I live in a third world country. My mother's gall bladder surgery costs us $1,500 US Dollars (adjusted to exchange rates during those times). A $121 US Dollars on a medicine could only costs us less than 2 dollars. I even have a cousin from America to take out his wisdom tooth here. He said that it'll cost about $700 there while he only incurred about $50 US Dollars here. He makes profit yes but cnsdr the people who are rich in ur country. They make more than the middle and poor strata combined.

However over 15 years ago, long before Sicko, I a British citizen but massive admirer of the US, felt the US had too terrible detractions that separated it from the rest of the so-called 'civilized' world: a lack of universal health coverage and the continued use of the death penalty. It's true that the movie did point out many of the problems in our healthcare system. The problem was towards the end of the film, Moore went back to his older tactics of lies and grotesque inaccuracies. That's what ends up discrediting his efforts. Of course, perhaps he felt he needed to do that for marketing purposes - to build controversy. It's hard to say.

Selective facts are still facts. I live in Toronto, Canada. The job my wife and I have does not give us health benefits at the moment so we have to pay full price for perscriptions. My daughter has to get her tonsils taken out in a couple of weeks and here in Canada they will do it for free. We waited about 2 hours at ST. Joseph hospital to find out she needed them removed, but they will remove them for free and I don't have to pay a cent. We would be screwed if we lived in the U.S.A.

Moore made a film which expresses a belief that everyone should have access to affordable healthcare in the US, and his opinion of how that should be achieved. He also gave a specific American 12k to help pay a medical bill. If he uses the latter to promote for the former, how is that dishonest? Seemingly, both actions share the same motive: desire increase American access to medical care. Even if you dislike his specific suggestions on the subject, I see no contradiction or moral failing here.

This year, in Alberta there were 2 cases of pregnant women losing their fetus while waiting in the emergency. Imagine besides the fact that they lost the child, the embarrassment.

I have lived in SEVERAL other countries in my travels. The cost for health care in America is insane. I have gotten the same drugs and care for a lot cheaper. Moore might be onto something here.

So much agreed, recently in France , i had a terrible allergy attack, to a corn product i misread on a french label... here...in the u.s. beofre getting treatment I would have accrued a terrible bill , there , i was able to walk in to a pharmacy , get the medication i already knew i needed for 5 euro, vs. 45 in the u.s..... with out a doctor visit for a prescription! the whole episode here would have cost me over 200 bucks.... I have never been able to afford health insurance in America.

Please take a moment to realize that in 2002 10 pharmaceutical companies were listed on Forbes Fortune 500 and amongst those companies. They averaged a 18% higher profit margin than all other fortune 500 hundred companies! They are not hurting for the green backs!
that's not really the right way to look at it. there's gotta be some reward for the risks of developing the meds. For those 10 companies that may be listed, how many thousands of other biotechs have gone belly up due to failed drugs that never past all the benchmarks (or ran out of money before they could). Where it does make a big difference, is that pharmas shouldn't be allowed to perk doctors for subscribing their name brand drugs over identical generics at much higher premiums.

garyIbarra, The poor and the rich are taken care of. But, please, don't forget that those pharmaceutical companies spends billions in research to come up with just the right cure for something. That costs a lot. Then, companies from NKorea, India and China come along and simply copy those that the US company spent years and billions developing. If you don't have to pay for the research, it is easy to sell medications cheaper. But that does not make it right.
That's the real issue on the pharmaceutical side. Just passing FDA approval can cost billions. And we all know what happens if after all that testing, something still slips through... Bankruptcy (or close to it) from all the lawsuits.
So ironically enough, when the other countries are getting cheaper (copied) meds than us, they again are getting another unappreciated "free lunch" off American R&D. I do believe, however, that the pharma ads with 50 disclaimers should go the way of cigarette ads - off the air.

