he's got great cow sense like a good cutting horse! no wonder he has quarter horse in him. not a fan of bull fighting at all, but he is a beautiful specimen of a horse!
LOL that guy in the beginning running around with that "trainee bull" shall we say must be really tierd after all that chasing! But i love how that bull just stands there and is like ".... yer, hi... whatever" LOL
@theepona1 yeah I think god cares. And it's cruel, actually. How would you like to be that bull being stabbed in the back and drowning in your own blood?
@theepona1 Actually He does care. He said so. "A righteous man regards the life of his animal,
But the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel." Proverbs 12:10 Personally I believe in a just God, and that all those who inflict pain and suffering on an animal in the name of "sport" will, unless they repent, suffer every iota of pain they have caused.
I get in tears every time I see this, but for a different reason. Tearing sideways is pretty hard on tendons and ligaments, it takes a pretty fearful horse to tear around like that, and bullfighting is a blood sport.
The spanish Bull "el Toro Bravo" is breeded to fight. There is no comparation with any bull used for Cutting or working Cowhorse. This bulls will not turn back, they go for the horse. A Horse for Bullfights of course should not be afraid, like the Cutting Horse he should have a cowsense and beeing very very courage. I don t know if Horses are afraid, i think the problem is they can t understand the danger..
@troyskippy I've been told by my Spanish horse friends that the bullfighters intentionally choose horses that have a little fear. The fear keeps them safe. My friends have horses for parades and festivals, and they buy the fearless horses from the breeders. BEAUTIFUL animals, our Spanish horses we have here in the US don't even compare to them over there!
sorry, but do u know where this was filmed? because i was on holiday in Menorca quite a few years ago now and i am almost certain it is the same place as this when i went to see these horses put a mini show on for the tourists, before hitting the towns as part of the fiesta season x
haha yall are so funny with your dressage and all that. what happened to the "working cowboy horse"? never saw john wayne on a dressage horse. that made me laugh when someone said dressage had lost its purpose and use! didnt know it ever had one!
I love this horse! It's so beautiful, and what it does is amazing. However, I HATE bullfighting.. If only they could have shows without torturing the bull!
I so agree, it's such a shame that dressage has become an end in itself and has lost its purpose and it's usefullness. It must be so sad for a horse to do all that training but never put it into practise .
Is this Merlin ? In answer to some saying the horse is scared or whatever, my horses live with cattle and my colts greatest joy each day is to chase the steers. He particularly loved to fight with a big steer, same size as him, who would 'stand off' and paw/lower his head, then the colt would rush in and bite the top of his head between the horns then run off. The steer instigated this game , but HIS greatest fun was had by sneaking up behind the colt when he was tied up and chewing his tail.
Merlin(Orpheo) is a Bullfighting Lusitano stallion 7/8's Lusitano X 1/8th Quarterhorse, bred by former Rejoneador Jacques Bonnier (the tall gray haired man in the video who greets de Mendoza before he returns to the bull). Merlin was initially trained by Rafi Dumond. He is currently owned and ridden in the bullring by Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza. Although a Spaniard, de Mendoza, fights in the Portuguese style in which the horse and rider dispatch the bull rather than merely weakening the bull.
Hey, thanks for that piece of info. I always wondered about the horse, where he came from and all, where he was trained. Although I absolutely cannot stand bullfighting, I totally love watching this horse and rider do their dance.
The coordination and mutual understandings between horse and the rider is very much essential. However, it is sad to see these animals (both horse and bull) being tortured in the name of fun..
if you knew anything about horses you could see that the horse enjoys this. look at there ears, there tail do they move alot? no! his ears never pin back wich is a sign of fear or ander. Trust me a 1,000 pound animal is NOT going to do something it doesnt want to do. I know i deal with them every single day.
That horse (Merlin) is not panicked at all. A panicked horse would not charge at a bull. It takes years and years of careful training and if you have ever seen that horse in an actual bull fight, he almost appears to enjoy it. I myself was disgusted with bullfighting. The horse and bull are highly respected figures in Spain, and if people would care to research the topic and understand the culture, it would not offend you so much.
Agreed. Once I found out more about Spanish bull fighing, I understood just how much people respect the horse and bull. It's dishonorable to torture the bull or injure the horse; if you do that, your career is just about over.
no, its not that simple. if an old woman gets robbed, do you just look away because you dont like it? children in india get married at the age of 12 to some guy they dont know. do you look away because you dont like it?
maybe you do, but with looking away, you will never ever make cruel things change.
@JaguarsShadow94 i like the atitude but the whole of spain is for bullfighting it makes millions of eros and produces some of the best horses in the wold and no i dont look away but im also not niev enough to know that my opinioon wont change anything and y dont u go stop those childern being abused rather than tryig to protect something that would try and kill you if u helped it the bull doesnt care wat u think never has never will
@jrhowardamyrose actually, the training is for the horse to move this way with the rider on top! my lusitano stallion has been doing these exact moves on his own since he was a tiny foal! the momen he saw a calf staring at him he'd charge into it and tease it till the calf charged back and then he only moved aside at the last moment leaving the calf in stupour and looking all proud of himself! it was a HUGE laugh! I refuse to take part in it, but if he likes it, I let him have his fun ;)

The most phenomenal partnership between man and horse I've ever witnessed.
I only focus on spectacle, pure beauty, health and agile maneuvers in this demonstration.
I still come to tears of joy each time I watch it!!!!

Yes it is Merlin! He comes from the breeding farm of Jacques Bonnier in France, that is also where they carefully choose and train their horses.
Lots of theses horses are not just pure Lusitano horses, some of them are Cruzados, Thoroubred X Lusitano horses
