  • God imagine your waking up after a messy night out in Weymouth... and you open the curtain to find a Class 66 at your window, The driver notices your gazing at the loco, MEGA TONE!!!!!!!!!! Thats how it should be ;) lol

  • Now the Quay branch is being closed, how about a couple of specials this Summer to send off in style? Sad times for Weymouth Quay 2011.

  • Definitely needs a bell on the loco. And possibly a cowcatcher.

  • Even trains get lost.

  • @mcgherkinstudios Almost reminds me of the secene in The Titfield Thunderbolt where the engine goes down the street!

  • @Inkyminkyzizwoz Can't say that I've seen it :(

  • @mcgherkinstudios Someone has actually uploaded it onto here - it's a great film!

  • a smaller engine mi thinks. With a bloke waving a red flag and ringing a bell.

  • Just a FYI, the class 73 locos like this were electro-diesels, capable of running from 3rd rail electricity supply, or they also have a small diesel engine to enable running on non-electrified lines.

  • this is a first for me, yes iv seen trams doing this but never a br diesel, could you imagine royal scots grey doing that , i would come down especially from gateshead in the north east to see that, what a site that would be, thanks for vid

  • fake! the sunshine in Weymouth gives it away ;o) nice vid

  • do u know when the next train goes over thoes rails?

becuase i would love to go see it

  • Quite possible never, it's a very rare sight to see any loco's on a tramway. But still we can hope...

  • I was on holiday back in 74 and it was always a great event for us to see a train going down the high street.Makes me wonder what the Health & Safety would think??.great video

  • the sound was the 73s going over a set of points withs slowmotian flange wearing lol

  • what were the sounds between 2:12 and 2:46

i assume because it is concrete insted of metal

  • I guess slow motion flange-scraping, possibly, as you suggested, given an extra resonance by the surrounding concrete.

  • See that lady pick something up off the rails @ 1:38? Bet that was a few coins lol.

  • What a fantastic video!! Must have took some organisation..must have been a strange sight to see this monster on the streets of Weymouth!! Especially on the tramway..unbelieveable!! Was it a special tour?

  • Yes - it was a Pathfinders Tour

  • Great. Just come back from Weymouth on holiday.

noticed all the track is still intacted. What's the plan for the Quay line?

  • I think that there are possible plans, which may have stalled due to financial situation, for a hotel and retail complex near the old ferry terminal. If successful they might have incorporated the tramway in the project....but I may be wrong!

  • @wellowvids Apparently in February 2009 the Council agreed to purchase it from Network Rail for £50,000 because the latter confirmed they didn't want to keep it, but some people want it to be retained for the 2012 Olympics to transport people to and from the sailing events there.

  • Unfortunately I believe the council want to get rid of the tracks by either pulling them up or paving over them. It's a shame as I think a tram would have been a nice idea.

  • oops, thanks to the excellent videos of wolfywill I now correct: third rail from Weymouth (nothing like a bit of research^^)

  • Good video, captures the "event"-atmosphere well, 138 looking smart in Dutch livery. 73's are an inspired choice for the trip, since they can benefit from third rail juice from somewhere around Southampton.

  • was that woman in the yellow top doing the 'penny on the track' trick?

  • Yup - apparently so!

  • penny on the track? please explain

  • Very literal - put a coin on the line & get a loco to flatten it! The old pre-decimal pennies were an ideal size. When I was a kid I used to have coins flattened by Bournemouth Belle-pulled Merchant Navies etc. They were't any use for platform ticket machines after that though! I wouldn't recommend the practice in today's faster, quieter railways!

  • ooh sounds like an idea... I live very close to the SVR and am working there soon so will try it because they have a few interesting ones visiting atm. =] thanks

  • What an amazing video into the past of Weymouth. I have only lived here for three years but would have loved to have seen this for real. Sad to hear the tracks are being removed!

  • that must have been f**king mayhem

  • Thanks for posting, a brilliant vid!! Such a shame that the tramway is no longer in use, I would have loved to have travelled on it, better still, driven a train on it!! I remember a trip there in the early 1970's, and an 03 or 04 diesel shunter was shunting black oil tanks, fuel for the ferry perhaps??