People don't mention that there is Medicaid in the US for those with low income and resources. However, Medicaid pays so little to doctors (and the payments are so tricky to collect) that they do all they can to avoid dealing with Medicaid patients. Many offices won't even take Medicaid patients. Maybe the real question is why does a hospital bed (at least in NYC) cost $2500/night...
Yes, but U either must be old, crazy, pregnant, or a LEGAL immigrant for Medicade to help you! Go figure that stupidness out! If you're a "regular Amer. citizen" who's self employed or just poor, you GETS NOTHING!! At least in Md. it's like that. Medicaid doesnt cover lung transplants, heart surgeries, or anything like that. The doctors should work for the goverment and they should get paid through the government, and that would stop all of this. A simple solution for a big problem.
Nobody is being denied life saving heart surgery because they can't pay. This simply does not happen. In Britain however, the poor get it for free - but often die on huge waiting lists because ANYTHING GOVERNMENT RUN IS A GODDAMN MESS, ALWAYS HAS AND ALWAYS WILL BE. It is not the government's job to provide free health care.

But you want to know what's really nuts? In New York City I'm never sick yet my insurance was about $450/month with a $25 copay and a $100 or so yearly deductable. We recently lowered it with an HSA with a $1500 or so deductable, but it's still almost $300/month. The whole thing is a racket... NYC's health insurance rates are also just about the highest in the country for healthy people.
Talk about inhumane. $450 a mon. 4 healthy folks or $1000 a mon. for sick folks, it is a complete abomination to screw over someone's HEALTH & LIFE for evil corporate greed!! Oh oo, this almost sounds like the oil co. gas gauging at OUR expense!

I live in a third world country. My mother's gall bladder surgery costs us $1,500 US Dollars (adjusted to exchange rates during those times). A $121 US Dollars on a medicine could only costs us less than 2 dollars. I even have a cousin from America to take out his wisdom tooth here. He said that it'll cost about $700 there while he only incurred about $50 US Dollars here. He makes profit yes but cnsdr the people who are rich in ur country. They make more than the middle and poor strata combined.

Jim K found out that Moore posted the cheque, so he keeps it anyway even though JIM K truly believes in his critical opinion of Moore. If JIM had any character at all he would have sent the cheque back, but in reality his wife's health was more important than his credibility. Helping his wife was the right thing to do, but the healthcare system in America is the reason JIM is in the fucked up situation he is in, and Moore proved that. That was Moore's motivation not the film in general.

Hi, just ploughed my way through your diatribe. I haven't seen Sicko (yet) and I know Moore can exaggerate to the point of absurdness and end up defeating himself. However over 15 years ago, long before Sicko, I a British citizen but massive admirer of the US, felt the US had too terrible detractions that separated it from the rest of the so-called 'civilized' world: a lack of universal health coverage and the continued use of the death penalty. It's true that the movie did point out many of the problems in our healthcare system. The problem was towards the end of the film, Moore went back to his older tactics of lies and grotesque inaccuracies. That's what ends up discrediting his efforts. Of course, perhaps he felt he needed to do that for marketing purposes - to build controversy. It's hard to say.

Selective facts are still facts. I live in Toronto, Canada. The job my wife and I have does not give us health benefits at the moment so we have to pay full price for perscriptions. My daughter has to get her tonsils taken out in a couple of weeks and here in Canada they will do it for free. We waited about 2 hours at ST. Joseph hospital to find out she needed them removed, but they will remove them for free and I don't have to pay a cent. We would be screwed if we lived in the U.S.A.

I have no idea what is going on with who paid who, but health care in the US is should be called health scare! A buddy of mine was in an accident in which his knee got busted. One thing lead to another and now his share of the medical expenses is $7000. As far as I am concerned they might as well have charged him for the entire amount! I thought that if you have health insurance here, your covered. Apparently not. In Canada you are covered. Maybe our tax is hire, but its worth it!

