  • The young girl is named Foteini Papaleonidopoulou and grew up in a SOS Children's Village in Greece. She was an excellent student and this year she got a scholarship to study Medicine in America. She is volunteer in Special Olympics and Doctors of the World. (source: Vima). I'm sure all Greeks feel proud about her!!!

  • "Ladies and gentlemen, the athletes' final entrance"

    *fireworks*

    EPIC.

  • Despite de critics and delays, on august 13, 2004, Athens and Greece gave to the world and unforgetable dream, a celebration of humanity, on sport...Just the best!!!

  • Is there as way that I can listen to THIS particular version of the song in its entirety?? ANYWHERE?? I already saw the only version of this song with on youtube with a lady singing lyrics and all, but I would love a lyric-less version of this beautiful song?

    Thanks

  • what is the song when the frame putoff?

  • @nextrender as medic1979 said it's "μητέρα και αδερφή" which means "mother and sister" by Manos Hatzidakhs.

  • where's part 1?

  • do you know if I can find the part of the closing ceremony that had the montage of the games?

  • I am an overseas Greek-Cypriot born and living in the UK.

I remember watching this at the time, when that little girl says "I hope to see you again, Kali Antamosi" then blew the flame out, my heart broke and I burst into tears. It was so emotional, I dont know if I will ever see the Olympics return home to Greece in my life time, but that moment will stay with me forever... Greeks always know a way to touch the heart...

I am and always will be so proud to be Greek!

    Bravo Ellada mou S'agapo!

  • THE BEST GAMES EVER in the whole olympic games history!!!

  • i am part greek living here for the most of my life! remember ...like the ancient greek philosophers taught us life is lived in it's simple things! i know we modern greeks lost the touch with our heritage, however this doen't make the essence of the meaning less important !!! be truthful to who u are, have respect and practice ethos (from the greek meaning ethics) throughout ur life

    Kali antamosi filoi mou !

its from the great greek composer Hadjidakis - and the album's name is "I epochi tis Mellisanthis". I don't know the name of the song, but I can send it to you if you want (I have a version with lyrics though)

  • it's greek composer Hadjidakis but I can't remember the title of the song

  • I loved the way the flame was extinguished here: have its light passed on to everyone so that it may live with everyone even as the torch goes out.

  • WHERE IS THE PART 1?

  • Thank you very much. I'll search it.

P.S.: I saw you like Madonna, have you been to her concert in Athens?

  • LOL...of course.

    How could i miss it?

  • hahah.

I saw her in Rio. It was amazing.

Now, I imagine how did you feel enjoying a Madonna concert at the Olympic Stadium.

About the song in the video, do you have it or do you know where can I download it?

    Thanks!

  • Ok!

  • No question about it. The Bejing Games were too overwhelmingly orchestrated and didn't have the theatricality and simple humanity of the Glorious ATHENS OLYMPICS 2004--THE BEST!...They should have the Games in Athens every 4 years; they belong to Athens! Thank you!

  • The music is by Manos Hatzidakis! a great Greek composer!

  • listen to the music of the fire.......!!!look at the little girl.........and remember these fantastic moments

!!!!!!!!i'll never forget the best olympics ever!!!!!!!!!! athens 2004!!!!!!!!!

  • I don't understand why so many people are so quick to claim one ceremony is "better" than another. Why can't these ceremonies all be appreciated individually for the messages and emotions that they evoke? It's really unfair to weight one against another.

  • Oh God, almost 4 years passed and I still cry when I look at that. The best Games ever, I will never forget. I love Greece, love the Olympics. Athens 2004 meant soooo much for me, such an emotion.

  • que tristy

  • what is that thing she holding near the torch

  • isws oi shmantikoteres stigmes ths sughronhs Elladas

  • Es la música más hermosa que he escuchado. Alguien puede decirme donde conseguirla?

  • It's Manos Xatzidakis (the composer). The name song is "mother and sister".

  • Suddenly I'm so proud to have been born in the place that the Olympics were born. Our history and culture shines throught in this ceremony. :)

  • thanks for the memories Greece......Thanks

  • by far more emotional than the chinese closing ceremony

  • i like chinas it was artistic but athens take peoples's hearts.

  • I almost forget the beautiful ceremoney the Athens had. The girl blew off the flam like candle. It's emotional~~~

  • sad

  • when you have 1.3 Billion pop. You can find 1.8 million volunteers with ease... After all we are talking about the Chinese, a people who were never in their history free, they never had a elected leader on their head. They went straight from thousands of years of cruel monarchy, to rightwing dictatorship, and from there to communism. They were never tought the meaning of "free thinking" ( at least by their leaders )

  • i don't think so.i am a chinese.and i think you just don't understand the national condition of china.there's 1.3billion people who have different education ,and how can we elect a leader like americans do?the money the candidates used on their elections is a waste.

