so many times i saw this vid, each time of it i stunned for its beauty harmonic sound...is it could be happen you and tiesto team up?? ow that gonna be great...
It seems like with hang drums you cant ever play the same thing twice. That's what makes them so interesting, every time you play it, its something new but always sounds good.
If it's anything like steel pans then no. Again like it's cousin the Steel Drum from Trinidad, the hang drum has sweet spots, in which a fuller warmer sound is produced when struck. However if there is any shift in playing away from the sweet stops a less desired, thin, more metallic sound will occur. But pretty much the same pitch, the only diffence would be the amount of harmonics produced.
It is 'like' a steel pan, but the tuning approach is different with an octave and a 5th built into each 'tone field'. So there is (especially with the newer models) indeed a variance in sound depending on where in the 'tone field' one strikes the Hang. A great example of extracting the overtones is in a YouTube video by Dante Bucci playing Hang called 'Fanfare'. At one point he dampens and strikes the tone fields in such a way as to really bring out the high overtones.
its so funny that people think there will be forever this one magical place,in a land far away. only a few will ever get one of these in a life time, and if they do it will cost so much money .get off the pipe!!!!like with any music instrument like drums or the guitar the people will have many places to choose from. like the usa ,pantheon steel drums.i have a friend in Iraq getting some made by a well known company that makes cymbals for drums .hell ,i might drop one off in china.
The problem is Hang Drums are nowhere near as popular as drums or guitar and as such have very few suppliers outside of PanArt. It is very difficult to obtain one of these outside of Europe for a reasonable amount of money. In order to buy a Hang Drum from PanArt you have to fly up to Switzerland and have one custom made and just the flight up there from North America is over five hundred. That's not even mentioning the actual price of the instrument.
I like the "snare-like" snaps/slaps towards the end....reminiscent of Andy Mckee's rhythm style on the guitar....good stuff....I play djembe myself and would love to get one of these...but apparently you need to sell your first born to get one...any suggestions?

There are more scales to play in on the single hang, it's all in how it's held and struck. But also if there was an electronic version of it, every moron who could, would come up with crap to spew from it. That's why the selection process to actually purchase a hang is so rigorous - its so not every twit out there can get one. I for one am quite happy that only someone with actual talent is able to obtain one of these from the creators.

oh, i see, the ONE you saw that SUPPOSEDLY sold for 10k has made you think theyr ALL like that.. well mr geeenius the one i listed didnt even sell at 800euro[biddings over]. so what if it wasnt in amerikkka. stop yappin and go hit some instruments.. it will make you feel better . . moron just like your prez, go eat a mcdonalds burger and choke on it
sorry not everyone speaks italian jackass, why would I bid on it. and yes they have sold for that price believe it or not. I dont like my president call him whatever you want I didnt vote for him and I dont eat mcdonalds. Maybe you should stop stereotyping, its against the hippie nature.
It is easy to generalize on most topics (< generalization), including music. I left a comment on your video, Mutlunatic.
Sid, please pardon my saying, but perhaps until you've actually seen every hang video on youtube you should refrain from making such broad and inflammatory generalizations. It can only serve to make people angry, and clog up comment areas with needless arguing.
What an amazing instument. I never even knew the Hang Drum exsisted, until earlier today. And now I find out there are even Hang Drum Snobs. Wow, where have I been. By the way, music is emotion and feeling expressed through sound. Not dots and lines on a page. Great Video.
Personally, Proto, I don't believe you need formal knowledge. True, many of the greats did, but what about the people who are great at winging it, or playing by ear? For example, I have a friend who creates beautiful piano pieces, but can't write sheet music at all; even reading it is difficult. This doesn't diminish her ability as a musician, just puts her in a slightly different category than formally taught musicians.
Manu's composition here is truly beautiful, though, no arguing that.
This is true some ppl are naturally gifted I wont argue against that. But this is an extremely rare thing and even still it will make them better musicians if they understood the language of music.
i totally agree with prototype. this is the only piece on youtube that actually incorporates any sense of melody into what is really a percussive instrument. this is really good, the others on here are cringeworthy.
No doubt Manu is the best I've seen so far on the Hang, but I think you judged too quickly when you saw my vids. /watch?v=M7wOOGJcSu0 --this is "cringeworhty", seriously?
Finally somebody who knows how to use a hand drum with some melody, RESPECT. Those hippies were making me angry, taking all the beutifull instruments away from real musicians.
anyone can buy an instrument.. just look at all the kids murdering 'stairway to heaven' on their first guitar.. everyone has to start somewhere, and guess what? THEY saw it before you did, and THEY made a video.. if your angry about that then your likely angry about a lot of things. go outside and take a breath of fresh air
If Mozarts piano ended up in the hands of a poor muscisian, it wouldn't be jealousy, it's dissapointment. Something the whole world can understand. These instruments are hand crafted, only 2 a day are made and they dont ship them out. You have to get on a waitlist then travel to Switzerland and buy it at their store for an arm and a leg.
Hahaha sorry buddy im not an angry person, by real musicians I mean ppl who know music theory, scales, arpegios and all that good stuff. These instruments are almost impossible to get and they cost an arm and a leg. Theyre being put to waste. Are you a hippie too? did I strike a nerve.
what i don't like about some of the jam clips is that it reminds me of a bunch of college kids in a drum circle just grooving, banging out straight 8th or 16th notes constantly, not really knowing or worry about which notes are being played since it's all in key, right?
That's why I said this is such a good composition. I think Manu wrote this song, it didn't just happen.
It's clearly just a difference in opinion, Mark Roach is just jamming in that one clip but is clearly very very skilled.
obviously no-one liked my comment, therefor some extra arguments: check the videos "hang drum jam #2" and "Hang drum inner voice" It has a more mystic tone than this one. And thats why I (not you, I) like those better.
for some reason this makes me think of Portico Quartet

Draconargentum 4 years ago
This is true some ppl are naturally gifted I wont argue against that. But this is an extremely rare thing and even still it will make them better musicians if they understood the language of music.

i totally agree with prototype. this is the only piece on youtube that actually incorporates any sense of melody into what is really a percussive instrument. this is really good, the others on here are cringeworthy.
sidviscous 4 years ago
No doubt Manu is the best I've seen so far on the Hang, but I think you judged too quickly when you saw my vids. /watch?v=M7wOOGJcSu0 --this is "cringeworhty", seriously?

Finally somebody who knows how to use a hand drum with some melody, RESPECT. Those hippies were making me angry, taking all the beutifull instruments away from real musicians.
prototype2030 4 years ago
define 'real' musicians PROTO
anyone can buy an instrument.. just look at all the kids murdering 'stairway to heaven' on their first guitar.. everyone has to start somewhere, and guess what? THEY saw it before you did, and THEY made a video.. if your angry about that then your likely angry about a lot of things. go outside and take a breath of fresh air
padraa 4 years ago
also.. its not like its a brand new invention.. just an updated and well engineered steel drum just like the caribbean people have used for ages

If Mozarts piano ended up in the hands of a poor muscisian, it wouldn't be jealousy, it's dissapointment. Something the whole world can understand. These instruments are hand crafted, only 2 a day are made and they dont ship them out. You have to get on a waitlist then travel to Switzerland and buy it at their store for an arm and a leg.
prototype2030 4 years ago
