the fact morimoto chose to be conservative against someone who is a master of it was probably not the best decision. especially when the judges were expecting original and unorthodox dishes. while not his fault, but the judges felt a little let down by that, especially the photographer guy. though kishi seemed biased towards the iron chef, she is also the most qualified person on the panel to be judging...
@gudrodur2 it's a common thing in the Japanese language, especially the feminine Japanese language, "ureshii!" (so happy!) or "umai!" (delicious!) is repeated to show gratitude for the meal.
I see this show on tv. In Latin America it's aired by Sony Entertainment Television, but the music it's different. Does the food channel airs some kind of Americanized version of this show? (i hate when in the US they change the music of a show, kinda like they did with Dragon Ball Z and probably every other anime)
Yes, and that was 8 years ago. (I think the figure is in the Wikipedia write-up for IC.) Abalone diving is legal again off the west coast of the US, but it is very strictly regulated. I've seen people busted by the game wardens.
LOL...About 15 years ago, an ounce of tuna sashimi in Japan cost an average of $11.00 dollars (Yes...US dollars). Food in Japan is a [very] expensive.
I found myself wondering if he was conservative on purpose... there was that potential challenger up there in the stands watching his every move, he may have been trying to get one up on that guy. ;)
if i am iron chef
1. abalone ceviche, with shirmp, squid, octopus, onino, celintro, lime juice
2. long abalone strips, wrapped on a stick, wrapped with bacon, x2, grilled, brush on liver paste mixed with soy n sirchuran cock sauce, n sugar
3. deef fried abalone, double breaded, toss in hot wing sauce
4. grilled abalone w. sake, butter, seasalt
5. abalone soup, w. kelp, mixed sea food and dikon, safforn, truffles, and lots of MSG
judges will love me for my last dish, yea!

i dont think it was morimoto being orthodox, its more of morimoto losing his touch that day.

I am an abalone diver in Northern California. I got a limit on April 1, 2008 and I like it sauted with shitake mushrooms and a lobster sauce glaze.

Rofl!
I know my Abalone stats.
In part (4 of 5) I guessed $10,000.
And I got it right, lol.

Man, that Photographer Judge Kanoh (the first one) was brutal with the Iron Chef.. sort of an @$#! - you think he has something against Morimoto?
Interesting outcome. I thought it was going that direction. Interesting that seaweed soup could go that far.
