  • Very similar to mine but I always making something from your videos and they are always great.

  • @cozzyk Thank you!

  • this actually looks like an awesome tutorial recipe if your a rookie at cooking, like seriously, i just started to learn how to cook

  • @RyeowookAndDonghae Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.

  • @RyeowookAndDonghae Not healthy if you add sour cream.

  • 11 assholes must truly hate peas. I mean, what the blazes, who would want to give this video thumbs down?

  • ham-hocks are better than bacon

  • @RexRed2 Yes, they are great in this recipe!

  • This was an awesome tutorial. I think you are great at this!! Thank you so much for showing me a simple way to make one of my favourite comfort foods!!!

  • @DisneySparrow7 Thank you! Hope you enjoy it!

  • This recipe is is awesome and it is cheap too!!!!!

  • can i blender it, instead of crushing it manually?

  • @shakaama Yes, absolutely!

  • @ChefTips Came out perfect. Roommate tried it last week, but he burns water. Seriously, he made his and it came out like small rocks and the burned the bottom of it. So it was burned undercooked. He swore he put it on for a long time. About 15 minutes into mine, the peas were clearly getting tender.

I can say now, it is not my favorite dish. I'm not a big legume person anyway. But my friends on facebook were all asking me to bring them some, now if i could just apprentice to someone...

  • @shakaama Cool. Thanks for letting me know. It's very good for you! Cheers, J

  • I am ADDICTED to pea soup!!!

    HELP ME!!!

  • Looks good thanks for sharing. Going to add this to my playlist.

  • @Missyplaymate3

    Thank you!

  • loved ur handy tip about frozen bacon and ur directions for cooking is clear and simple to follow.. pls keep em coming!

  • @mzbebe82 Will do. Thanks!

  • This reminds me of a failed attempt to make a pea soup once... To make it short, the peas appeared to be a poor quality(well, for cooking that is :P)... Rinsed over night...3(!!) hours of cooking.....And even after all that you'd need a hammer to break those peas. I guess they were old or something. lol.... Happened with me a couple of times but that was a little extreme. I think those peas may seen how the first pyramids were build in Egypt xD

  • @MadeofBlackIce Funny story! I promise this recipe will turn out perfect — providing you use fresher, quality split peas! :) Cheers, Jason

  • after watching this, I've made this at least once a month for the past five months....awesome ...everybody loves it...tonight...making the same recipe from fresh peas from my garden...yeah!

btw, rather mash, I usually whip it up in the blender...so whole peas work too!...gourmet soup!

  • @tinoamor Thanks for commenting! How is it with the fresh peas?

  • @ChefTips Just as awesome with fresh peas...same great flavor, with a hint of freshness and equally slight texture of the pea skins, with overall great wholesomeness, thanks again,...healthy eating to 'ya and looking forward to trying some of your additional recipes

  • @tinoamor Very cool! Thanks for sharing your tips! More vids coming soon.

  • In Sweden you would eat this with a dollop of coarse sweet mustard and a generous sprinkling of marjoram (some people use thyme in stead, but I wouldn't recommend it). Also you would eat it exclusively on a Thursday (I do not know why this is, but it's true).

  • @ilsennodipoi

    Interesting. Thanks for sharing!

    Cheers!

  • Again I query: What happens to the bay leaf? Do you fish it out THEN mash?

    Looks wonderful!

    cheers

    dave m

  • @calbear1313 Yes, you should fish it out first.

  • yummie, but this recipie is german/dutch. and we use cream instead of sour cream. and please use butter instead of olive oil. olive oil is mediteranian.

  • what kind of peas did you use. dinner was 2 hours late and the peas are still hard

  • @johnleaderroberts That doesn't sound right... Do you live at a high altitude?

  • @johnleaderroberts Did you use split or whole peas? I once used whole dried peas and they were as tough as boots no matter how long I cooked them. Split peas become tender in next to no time!

  • Hello, i don't eat pork, if i just leave it out is it still gonna be good?

  • @djerena

You can leave out the bacon and add a little bit of liquid smoke in it's place. I have done this before and added about a teaspoon.