  • beijing did a very great job on hosting the olympic 2008..! where can u find 1.8 million of ppl to volunteer n yet did such a remarkable show for billions of ppl from all over the world ? tw, don't look down on the capabilities of china.

  • Manos Hatzidakis and his great music (from 1:40 till the end) is more human and amazing than the chinese technology.

In the simplest is the beauty.

  • mipws 3ereis apo pu mporw na vrw avti ti musiki an iparxei se kapio cd?m aresei para poli...

  • jamaica is the new olympic sprint champ

    and

china is a new overall olympic champ

    awesome.

  • are u serious? china was AMAZING...they got soo many people involved and it was soo artistic! it was really touching at the end..lool come on..Jackie chan singing, it was all magical.

  • mipws 3erete pios egraye avto to kommati?einai poli wraia mousiki.

  • I'm watching Beijing's right now.

  • The Olympic Games are over man...the Games are where people compete not the OC and CC. Pointless for the Greeks and CHinese to blindly support their own OC and CC to say theirs is the best. The ceremonies are to bring out the Games' spirit and even the hosts' culture. Both sides did magnificent.

  • China could not possibly be better!!!This is the beauty, the authenticity!!!THE REAL THING!!!GREAT GREEK CELEBRATION!!!I watch china!!!Worst than their opening!!!!THE ONLY GOOD PART WAS THE GREAT PLACIDO DOMINGO,NOTHING ELSE!!!STUPID BORING CEREMONY!!!OUST!!!

  • Δημήτρη Παπαϊωάννου, είσαι πολύ μεγάλος... ΣΕ ΕΥΧΑΡΙΣΤΟΥΜΕ ΓΙΑ ΟΛΑ...

  • Edwse resital o anthrwpos kai oi sunergates tou toso stin teleth liksis oso kai enarkshs.

  • One breath unite us all

  • greece is amazing!!

  • u are confused mb some of u. Its not about the show in the olymbics in OC and CC its about the meaning of the word "ceremony" cmon. Ppl get excited when they see fireworks lights lazzorz, if a country can top the feelings that athens oc cc gave us then...

  • see you in london 2012!

  • (sniffles)

  • Wow, I don't know if Beijing's closing ceremony/distinguishing of the flame can top this!

  • who tops it is besides the point. yet since you noted it, Beijing's can DEFINITELY top this. just look at their opening ceremony. i think for many olympics to come, beijing's will be the best

    well done beijing

  • Well, Beijing's closing ceremony was really really outstanding but it DEFINITELY did not top this! Both ceremonies(Beijing/Athens) were breathtaking and i think more great shows are about to come.

  • sure Beijing was wonderful .nobody doubts it

but Athens was poetic, emotional and talked

about human issues and true essence of life.

    Welldone China!

  • kangakucha, the little girl, in this ceremony, was 10 years old, she is a baby , who don´t have parents, i don´t know how i said "HUERFANA" in english, now, she´s 14 years old like my girlfriend, her name is Fotini Papaleonidopoulou, she´s a beautifull young girl, and she has a good future, i fell bad for her parents (where are their minds?), but i never will know What think the people? :S

  • ive already seen one of the closing ceremonies dances to beijing 2 years ago on a chinese television show (cuz im chinese) but its goin to b AMAZING!

  • hope to see you again....to greece

  • i can't remember her name but she is a girl that she is protected by an organization in greece for kids who had lost their parents...

  • everything is so beautiful there!

  • the last part was so moving

  • does anyone know the name of the little girl on the ballon at the 2004 olympic closing ceremory? I;m trying to find out if she was again in the opening ceremory of the Beijing 2008 games, but I;m having no luck.

  • idiot usa shut up

  • what did they say at the end?

    kaliendamus?

  • The girl is holding a lantern, which she lights with the olympic flame so as to preserve it after it's blown out.

As for the final words, it's "kali antamosi" which could be translated more or less as "be well till we meet again".

  • how come the latern seems to be lighted without touching the flame??

anyway the closing ceremony is touching. wonder how Beijing2008 will end it

  • because it's just symbolic

  • they say "kali antamosi" in greek, which means "hope to see you again"...

  • GREEKS ARE SO BEAUTIFUL...

  • it is kinda sad, but i understand you Eohmer, greece is responsible for the olympiads and thats why every parade of nations its first. you're english wasnt bad it was really good.

as for what the little girl is holding i think its like a flicker of the light since she kinda raised it when it came down and the trick of when she blew it to turn it off, ah! touching.

  • I'm crying

  • what is that little girl holding?

