@abhudson14 I wouldn't buy the Daily Mirror again. The rubbish you read in that thing is mind boggling. I remember reading it during the election campaigns, and the closest they ever got to giving readers a genuine reason to NOT vote Tory was some bloke in a chicken suit bursting in on a Tory MP as he ate his breakfast.
@MasterlyApprentice the daily mirror quaity paper and ive load of reason why i will never vote tory the main one is i care about this country and i want to do whats besr for this country
@MasterlyApprentice Very interesting to read this. I live in the U.S.A. and sadly we have the same issue. All the left -wing bias. The papers all all full of it. Most people are just not intelligent enough to look beyond the very obvious junk and are afraid of being "out of the mainstream" by questioning the silly left-wing junk
I am a humble uneducated Japanese and I am currently reading the book she wrote - the Downing Street Years - which came out many, many years ago.
I agree that she would have been tempted to give the story from her own perspective and to defend her ways, but the book still contains many facts.
Britain indeed have problems. Those she inherited, she did not create. What would have happened if she did not take them on board? All her successors owe great deal to her.
Thatcher displayed a side of femininity which is rarely seen in modern media. As such, she doesn't conform to the feminine sterotype. However, she did demonstrate a type of womanhood which still has the power to compete with a male dominated political establishment. This has nothing to do with homosexuality.
Wish this lady could came back to sort out yet another Labour mess, ironically very much like the 70's. Strikes, possible power cuts and the country in a shit load of Debt.
The only people who hate Thatcher are the lazy, the idle or those who dont understand how an economy works
I'm American and it seems like the US in the 70s was in the same sort of "Labor Party" trouble like Britain was in the 70s and Ronald Reagan turned the country around the exact same way Thatcher did. Now I hear Britain is becoming socialist again under Blair and Brown, and even the United States is becoming socialist under Obama. Get it through your heads - socialism doesn't work...ever!
@chapmasi Damn right! The old labour party are bone idle idiots, the New Labour party were borderline fascists and bone idle idiots. The best Primeminister we ever had!
@chapmasi Well said. I love your comment. It is the only sensible comment I have ever seen on a Thatcher clip. You are so right. Most people do not see the whole picture. All they can do is ask for handouts . The freedom to work and earn is a lot more powerful than the little handouts that make us weaker.
I remember one of the 'Mac' cartoons in The Daily Mail in 2007 when Brown was inviting her to Downing Street and the headlines were also buzzing with news of an 'Eternal Youth Pill'. It portrayed Thatcher bursting into number 10, announcing she was on the new Eternal Youth medication and that Brown should pack his bags. If only it were true!
Catholicism777- In answer to your question. The two main things that brought her down were her views on Europe, In my opinion which were correct, but she was very anti Europe compared to Geoffrey Howe and Nigel Lawson. Which made her relationship with them very bad. She also backed the "poll tax"- a new way of getting council tax, where everyone over the age of 18, property owning or not would have to pay a fixed rate for their serives, poorer people would get a discount.
thather herself i will admit was not particularly gay friendly..... but she was not anti gay either..... section 28 was about teaching in schools.... i will acept that thatcher was wrong but she was also of her time..... my main point is that because of thatchers policys if individualism and freedom in the economy the 80s were a great deal better for gay people than any time before..... just one of a few of the things that boomed in her time
Was she wrong to stop the PROMOTION of homosexuality in schools? I hardly see that this is a bad thing. they're getting children to write essays on it now or even imagine themselves as being gay. i see that they may actually, due to the abnormal level of emphasis put upon it, and the forced regard for it as normal that they may falsely believe themselves to be homosexual or even wish to be simply because they think that those in authority who they look up to may want them to be.
she was wrong to stop it all together... look im gay and im not even keen on it being taught in schools. but having said that i dont think it ,matters either.... she made herself look unfriendly to a large section of the population.... that was a mistake.... but i still love her and i still believe in most of her views