  • Now that YouTube offers HQ and HD would it be possible to re-upload this? I presume it was recorded on an analoge video camera 10 years ago? If you upload at 480x360 or above, I think that triggers HQ availability. If it's uploaded at 1280x720 then HD becomes available.

A sight we'll surely not see again. I read that some numpties want it pulled up because some other numpties fell off their motor scooters. It's only been there since 1865...

  • It was my first recording on my then new digitl camera. I'm not sure if I've still got the edited format on disk, if so I might upload it. I'm actually having uploading problems at the moment - each time it finishes uploading I get an "unexplained error" message which is more than a little frustrating!

  • Thats the dick heads at the HSE getting there way. I cant see any reason why the tracks cant stay. You dont hear of people falling off scooters in Sheffield/Manchester etc on the tram lines! It probably the thick 16 yr olds who ride around on L plates all the time who cant control there two wheeled hair dryers on wheels!!!!!!!

  • great vid, noticed the woman around 1:36 looks like she is picking up some squashed coins from the rail

  • Yes,she was. She must have put them down quite late as there were a lot of people milling around as the train approached!

  • never seen anything quite like this!

  • the line is still operational it is not officaly closed just they dont use it

  • Brings back memories of the 1970s with the class 33s with flashing beacon :)

  • Excellent stuff! This would appear to have been the final ever train to use the tramway, although when I was in Weymouth today, I walked most of its length, and it still seems to be in good condition.

  • Yes I don't think anything has been down the line since. There are rumours that it will be pulled up.

  • I'm actually quite surprised it hasn't happened already. I guess it'll be a shame to lose it, but the chances of anything ever using it again are extremely remote.

  • Apparently they might start using it again as part of transport links 4 da 2012 olympics

  • That's surprising - it doesn't lead anywhere near the new sailing centre, which is on Portland, and most spectators will surely find it far quicker to walk!!

  • I walkedall of it 6 days ago, Its in Ok Condition, Could run a Train down it

  • some time's it used as a carrige siding well it used to be back in 2006

  • What a fantastic find. I was recently telling a friend about how as a child, I was used to trains trundling along the street when I used to visit Weymouth. Thankyou for sharing this.

  • Superb. I wonder what the original video looks like - before it's been mangled by YT's 320x240 format. Is it on a website somewhere?

  • No - it's not on a separate website...yet. I'm in the process of setting up a Multiply site for my wildlife videos, mainly because several don't seem to be possible to upload to Youtube - light flares off water perhaps - and may extend it to railway videos, but it will take time. I'll show it as my website in due course.

  • Brilliant vid, well deserved 5 stars. I only ever saw one train one this branch, way back in 1970/71 a class 03 or 04 shunting black heavy oil tanks. So sad this line is no longer in use.

  • Excellent video there, good quality too. Would be great to see that today but its bound to be a violation for those health and safety wind bags!

  • I know! We can't do anything fun any more because some scaredy cats think we all need protecting!

  • Great video! Never thought I'd see a video of a train on this line, thanks for sharing!

  • Thanks!

  • wow i was just looking for some pictures of the Weymouth street running a few days ago and today i find this! Great video, this was the last piece of UK steetrunning, correct? shame its out of operation now, we still got a bit of streetrunning left in the US.

  • Thanks! I don't think any trains have been down the Quay since then. The last timetabled trains to the ferries were in 1987 and they were led down by a man with a red flag!

As Weymouth/Portland will be the centre for the sailing events in the 2012 Olympics I believe that there are plans put forward to rip up the tramway as part of tarting up the town's image!

  • What a top vid! It will probably never happen again because it's "too dangerous" or some such rubbish.

  • Thanks!

  • Derek,

I never thought that I'd see the day when a train would be guided by their very own police escort, now how cool is that!!!!And I thought that we were the only ones that did "streetrunning"....DANG WAS THIS ONE TOTALLY AWESOME VIDEO MAN!!!!;-D

    5 STARS & A FAV FROM ME!!!!U EARNED IT

    Bryan
