his poor mouth! :( if the corners of the horse's mouth are being pulled to his eyeballs there is SOMETHING WRONG. I don't care how eager they are to go forward. That's irrelevant! The question is WHY IS THE RIDER PULLING SO HARD ON THE REINS?
This horse is going on a gate called "flugskeið" or "pass" end is not being hurt at all, he is eager to go an go, people should try riding skeið before the judge something they have no idea about :)
Icelandics foam when they are happy and reconciled. It also helps with the bit, it gets all foamy and feels better against the inside of the horse's mouth
Secondly and most importantly, have you ever ridden Icelandics? they are very high spirited and eager to go forward, just try riding this pace before you criticize things you don't understand.
@McIcecreamers - They are ponys depending on there height, if they are under 14.2 if not then they are horses. I know an Icelandic that is 14.5 and he's a horse.
@Pattonsgirlforever Icelandics are actually horses no matter what size they are, there's no such thing as an Icelandic pony... shows how much you know...
@Pattonsgirlforever Are you stupid? It DOES NOT depend on height, they could be any height but will NEVER be ponies. Look it up on IHSGB (Icelandic Horse Society of Great Britain) website; there is no Icelandic word for 'pony'... show me your evidence, you obviously have much more experience than me
@753wow When you are speaking about all equines in the world height does distinguish the difference between a pony and a horse. 14.3 is the smallest horse, and 14.2 is the tallest pony. So there you go, now please don't resort to name calling..so childish.
@Pattonsgirlforever Firstly, it's not equines the world over, in Australia a pony is under 14hh. Secondly, there are always exceptions - Icelandics are horses, end of. Just like Falabellas, that are classed as minature horses, not ponies, even though they're so small. You have to face the fact that you're wrong. I also wasn't calling you any names, I just asked if you were stupid. What's childish is not admitting when you are quite clearly wrong.
@753wow - Wikipedia says "The general rule for height distinguishing between a horse and a pony at maturity is 14.2 hands (58 inches, 147 cm). An animal 14.2 h or over is usually considered to be a horse and one less than 14.2 h a pony.[28]" It also says "The distinction between a horse and pony is not simply a difference in height, but other aspects of phenotype or appearance, such as conformation and temperament" We are BOTH right, so no need to fight or say how I'm wrong. Good day.
@Pattonsgirlforever Surely you've just proven yourself wrong? Not only does it say height is a "general" rule and that the distinction is not "simply a difference in height," the same article says "Some breeds which typically produce individuals both under and over 14.2 h consider all animals of that breed to be horses regardless of their height." So no, we are not both right, I am right, you are wrong. And not only have I proved that, you've proved it yourself.
@753wow - You know what ? I really don't care what you think, I really do want to see if you can ride or not but wait, you dont have any videos. I'm not going to sit here and talk to you , your insulting me and I'm not taking your crap so good bye and I hope you can live with the annoying effect you have. I was trying to be nice by saying we were both right, considering what I said in the first place was right too, so stop saying I'm wrong and get a life. Good bye.
@jjbsportsyo Oh no is it exhausting for the horse? then we must bann it. we cant have that. How can we let a animal get exhausted. Lets bann sports for humen too.
Crazy that people actually do this!! I've never seen anything like it. It's cool to see how differently people do things and also the sport. I think it's pretty awesome : )
I'd want to do it if I could, I'm sure it's such a thrill when the horse gets up to those speeds!
He is riding with a curved bit. It's a gentle bit and it's curved 1-2cm at each end making it bend towards the rider. Many icelandic horses performing the flying pace take support from the bit to go fast and some have their mouths open (just look at race horses for example). If you look at the riders hands thay are very steady and gentle (I honestly can't see any yanking). The way the horse is holding his head is also completely natural for the gait.
Well, uhm, haven't read the whole discussion, but I actually ride icelandic horses several times each week, and I've tried flying pace. They do have their head up high
And for all of you who say "try it for yourself before you say anything and judge", oh, we have actually TRIED IT OURSELVES! Ever crossed your minds???That there is more to riding than competitions? That there is this things called horsemanship that so many of you obviously lack?
it is neccesary to kep the head this way up. Otherwise the horse will fall into the gallop means disqualifying. The goal is the flying pace and if u would have any idea how to get a horse into this pace u would now it would not work in a different way.. there is nothing harsh in this style of riding a horse..
okay.. i have to say that there are people among that ar enot very nice to their horses but u have to keep in mind that on most contests the holders of these horses try to show what they are able to do. Mostly for breeding success. how do u know that ur foal is going to be a good horse if u never saw the stallion in action?
yES, I know that your hands must be carried higher, I ride Icelandics among other horses but many riders, like the one shown here, are overdoing it and yanking on the horse's mouth. The horses I ride never open their mouth and look discontent like this one. It's not all about competition, it's about horse welfare.
ha... how would u call it when someone would put u into a small room and would just get u out to make sports with u? u call that welfare?
I ride iceland horses for more than 13 years and u tell me whats wrong and whats not? get clear inside ur head girl. or grow up and face the reality. there is not something like welfare. A horse is not made for carrying humans. so u could call this cruelty to animals. <<
Not at all, as there are also smooth and compassionate riders that like to keep their horses in open fields and not confined in small boxes. I know people who rider for more than 30 years and when they meet a whisperer they completely change their behaviour towards horses. Years of riding don't always give you wisdom. End of story.
doesnt that end up hurting the horse? sorry, but if I was that horse, I'd be so so sore after I was done.. or at the very least I would be happy it was over, and I wouldn't enjoy my work..
@winddy No it dosent hurt.. they have special bits in their mouth. the horse is perfectly fine and seriously my icelandic that paces enjoys it so much. we get her out on the track and all she wants to do is pace. so its NOT hurting them
You are right. A horse that opens its mouth and stretches its neck like this is a horse that is forced to do something. The point is for the horses to do this naturally and not for the satisfaction of people. Using your posture and your hands is different from abusing the horse and I actually ride an icelandic.
in my family we have iceland horses for more than 10 years and it is nessecary to get the horse up and concentrated.. it has to be like a elastic spring to get the speed. this is not a cruelty to animals. the horse wants to run but has to be held to keep the pace. so u should inform urself before saying something u have no idea of..
You started politely and then you ended up bitching about someone (me) YOU don't know! There is a difference between riding the horse "up", like you said, and overstretching his neck and mouth with harsh bits in order to get it to tolt in a flashy way. If you see no violence at all in some of these riders shown here, then you are the ignorant one.
What a pig of a rider. Hauling back on the reins till the horse's mouth is about to rip and his neck is overextended. Why do they do shit like that to gaited horses? That horse didn't look comfortable at all.
No it is not. Ifg you rode Icelanic horses you would know that the 'flying pace' is Exceptionally smooth. But you need VERY good stamina to keep it up lol.
That's amazing! But I have to say I kind of giggled a little.