she used the wrong word actually, she should have specified, "taught" instead of "promoted" because that would have made her intentions more obvious and promoted is too ambiguous since it does not accomplish much at all since there are too many ways around it. as for being unfriendly, I think this can be taken on different levels, you can be gay friendly in a passive "i don't mind" sort of way. the other way is to take away the freedom to disaprove entirely as Labour have done.
to b honest i dont really think it should b taught to very young children but i also dont care.... thatcher was of an older generation... i can understand where she vwas coming from.... gay people sometimes only remember section 28 and not the fact that mrs thatcher made it easyier for everyone to b a bit more individual.... gays included
Thats a bit dramatic! Schools are for education and not to enforce opinions. I don't believe for one minute that educating someone about an aspect of human life makes them into that very thing. Thats an odd way to look at it. Either your inclined or your not. Inventing social convetions as the norm is hardly helpful when avioding dogmatic ignorance!
My sex and social education under the Conservatives was terrible as teachers ignored it. High STD, teen mothers, bullying and suicide result.
First, whoever said that STD'S were reserved for straight people? There is no evidence that its' transmission is lower in homosexuals, second there is a far higher rate of teen mothers now than under previous governments, third, the reason it was lower was because of the disapprobation of society. Finally, look at the Hitler youth, they were taught to hate a group of people and so they did, whoever said that the opposite is not also possible.
Who said they were reserved for anyone?Plus I never said teen mothers was higher under Conservatives, just that poor education has always had a knock on effect on society. It was bad when I received it and I imagine it still is. Our figures are worse than other, deemed liberal, parts of europe on nearly everything.
I see dogmatic indoctrination and education differently. Refusing to speak or teach on an aspect of real life is avoiding education in favour of a 'policy'.
Plus in reality section 28 was awful because many artists, writers and social reformers were not taught in general because they were homosexual to aviod questions about them and their work so as not to be seen as 'promoting' them. Real ignorant stuff. Classics like E. M Forester, Oscar Wilde and a host of other Poets, Social Reformers and Civil Rights Activists were glossed over. But the governments have no issue promoting religion, 'faith' doctrine and aload of other nonsense.
@mickyh234 do you honestly believe that nonsense?? i actually just laughed out loud when i read your viewpoint.
gay awareness in schools is about acceptance. gay teenagers are the single most likely demographic to commit suicide because of harassment in school. it is important for schools to address this issue and make it clear that gay students are in a difficult position due to their biological sexual orientation.
to think that schools are attempting to teach students to be gay is ludicrous
@mickyh234 but i should also say that i love margaret thatcher.. i don't even know much about her stance on social issues like the one we're discussing, but i have studied her economic policies and think they're very good
Yes thats true what heidegger said she did vote to have homosexuality decriminalised because even though she may have had personal reservations, I am not sure she did really, she was a libertarian at heart as much as she was a conservative. She believed individuals should be free to lead and run their own lives without state sanction as far as possible.
Section 28 was added to the local gov bill in haste by social conservatives. The party had rejected it as a seperate law before this.
The policy referred to here is the Poll Tax - aka The Community Charge. It was a policy which meant everyone payed an equal amount of council tax (used to fund local services and government). It was designed to alleviate the tax burden on home owners who had hitherto been the only individuals that payed council tax, but it was hugely unpopular.
i wish she wasnt so unwell..... if it was up to the tory membership she prob would be made leader again..... could u imagine gordon brown vs margaret thatcher.... would b no contest..... love u maggie
She'd shred him to pieces, boil him, consume the ashes and then compain it was overcooked. Something I would very much enjoy seeing. I agree, it is a pity she is unwell because she was a one off and noone else can do what she could.
BungleZippie: She'd still be better than Gordon "Clunking Fist" Brown or David "Call me Dave" Cameron.....and this is coming from someone who didn't even like Thatcher
thanks, i havent thought of that! (not particularly articulate, but straight to the point ;) )