  • that was f-ing awesome

  • china had a very beatifull ceremony,my gratz!!!but as a greek i cant compare it with ours at athens.you see we have imotion differences.the olympic spirit is in our vains,we live for our culture, history and civil.china is just the guest like all the cities that the fleme goes.greece is the birth country and we are the children of it.china make us proud with your hospitality and your good work.sorry for my horrible english

  • sniff sniff

  • i love how they turn off the gas. modern times!

  • thank you for your video, bring back so many good memory from 2004.

  • do they always put out the olympiad fire every closing ceremony or they leave the flame on??

i always dreaming they put the flame out, it would be a great ceremonial as the cauldron lighting from the olympic torch.

  • tha ta plirones etsi kai allios ama thelei na arpaxei o allos ta arpazei kai xoris olympiakoys agones :-)

  • Greece, saved the free world at Platea (however you spell it), gave birth to the Olympic games, gave us this amazing ceremony, and damn can they make good epic music! Congrats on over three thousand years of accomplishments!!

  • thanks my friend

  • Athen was by far the best.

  • dont hate on beijing...china has been planning for years! dont assume....Im waiting for Chinaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!

  • the best ever i was soooo mooved greece is da beeeeeest

  • Any Olympics Games´ll be like then Athens. !!

Greeks knew excactlly how to blow us away.

    and they did it.. !!

Athens 2004´ll be the best 4 ever. !

  • ήταν τέλεια...είχα πάει και πραγματικά ένιωσα περήφανη...ήταν οι πιο τέλειοι ολυμπιακοί αγώνες...μπράβο μας..

  • Bravo.

  • I was there and I was about to start crying her voice was amazing and everything was wonderful around...The Olympic Games were fantastic in 2004 I am sure Olympic Games in Beijing will not be that successful..

  • ...The Beijing Games are still 39 days away, you can't possibly say that.

  • why do you say that? kinda arrogant aren't you?

  • I am not arrogant at all!I am not that satisfied from the opening ceremony..All this crowd, the lazers don't suitthe Olympic Games..It's confusing and tiring..Thats my opinion..!

  • i always cry when i watch the closing ceremony, i never want the olympics to finish

  • I don't cry... But I thought I was the only one who never wanted it to end...

  • no you are not

  • i agree too.Greece should host the olympics forever-as everything started from here-but there are plenty cities of Greece that could host them as well, such as Thessaloniki,i wish but im ok just with Athens..or we could have the olympics every 8/12 years..or have all the preolympic tournaments..i just wonna have what i own..if youre not Greeks you cant understand..when they came BACK in their motherland although i was only 11,5years old,i was so moved-happy that i had the chance to see them back

  • something that great must be shared

  • excelente, simplemente excelente. las mejores olimpiadas junto con sidney

  • see you later...

  • Man, it is hard to say which Olympics was the best. I'm only 19 (b. 1989) and I love Olympic festivities. My faves are Atlanta, Los Angeles, Sydney, Salt Lake, and this one Athens.

    Well done Athens. Well done!!!

  • she got banned from playing in china after this

  • Magic music from the incredible composer Mano Xadjidaki!!!!

  • I agree i wish athens host the olympics for ever. !!

  • Good closing ceremony. This games was one of the best summer olympic games in the history.

  • OLYMPICS should be held for ever in GREECE!!

  • what is this beautiful music?

  • my friend it's music by Greek composer

    Manos Hadjidakis!

    It's called night walk..

He is the greatest greek composer

  • i don´t want that Beijing host the 2008 olympics. .

i want it back to Athens, Greece

  • i don´t want that Beijing host the 2008 olympics. .

i want it back to Athens, Greece

  • yeah...who would have thought that the olypic torch was an invention by Hitler and not the ancient greeks? Propaganda at its best.

  • ..the torch was met by the Nazis but the idea of the burning fire throughout the Games comes from ancient Greece.not everything the Nazis did was awful.

    do not be biased.

  • GeoArabas: Oh,Iam sorry. I guess I am missing the point that the games were used by Hitler to lure exactly the same kind of people like yourself....naiv idiots who thought "its not all bad...as long as I am not the one burning in Auschwitz"....

  • beautiful!

  • beautiful! we hope this flame will light again in Greece

  • i love greece

  • an economic crime it is but it is a tradition that we must honor.

  • We? Who's We?

Who ever got paid, let him honor it

Crimes must be punished, not honored

  • you are disguasting! IT WAS OUR HONOUR TO HOST THE OLYMPICS! AND YES,I WISH THE OLYMPICS WERE ALWAYS HOSTED IN ATHENS! GREECE IS THE ORIGINAL COUNTRY OF THEM ANYWAY..ancient Greeks..remember them lot?
