Or it could be an incredibly vague reference to this: when Fox takes too much damage, he loses a wing or two. Fire is seen from the sides of the Arwing. Since Fire Fox is a last ditch effort to get back into the fight, it could refer to Fox's Arwing being on fire during a desperate fight.

Maybe. But I think that the Firefox was inspired by the boost and his B> has something to do with that "boost" in meteo. Don't know how to describe it but it takes you to another route through a weird parallel dimension or something like that when you go trough all rings.

You can't say any of Fox's or Falco's moves came from a particular game or reference it because they didn't. They were just made up to fit the character's bakground. A legitimate game would be starfox assault but that was released way after Melee.