@chapmasi There was no strikes like there are now in the last labour government!

I love Maggie Thathcher! I wish she was back to sort this mess out. It nearly makes me cry to see Gordon Brown and Labour leading this country.

She also backed the "poll tax"- a new way of getting council tax, where everyone over the age of 18, property owning or not would have to pay a fixed rate for their serives, poorer people would get a discount.
moroseo 2 years ago
@moroseo
If she was so anti-europe then why did she sign the Single European Act? That document ended the supremacy of centuries of Parliamentary democracy.

What did Thatcher do for gay men?
PeteGeeza86 3 years ago
thather herself i will admit was not particularly gay friendly..... but she was not anti gay either..... section 28 was about teaching in schools.... i will acept that thatcher was wrong but she was also of her time..... my main point is that because of thatchers policys if individualism and freedom in the economy the 80s were a great deal better for gay people than any time before..... just one of a few of the things that boomed in her time
thatcheritescot 3 years ago 3
Was she wrong to stop the PROMOTION of homosexuality in schools? I hardly see that this is a bad thing. they're getting children to write essays on it now or even imagine themselves as being gay. i see that they may actually, due to the abnormal level of emphasis put upon it, and the forced regard for it as normal that they may falsely believe themselves to be homosexual or even wish to be simply because they think that those in authority who they look up to may want them to be.
mickyh234 2 years ago 6
she was wrong to stop it all together... look im gay and im not even keen on it being taught in schools. but having said that i dont think it ,matters either.... she made herself look unfriendly to a large section of the population.... that was a mistake.... but i still love her and i still believe in most of her views
thatcheritescot 2 years ago
she used the wrong word actually, she should have specified, "taught" instead of "promoted" because that would have made her intentions more obvious and promoted is too ambiguous since it does not accomplish much at all since there are too many ways around it. as for being unfriendly, I think this can be taken on different levels, you can be gay friendly in a passive "i don't mind" sort of way. the other way is to take away the freedom to disaprove entirely as Labour have done.
mickyh234 2 years ago 3
to b honest i dont really think it should b taught to very young children but i also dont care.... thatcher was of an older generation... i can understand where she vwas coming from.... gay people sometimes only remember section 28 and not the fact that mrs thatcher made it easyier for everyone to b a bit more individual.... gays included
thatcheritescot 2 years ago 2
Thats a bit dramatic! Schools are for education and not to enforce opinions. I don't believe for one minute that educating someone about an aspect of human life makes them into that very thing. Thats an odd way to look at it. Either your inclined or your not. Inventing social convetions as the norm is hardly helpful when avioding dogmatic ignorance!
My sex and social education under the Conservatives was terrible as teachers ignored it. High STD, teen mothers, bullying and suicide result.
BungleZippie 2 years ago
First, whoever said that STD'S were reserved for straight people? There is no evidence that its' transmission is lower in homosexuals, second there is a far higher rate of teen mothers now than under previous governments, third, the reason it was lower was because of the disapprobation of society. Finally, look at the Hitler youth, they were taught to hate a group of people and so they did, whoever said that the opposite is not also possible.
mickyh234 2 years ago
Who said they were reserved for anyone?Plus I never said teen mothers was higher under Conservatives, just that poor education has always had a knock on effect on society. It was bad when I received it and I imagine it still is. Our figures are worse than other, deemed liberal, parts of europe on nearly everything.
I see dogmatic indoctrination and education differently. Refusing to speak or teach on an aspect of real life is avoiding education in favour of a 'policy'.
BungleZippie 2 years ago
Plus in reality section 28 was awful because many artists, writers and social reformers were not taught in general because they were homosexual to aviod questions about them and their work so as not to be seen as 'promoting' them. Real ignorant stuff. Classics like E. M Forester, Oscar Wilde and a host of other Poets, Social Reformers and Civil Rights Activists were glossed over. But the governments have no issue promoting religion, 'faith' doctrine and aload of other nonsense.
BungleZippie 2 years ago
@mickyh234 do you honestly believe that nonsense?? i actually just laughed out loud when i read your viewpoint.
gay awareness in schools is about acceptance. gay teenagers are the single most likely demographic to commit suicide because of harassment in school. it is important for schools to address this issue and make it clear that gay students are in a difficult position due to their biological sexual orientation.
to think that schools are attempting to teach students to be gay is ludicrous
timo6170 2 years ago
@mickyh234 but i should also say that i love margaret thatcher.. i don't even know much about her stance on social issues like the one we're discussing, but i have studied her economic policies and think they're very good
timo6170 2 years ago
Um, supported decriminalisation of gay sex and relationships, while members in both the Labour and Conservative party were opposed to the idea...
heidegger89 2 years ago 3
Gay people before the 70s were mostly arrested so im not sure.. Well if you was caught.

If you were caught
gianniversace08 2 years ago
Yes thats true what heidegger said she did vote to have homosexuality decriminalised because even though she may have had personal reservations, I am not sure she did really, she was a libertarian at heart as much as she was a conservative. She believed individuals should be free to lead and run their own lives without state sanction as far as possible.
Section 28 was added to the local gov bill in haste by social conservatives. The party had rejected it as a seperate law before this.
BungleZippie 2 years ago 2
what was the policy which led to her downfall??? please someone tell me? its like ripping the last page out of a book...
Catholicism777 3 years ago 7
The policy referred to here is the Poll Tax - aka The Community Charge. It was a policy which meant everyone payed an equal amount of council tax (used to fund local services and government). It was designed to alleviate the tax burden on home owners who had hitherto been the only individuals that payed council tax, but it was hugely unpopular.
UnitedBritannia 3 years ago
ooooo ouch. bad choice after lettin so many people buy their council homes. well thank looooads for telling me ur a legend.
Catholicism777 3 years ago
@UnitedBritannia It is interesting though that the community charge is a far fairer policy than council tax because everyone contributes.
