  • hey,

could you post some detailed instructions for this? i checked your website, but it just showed more of the mechanisms than instructions on building the thing. great project, though! absolutely genius!

    thanks!

  • be sure that this will destroy the records grooves badly. ;-)

  • Also: how did you program the record to spin at 33rpm?

  • What did you use for a needle?

  • А что за запись где в конце про Гагарина? О_о

  • Убийца винила

  • this is pretty neat.

  • Ахуенно, тока баянище

  • Heartaches by the number :D

  • whether the cup is in the kit?

  • Now build a second one and try to beat match them together :)

  • 何が出来上がるか全く想像していなかったのですが、これは凄いですっ!!

  • sometimes sounds like a car wreck but good job :D

  • Thanks for the tutorial.

  • Wow...Pretty good!

  • :O did you make this on your own!

  • that is soo cool!!

  • use paper cones they sound better.. base on my own experience ;)

  • The irony of this is that you could go out and buy a real phonograph for about $200 less than the legos in the video cost Still a nice job though, be careful not to ruin your records :)

  • what's up the the quotations? 'free' my ass.

  • hello everybody

    i made one!

    it was very easy

    and mine got better sound.

    maybe because quality of vid.

  • Strangers in the Night Frank Sinara 1965! I have that LP too! XD

  • PCM recorder

  • when theres no power ill just take out the actual turntable from the machine, poke two holes in a styrofoam cup & stick the rod on the end of the stylus through the holes on the cup and manually spin the record at 331/3 RPM.

  • It actually works! The quality isnt the best, but you are dealing with a plastic cup and a bad needle. Cool.

  • 6.10 nice xdd

  • i play records at home with a better device: a paper horn with a needle or a pointed wooden stick at the end. to turn the record i use the end of an old pen end attach the record onto it. then press the point of the pen to a box and turn.

  • Use a paper cone connected to the cup not metal. Metal destroys a record.

  • keep experimenting.

no final project was ever designed 100% sucessful in the begining stages.

    good job.

try a mini set of computer speaker amplifiers hooked through to the signal output,if you have an output.

    peace

  • I think it would be better to poke a hole in the cup, then put an actual record-player needle through the hole. That would probably be safer for the record. Then again, record-player needles are pretty short.

  • You really need a counterweight on that thing, as if the needle itself isn't bad enough for the record.

  • looks cool verry clever idea if you cant afford a real record player and you all ready have the parts

  • Good Engine but bad sound.

  • Is a Analog Gramophone, not a digital player....

  • All records & tapes are analog, I think it sounds bad because of a poor needle choice and incorrect handeling of the record.

  • bad sound

    but very good idea

  • not rocket science... but pretty good!

  • you are destroying your records by using this needle it is too sharp and if you play more then 5 the record is gone forever so i don't commandant this just if you want do destroy your record...

  • oh dear. i have a record player which has a wooden plinth and everything. also you don't have to put it together. is this a very old video? the hifi sound reproduction is wonderful, i admit, but is it worth all of the effort? without a plinth?

  • wow! 5 stars!!

  • pretty clever

  • is it a used or not used coffee cup

  • It can be used or not. It's just an empty cofee cup. Bigger ones are the best.

  • Does the player damage the record at all?

  • it probally does

  • i guess only to be used with some crappy vinyl, none of the expensive stuff.

  • ima try that, i bought a kool & the gang record for 50 cents...

  • omg this just makes me want lego mindstorms even more so i can play those random records in my basement that i have no clue whats on them XD

  • Cool!

  • so cool!

  • this is t%#tn kick but dude :)

  • great sound!

  • Great for a haunted house...

  • amazing.

  • sounds like noise, just cant hear the music

  • holy crap!!! nice man!!! =D

  • Good fun but not loud enough to dance to

  • You will be surprised how loud it is. I actually have to put a napking inside the cup to lower the volume.

  • THIS DOES WORK I TRIED IT!! I would have never thought of this

    !!

  • great

  • Sounds Great!!!

    xDDDDD

  • lol

  • but what if they are watching this too? ^^

  • LOL! I don't think I will be swapping you my fabulous Gilbert Gramophone from 1929 for it! ; - )

  • This is cool.

Blows my Technics SL1210's out of the water. You should build 2 of these and do some crazy turntablism tricks.

  • GO FRANKY! I just hope you used a record needle, anything else woul scratch the vinyl, and ruin your record!

