I never really saw much of what Longhorn was supposed to look like but it looks nothing like Vista - sooo much better than Vista. Its a shame it got canned and they went with Vista. Windows Longhorn was the working name for Windows Vista back then. This was an actual milestone build of Longhorn back then.

It was a planned released after XP but in 2004-2005, the development was reset because they realized they did not have a clear focus on the actual end-product. They had referred it to the Cairo project back in the 1990s which was also a failure.

So they started building off coding that eventually was Windows Server 2003 SP1. Windows Vista was released a few years later.

Honestly, while all the visual effects like the login screen and the My Documents were AWESOME, the actual GUI was pretty ugly in Longhorn IMO. Those blue windows were pretty ugly to me, and the taskbar was bland. The start menu was pretty disjointed, too, without any clear borders between sections.

In short I think that while Longhorn had some badass effects, the GUI as a whole in Vista looks leagues better.

Ok, well my sister is currently switching back to XP, as is my dad, and many of my friends are too. I myself decided to go ubuntu 8.04, mac os x 'leopard', and XP (I got rid of vista) and at first I wasn't sure what to think about os x, I wasn't keen on the interface either at first, but now I love it, and I think the interface is better... but none of this really matters to the point I was making, it doesn't matter which OS is better, the point is that windows 7 is going to look like a mac.