    Cheers!

  • I've now made this probably a dozen times and thought I should finally comment to tell you how much we enjoy it, it's become a staple in our kitchen. We love it exactly as you directed, topped with sour cream and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Very filling and delicious!

  • @feltmatemily Thanks so much for commenting. I'm so glad your family enjoys the recipe! We just made some the other day. :)

  • I'm going to make this soup today. MM, MM, MM,MM ....!!!!!!!!! And I think I'm going to have with garlic bread. Thank's

  • @tebanboy37

    Sounds good to me!

  • i Hate peas.. LOVE split pea soup :D

  • @sleepyownz

I don't care much for peas on their on either. But when they're in soup it's a different story! :D

  • thnx jeson it seems very tasty but i m pure vegetarian so can u suggest me an alternative to bacon....luved ur tomato soup(i made it widout puff)

  • @snowjesh

Hello. Two things you can try. Leave out the bacon and add a few drops of liquid smoke after you add the broth. Or if you want a bit of spice, add a few drops of chipotle sauce. Hope this helps...

    Cheers!

  • I thought there was a lot more to making split pea soup! Thanks so much! I'm making it this weekend!

  • This is the best split pea soup I've ever had, Thanks!

  • @ckseminole1 You're welcome!

  • where do you buy the bay leafs?

  • @roxyroxy34 These are found in the spice section of our supermarket.

  • Such a good recipe! Thank you very much!

  • @number1spatula

Thanks for taking the time and commenting.

    Cheers!

  • Hi, I'm back, and it's winter time once again here in Australia. I made your soup, and enjoyed it immensely. To go with it, I lightly pan fry Turkish bread slices in about 2 tablespoons of peanut oil (I sometimes use canola or olive oil) until brown and then add a few sprinkles of salt on the golden brown bread. The 2 go together beautifully. Bon appetit

  • @ClubXrock Wow! That sounds wonderful! I've never had Turkish bread before, but I'll be on the lookout now. Thanks for the kind words! Cheers, Jason

  • OMG delish! Thanks for teaching those of us who are not too swift in the kitchen that we too can make an amazing dish. I think you've got a great smile! :)

  • @sleepindogz Thanks! Hope you enjoyed it!

  • never seen a faker smile in my life .

  • @validfor1hour

Nothing fake about it. This is one of my first videos and I was not that comfortable in front of the camera.

  • @validfor1hour This man takes time to kindly help us with our cooking and the only comment you can leave is how "fake his smile is".Why don't you do the world a favor and end yourself.

  • @validfor1hour It's tough being in front of the camera and smile naturally into that peice of machinery. It's easy, however, to pick out internet trolls.

  • @eeektavius

    Haha! Excellent!

  • Well I added 1/2 pound of bacon(by accident originally) 7 cups of stock and blended it with a hand blender in the pot. Sautéed vegetables in the bacon grease and then poured what grease I could get out. Creamy perfection.

  • @dietcoke737373

    Sounds good! Thanks for sharing.

  • scandinavian recipe???

I think we- canadians - totally OWN that soup. Its a part of french canadian history even!

  • Great recipe, though I found (mine) a little brothy. On my next try I think I'll reduce the chicken stock from 8 cups to 6.5 (to add more later if needed), the garlic from 2 cloves to 3 (or 4) and an extra carrot.

(Note to fellow neo- chefs: Use manual masher. My hand blender pureed it a little, taking away from the soup's texture. )

  • Hi Chef Jason: I followed what you did, step by step, chop by chop, and although I've never made Split Pea Soup before, because of you, I too feel like a chef. You're the best. Thank you, Chef Jason.

  • @HenryBoot Thank you so much! I'm so glad you liked it!

  • wow, so easy to make ah, well i did it, thanks for the recipe, without the bacon since I don't eat pork, It taste really great,

    thank you Jason

  • @ANAMALAK319 Cool! I'm glad you enjoyed it without the bacon.