  • i think you are cool for makeing that record player! p.s. wrere can you buy those little machines? plese write back

  • i think you are cool for makeing that record player! p.s. wrere can you buy those little machines? plese write back

  • I am highly displeased with the fidelity of your record player..... Perhaps a more expensive coffee cup would make the audio better?

  • also muffling the motors. could be done by insulating around it.

  • No, he needs better cables of course...

  • OMG it works?! WOW!

  • wow,not what you can call hi-fi but its extraordinary

  • omg how do you program that :|

  • all u do is set the motor 2 continuosly run

  • that is a good way ... to trach your records ;)

  • No kidding...

  • Blunt the needle and it wont damage it so much.

  • I did choose only push pins with a blunt tip. There is no [visible] damage to the disk. Even the cup weight is less than 4 grams.

  • All the more reasons for buying lego NTX... Damn I need it so much. Maybe any cheaper alternatives?

  • hey use the buttons on the nxt to speed up or slow down the record, or some how make a slider

  • Actually, I did that. I created different programs to change the function (speed, direction, etc) but I didn't show that feature in the video.

  • Hey, that is a neat little machine you made to play records. I love that kind of stuff when it comes to media and electronics and music. Are those easy to build? Where do you get the parts to make one? Is the speed adjustable to play up to 45rpms?

    Gary

  • LEGO Mindstorms are quite expensive. You need to be rich or work hard to buy one. You can also try Knex or Meccano. Check some toy stores, you may be able to find a toy that allows you to create machines.

The one that I made, uses LEGO Mindstorm parts and are able to be programmed (different speeds, direction, torque, etc). Not difficult to make.

  • TOO COOL!

  • Gahh...those poor records' grooves are being destroyed. I mean, you're smart!!!

  • nazpıyobu amk

  • You should go buy the largest papaer cup that you can find, wonder if the large foam cups that McDonalds sells large tea in would make it sound better

  • is that going at 33(33 and 1 third) rpm ?

  • I tried to make it spin 33 1/3 but I was not able to. It spins at 33 or 34 approximately.

  • i dont recommend u to use a metal piece to touch the disc cuz it will scratch it.. just thought u might want to know this..

  • That was so cool watching you build it. I almost cringed seeing that big ol' needle,I would've tried to mound an actual diamond needle. I've had to do that before. Tape it around the arm. Sure picks up the surface noise, tho. The paper cup will naturally pick up better, to absorb the sound vibrations. It was like a science class. Good work.

  • pretty cool idea :-)

  • Doesn't the needle kill the groves?

  • Yes, the pin damages the groves if it have really bad quality and the pressure is too much. This version doesn't apply too much pressure. Anyway, Vinyl disks are damaged each time it is played regardless the quality of the needle, slowly, but for sure.

  • hook an amp into the needle to improve the sound quality. if you dont feel like doing that, using foil or a halls coughdrop wrapper also works

  • I'm working to make it electric but using parts easily available. I would like to read more about using foil to improve the sound quality.

  • What are those gizmos and thingamagigs being used? No mention of them, no list, no explanation, no info on source of materials.

  • Those things are LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT parts. That is a robotic construction set from LEGO (very expensive, by the way). More details on my website: josepino (dot) com at the link: LEGO ROBOTS

  • Great ! How about playing "The Dixie Cups" with a dixie cup ?

  • Dang! pretty cool idea!

  • omg you will just destroy preciuos LP.. but nice..

  • That's very usefull to play old Shellac LPs because they don't need any electric amplifier or special "needles".

  • thats prity inpresive

  • That was cool.

  • Ingenious!! Thanks for posting this.

  • This is amaazing! Cool! Keep inventing!

  • Interesting, but I think you ruined the records.

  • Of course it damages the records as any other turntable will do. The way it was assembled doesn't apply too much pressure to the needle (pin), so it last longer.... it depends of the quality of the pin. Anyway, this is a educational project.

I do purchase old vinyl discs to play with.

  • yeah, but I think that what would be even better is to have the tone arm on a gimble with a counterweigt on the opposite end so that the tracking weight is fully adjustable. This may improve soundquality and inproove durability. The other thing I noticed is that it has a very hard time maintaining a constant speed. It might help if you used reduction gear drive and had the motor turn faster.

  • thats freakin awesome

  • Wow!...Cool!...Thanks for showing how to build it! :-)
