And of course the people are the reason for anything that defines a culture, including its religions, however, the practice of anthropomorphizing everything is definately religious in its origin. The 'cuteness' is subjective and a side effect relating to the needs of marketing, the aesthetics of design and the very nature of anthropomorphism. Also bear in mind that Shinto is from ancient animism and shamanism