  • Hey Jason, I found this video awhile back when I was looking for a recipe for split pea soup. My girlfriend was sick and this is her favorite kind of soup. I've had literally no experience making soup from scratch (or much of anything from scratch to be honest) but your video was super easy to follow and it turned out great with the first attempt! Thank you for posting these videos, I'm looking forward to trying out your funnel cake recipe :)

  • @jrcboise

Glad the recipe turned out for you. Thanks for sharing that!

    Jason

  • @ cheftips was wondering if you have to boil the peas first or do just put it in uncooked? could i get the canned split peas or is it better uncooked?

  • I saute them in the veggies, and as the soup boils and simmers the dried peas will cook. Dried peas don't take long to cook down.

  • nice piece of work made this twice and it's a winner ! I was wondering are u suppose to drain the fat from the bacon ?

  • @presarioajr

Hi. I usually don't because the fat is used to saute the vegetables. If there is a lot of fat left over after the vegetables have cooked down, you may want to drain it.

  • Thanks for this recipe!

  • @venuebien

    Thank you for commenting!

  • where do you buy the tools?

  • @SavannahHighsmith1

Hi. What are looking to buy? Maybe I can help direct you.

  • thanks for uploading this

  • @centenojustin

    You're welcome. Thanks for commenting.

  • I absolutely love your recipes. Do you have any vegetarian alternative to the bacon? Soy bacon is available but it is not my favorite. Thanks, Donna

  • Thanks! Finding a good substitute for bacon is difficult. I might just season it up with a little extra salt and white pepper.

  • i came across this lookin for reicpies, well done, ill definitly look at more of your work

  • @Kalel240

    Thank you!

  • so sophisticated! :)

  • @sqwishdabug

    Thank you! ;-)

  • Thank you.

  • @georgeolt654

    Thank you for commenting.

  • KhaosTy

I like it a little lumpy

  • @lydeppmath

Hi. You can puree it a little less to keep it more lumpy.

  • Hi...I tried it today and the peas didn't melt. Yes I mashed em up but the soup was still lumpy and had that pea like consistency. Probably need to use a blender

  • @KhaosTy

Yes, a blender would be the way to go. You can also test the peas to make sure they are soft and cooked before you blend.

  • Thank you for taking so much of your time to make these great videos for us. I really enjoy watching your videos and learning from them. I really want to try this soup but I am wondering if I can use anything else besides Bacon. I don't eat bacon/pork. Thank you!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you! Instead of bacon, you can try using a turkey bacon or just make it without. Won't taste exactly the same, but you can season it with more salt to taste at the end. Hope you enjoy it! Jason

  • A little liquid smoke helps if you are going vegetarian.

  • @ih8dux

Oh yeah, I mentioned that in a post on here a long time ago. Thanks for posting this!

  • This guy is THE MAN! Straight forward. No wasted time. Easy to follow. Great stuff!

  • Thanks! We appreciate your kind words. Take care, Jason

  • Hi, your soup looks great. I want to make it but I was wondering if you can use other kind of meat that has less fat or can you make it wothout meat. I know that the bacon must give the soup a great flavor but my doctor's recommendation is to limit fat consumption.

  • Hi there! You could try using turkey bacon. I haven't personally tried it in the soup, but we cook it for breakfast and it's pretty decent. Let me know how it works for you! Cheers, Jason

  • Scandinavian! Woo!

  • I going in the kitchen right now!Gonna make this soup,

    ill let ya know.

  • @francinenazaruddin

    Thanks for commenting!

  • Fixed this today for lunch and will have it again for supper - WOW again to you and your soups!!!

  • I really must get to the kitchen, this is another wonderful sounding soup. When I fix it I will let you know, looks really yummy

  • Great! Let me know what you think. Cheers, Jason

  • Well I made the soup. Problem was I was enjoying the taste so much while it was cooking I sampled it too many times and burnt my mouth as a result. Very easy to make and it tasted better than expected. I didn't have any celery, but will add some next time. I did add the tortellini, and I'm glad to say they went well with the soup without dominating the meal. Why your soup works is it's very simple, using good natural ingredients that most people love. A good winter meal!

  • Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the recipe. Soup is always wonderful during the colder months, and this is one of our family favorites. Thanks for taking the time to comment and get back to us! Cheers, Jason

  • Hi ChefTips. I'm about to make some today, so it could be consumed tomorrow night to improve the flavour. I'm going to make an addition to the soup, as to lift it into 'main meal' territory. I'm going to add some (not many) cooked tortellini, which will float in the centre of the soup. I will add some nicely grilled bacon on top of the tortellini, along with some croutons and cracked pepper. I hope it won't wreck the soup but I'll give it a go. Thanks for replying to various comments so far

  • I like your creative thought process on this dish ClubXrock! This is what chefs/cooks do. You take ideas and run with with them. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

    Cheers!

  • How many does this serve?? It's hard to tell how much is in the pot!!

  • This serves 6-8 people.

  • I'm making this soup right now (waiting for it to boil). It smells amazing! My first time making a split pea soup! Thank you for the recipe: very simple and easy to follow instructions!

  • That's what I was hoping to do. Provide easy, quick videos for the viewer. Glad you appreciate it, and took the time to comment. Hope you enjoy the recipe.

    Cheers,

    Jason

  • Looks delicious. I include beef short ribs with mine and also something my Grandmother brought over from Russia that she used to call "klutchkees". They're nothing more than a dense, peppery dumpling..FABULOUS.

  • Mmmm. Sounds great! Thanks for sharing.

  • I rarely eat vegetables but this looks really good. I've gotta try it!

  • Eat more vegetables! lol. Hope you like the recipe.

  • Would be cool if you could make pea-soup...

The swedish way (ärtsoppa in Swedish.)

Good luck trying that out my friend, simple, but god it's good!

  • Sounds good. My wife's relatives come from Sweden, so we have many family recipes. Thanks for the suggestion! Cheers, Jason

  • everytime i pound garlic with the knife, my husband always cringe, he always worry that i will cut my hand and he said that is the wrong way to peel garlic, is it true?

  • That is a popular method, but you have to be careful. Maybe you can use a mallet to ease your husband's concerns?

  • Thanks for the recipe! Good Stuff!

  • You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it! Jason

  • Yea, I found your video a few months ago, and my family loved it!

I had to re-look it up today, as its simmering right now, as I type this.

  • Excellent! Enjoy the soup! Thanks for your support — Jason

  • This soup is on our list of comfort foods

Frozen bacon just thawed a tad is so much easier to cut THANKS!!!!

  • Glad you enjoy it! Take care, Jason

  • bay leaf is so ridiculously strong, it blows my mind everytime i use it

  • You are so right about that MajorTom11011. It is packed with intense flavor. One leaf is very powerful.

  • i can make rock n roll soup.....my speciallity is david pea broth.....

  • Thanks for the growner.... :P

  • This soup is delicious! I'm very new to cooking and couldn't believe I made such an amazing soup. Thanks Chef Jason Hill. I think I'll try your Chicken Marsala next :)

  • i made this yesterday for my guests...with some modifications but it was delicious! everyone loved it!

  • Wonderful! So glad to hear you enjoyed it!

  • this is delish :)

  • my mom made split pea soup for us kids when we were younger and threw in some sliced up frankfuters and even with pasta.

well looks like i am making some split pea soup baby!!!!

    thanks chef jason

  • Cool! Hope you enjoy our recipe! ~ Jason

  • Ooh I love it already and I haven't even tried it!

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question but what difference does creme fraiche (vs. regular cream) make in, say, pasta sauce?

  • A true creme fraiche will add more of a nutty flavor than regular cream.

  • Creme fraiche is hard to get :p

But basically its like sour cream, but sweeter and he has a very nice texture to it. Also, its more expensive :P

  • may be you are right, but i have a peas soup on the menu and its allways nice green. - just add spinach its allways good..

  • what about blanching peas at 1st?

  • They cook pretty quickly. You don't need to blanch them. Thanks! Jason

  • can peas work at all?

