OTHERS!!
Stupid stupid man, The absolute best footballer ever to live yet the sauce was more important to him, don't worry, I was there I made the conscious effort to look around, to see the uselessness of drink. It doesn't take much, only have to want to.
Far too many are coddled into continuing. All men have the ability to control themselves, but it takes a will.
Watched the whole Funeral on Skynews but the part that made me cry was watching Calum and the likes of Dennis Law carrying his casket while the bagpipes played loudly... that was really touching.. RIP Georgie, I never saw you play but you were "Simply the Best"
@ChapterVIII09 They are not the bagpipes, but the Irish Uileann Pipes. Check out Davey Spillane on You Tube, to get a closer look. They are played with belows under the arm, not blown into. RIP George.
Brian sings this song so well, my favourite, and hearing his sing it at George Best Funeral - still cry at the thought, a fantastic singer and a fantastic Man believe me..
I was working on a land survey in South Wales. The sad inevitable news was something I had spent the last day unable to comprehend. The last time a real hero of mine had died it was John Lennon but even he was someone in the shadow of George Best. George Best was my first hero as a kid and stood there leaps and bounds above even the great Mohammed Ali. I went to the funeral in Belfast booking my flight before I even knew the date. This great song and its significance chills me even to this day.
I was working on a land survey in South Wales. The sad inevitable news was something I had spent the last day unable to comprehend. The last time a real hero of mine had died it was John Lennon but even he was someone in the shadow of George Bbest. George Best was my first hero as a kid and stood there leaps and bounds above even the great Mohammed Ali. I went to the funeral in Belfast booking my flight before I even knew the date. This great song and its significance chills me even to this day.
I'm from Belfast, a Manchester United and Northern Ireland supporter. I stood outside Stormont in freezing cold and rainy weather to be there and pay my respects at George's funeral. I very rarely see my father cry, but he cried that day because his idol died. I cried also, it was very emotional. This song is very meaningful to me, not just because of George, but because it was played at my cousin's funeral too, he killed himself nearly 2 years ago aged just 26 and he loved this song.
Pele or Maradonna could never match up to Georgie. For God's sakes look at the Brazil and Argentina squad Pele and 'Donna had round them and compare them to the NI team of back then. Best really was phenomenal, a genius on the ball and revolutionary for his time. To think he was just a skinny lad on Belfast and went on to become the greatest footballer to ever live. United should have retired the no 7 jersey the day George left.
Just to confirm your suspicions George Best did in fact wear the number 5 on many occasions but it was in a 5 a side match !! Kind regards from a big fan of Bestie in South Wales.
@darkshadower790 you have absolutely no respect to post shit about football upon watching a father and husbands funeral you stupid little cunt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@hawit8390 You are an absolute moron and I feel sorry for anyone who ever has to come into contact with you in any way. I'm not going to respond, or even read your next post as I expect it to be as idiotic and ridiculous as your first.
Thank you for taking the time to respond even though your opinion, which is rightfully your's to share, is wrong and a poor attempt to anger or hurt someone.
@darkshadower790 I'm from the land of Pelé and some other football players.
I think there can be some dispute about the technical merits of any player, but i truly agree with you about the importance of Best for your country, and your country's team.
He certainly deserves such a beautiful song, excelently interpreted by Mr Kennady.