Moore made a film which expresses a belief that everyone should have access to affordable healthcare in the US, and his opinion of how that should be achieved. He also gave a specific American 12k to help pay a medical bill. If he uses the latter to promote for the former, how is that dishonest? Seemingly, both actions share the same motive: desire increase American access to medical care. Even if you dislike his specific suggestions on the subject, I see no contradiction or moral failing here.

quiz, you look young. People die in Canada waiting for surgeries. I guess you don't have any older relatives with health problems. Also medical bills in canada ( paid by the govt, i.e. my tax money) increased by 50% in the last 7 years with no improvement. Canada has one of the lowest doctors per capita in OECD.
This year, in Alberta there were 2 cases of pregnant women losing their fetus while waiting in the emergency. Imagine besides the fact that they lost the child, the embarrassment.

So much agreed, recently in France , i had a terrible allergy attack, to a corn product i misread on a french label... here...in the u.s. beofre getting treatment I would have accrued a terrible bill , there , i was able to walk in to a pharmacy , get the medication i already knew i needed for 5 euro, vs. 45 in the u.s..... with out a doctor visit for a prescription! the whole episode here would have cost me over 200 bucks.... I have never been able to afford health insurance in America.

If any one is feeling bad for the pharmaceutical companies and their loosing money do to other countries stealing our ideas. Please take a moment to realize that in 2002 10 pharmaceutical companies were listed on Forbes Fortune 500 and amongst those companies. They averaged a 18% higher profit margin than all other fortune 500 hundred companies! They are not hurting for the green backs!

that's not really the right way to look at it. there's gotta be some reward for the risks of developing the meds. For those 10 companies that may be listed, how many thousands of other biotechs have gone belly up due to failed drugs that never past all the benchmarks (or ran out of money before they could). Where it does make a big difference, is that pharmas shouldn't be allowed to perk doctors for subscribing their name brand drugs over identical generics at much higher premiums.

Jonedelleman, you may be right. I'm a filmmaker, not a politician. But do you agree that politicians love a good scapegoat? All sides Left/Right want to stay in power. Maybe Moore is a fraud, maybe not. If your sources are the same as mine (i.e. mass media) we're not getting the full story. Regarding Moore's effect on economy: The tax revenue generated by a hit film is enormous. This is an American film, though it might seem un-American. It will bring a lot of money into the USA.

garyIbarra, The poor and the rich are taken care of. But, please, don't forget that those pharmaceutical companies spends billions in research to come up with just the right cure for something. That costs a lot. Then, companies from NKorea, India and China come along and simply copy those that the US company spent years and billions developing. If you don't have to pay for the research, it is easy to sell medications cheaper. But that does not make it right.

I am not a proponent of any individual person but I am a big believer in common sense, and it doesnt take a genius to realize the health care system in this country is inherantly flawed like any other system we have that allows outside interests to influence government with their money. You can tell these guys are fearfull of this movie just by their little photoshoped pictures of Moore, they cant debate the issue intelligently so they resort to childish means, its sad really.

People don't mention that there is Medicaid in the US for those with low income and resources. However, Medicaid pays so little to doctors (and the payments are so tricky to collect) that they do all they can to avoid dealing with Medicaid patients. Many offices won't even take Medicaid patients. Maybe the real question is why does a hospital bed (at least in NYC) cost $2500/night...

Medicaid doesnt cover lung transplants, heart surgeries, or anything like that. The doctors should work for the goverment and they should get paid through the government, and that would stop all of this. A simple solution for a big problem.

Nobody is being denied life saving heart surgery because they can't pay. This simply does not happen. In Britain however, the poor get it for free - but often die on huge waiting lists because ANYTHING GOVERNMENT RUN IS A GODDAMN MESS, ALWAYS HAS AND ALWAYS WILL BE. It is not the government's job to provide free health care.

But you want to know what's really nuts? In New York City I'm never sick yet my insurance was about $450/month with a $25 copay and a $100 or so yearly deductable. We recently lowered it with an HSA with a $1500 or so deductable, but it's still almost $300/month. The whole thing is a racket... NYC's health insurance rates are also just about the highest in the country for healthy people.