  • i am sure it is nice and tasty, but i think its beter if you add the peas at the end (to keep the colour green) als is helpful if you add a hand of spinach in to the soup befor you blitz it. - just try it..

  • I like the spinach idea, but the peas have to be added first because it takes a while for them to cook down and soften. Thanks for the comment!

  • 1st of all.. peal the carrots...

  • Why?

  • because there is soil trapped in the carrots crust and thats bad for the kidney.

  • It's no dirtier than any other veggie youcan wash under running water. And so many of the minerals in a carrot, just as in potatoes which grow underground, are in the outer layer. So why peel it off? You are losing some of the nutrition and value you paid for. Why make it less nutritious? If the looks bother you. give it a wash or scrub and then eat, grate, cook, whatever.

  • Thank you so much! I was looking for this info on the web, but your video makes the whole difference in the world. THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

  • You're welcome ProfesorMacOnline. Thanks for commenting!

  • I am about to make this soup! I'll be using just a bit of sausage instead of bacon! :)

  • Cool! What kind of sausage did you use?

  • Thank you for all of your wonderful videos.

I used this recipe, but with a few changes to make it vegetarian

    1) removed the bacon,

    2) +1 clove of garlic

    3) vegetable broth instead of chicken

It turned out allright, but I found the flavor to still be lacking (I imagine the smoke and fat from the bacon adds alot to the soup). Would you possibly have any recommendations to enhance the flavor of this dish but keep it vegetarian?

    Thanks much!

  • maybe you can try adding some more garlic flavor (garlic powder), black pepper, dried basil or other spices u may like...

  • Hi, sorry so long in responding. Bacon adds salt and smoke flavor. You may want to add a bit more salt, and to add a hint of smoke flavor, you can adding a drop of liquid smoke into the soup. Hope this helps. Thanks for the question.

    Jason

  • Liquid smoke is great for adding smoke flavor w/o adding meat!

  • Thanks Jason! Did you use a few green beans for garnish at the end?

  • Hi fyreowl! Actually it was green onion that I used. Thanks for the question.

    Jason

  • Just made this today, but w/ ham hocks. quite good!

  • Great! So glad to hear you enjoyed it! Jason

  • My dad makes this all the time! But instead of bacon he uses ham! Its soooooooooooooo good! :D

  • Sounds gooooooooood! Thanks for commenting.

  • I can tell you love to cook so much b/c you smile from ear to ear in all your videos. Keep it up, I'll be watching

  • Thanks for the nice comment. More videos are in the works! =]

  • I am so jealous of your knives.. they are so sharp!! Lovely recipe.. will try it this weekend. I dont eat pork though.. will add chicken bits instead. Hope it turns out nice...

  • Hi. Thanks for commenting. I have a few videos about knives, knife steel, and knife sharpening that might be of interest to you. If you omit the salt pork or bacon in this recipe, you may have to add a pinch of salt at the end. Let us know how it turns out. Thanks for commenting.

  • jus wondering i didnt see you season it?? was it jus me who didnt see this lol?? an if u didnt is it b.c the bacon is enoguh seasoning?? i know carrots are aromatic flavors but i really dont like carrots that much can i omit or substitute??

  • The only seasoning I add is the bay leaf, and the white pepper at the end. The salty bacon and the broth add enough salt. You can omit the carrots and something that you like.

    Thanks for commenting.

  • i didnt see you season ?? is it me or did u season anything....or is the bacon salty enough to season the split pea souppp???

  • Hi. Yes the bacon, and the broth have enough salt that I do not need to add salt. I do add white pepper at the end.

  • oh man this was so good. It it also really good with ham instead of bacon.

  • I agree, ham would be great in this soup as well. Thanks for commenting!

  • Awesome, wish I could use full frozen peas tho :( and is it ok to use a boullion cube instead of stock?

  • Sure, you can use bouillon cubes

  • Where im from, we mix mustard on our pea soup.

  • That sounds good. I will try that next time I make it!

    Cheers,

    Jason

  • Taste so good make you wanna slap yo mama

  • do you know why jason didn't comment you back?causes that is just so immiture
