Disaster capitalism or Croney Capitalism, orCorporatism, is at war with Free market Capitalism, freemarket capitalism calls for no interference from government, Disaster Capitalism depends on government and the military industrial complex or natural disasters with government interference to reach its ends,it degenerates into remodeling cultures to be compliant and be good consumers.
This is repugnant and a distortion about what friedman's ideas are all about ! There's no such thing as a free lunch! Friedman never advocated torture and totalitarianism but was a champion of freedom. Shock therapy did work in economics ,look at Chile, Poland,Germany in 48', Bolivia...what's irresponsible is for governments to spend more than their revenues and to use the printing press and hyperinflation. To quote him " Capitalism is a necessary condition for freedom but not a sufficient one "
@hamzyboy It seems to me Friedman watched Chile closely under shock therapy. Also seems to have been behind it, Milton's ideas were great but his applications were ad-hoc and forever harmed the image of free market capitalism by depicting fascism and military fascism as if it were free market. Disgraceful, but just like Greenspan sold his austrian economic soul to the Fed, Milton sold his to his own ideological nemesis; government. Glad to see not everyone falls for this piece of propaganda.
In the late 50's the CIA had secret brainwash project code named MKUltra. They paid a Dr Cameron in Montreal to carry it out. He injected LSD Mixed with other drugs, Massive electric shocks and weeks of sleep as a brain wash tape played. It was horrific. I am telling my story on You Tube called youkilledyourmother
Here ideas are a joke... Do you realize that all but three countries (north Korea Laos Cuba) have privatized their economies in some way?
She cherry picks her examples of privatizations.
Sweden her ideal society is privatizing Banks Pharmaseuticals and the Stock Market. Ranks 64 out of 174 in economic freedom...Its apart of the worlds largest free trade zone the EU.
China which she views as a Neo-lib paradise ranks 132 out of 174 countries in economic freedom.
The method is correct, however the definition of disaster capitalism is not. More like disaster government subsidized corporate welfare. This is forced socialism not free market capitalism.
And China, Iraq and Chile were only good guys before there liberation of the economy? In the beginning of her book she says torture follow with market liberation. I know for a fact that it were torture in all of this countrys before tuff capitalism came to them.
Unbelievable. So, capitalism didn't exist in America unit Sept 11, 2001. In the UK, even though Adam Smith published in 1776, capitalism didn't begin until the Falklands War? Communist revolutions murdered millions and prevented democracy. Marxist double think is remarkable. There's a reason Westerners aren't flocking to Russia en masse. People's Socialist Republics failed miserably on their own, and Klein holds them up as the answer. No doubt the Left will make this required reading.
tier0008: You have to forgive the people from the USA. They have been deluded by the media for about 50 years. They have been conditioned to wince whenever they hear the word "socialism" or "communism". Basically, the USA inhabitants have not the faintiest idea about the content of those terms. They dont know what life outside USA is alike. The kind of "freedom" people in the USA have is to choose a brand. Thats whats freedom is in their mind.
@jkirk1626 You should read it. Perhaps the most suprizing part of The Shock Doctrine is the bibliography. Its really extensive, and contains a lot of de-classified CIA documents.
Is The Shock Doctrine biased? ya, a bit. She leaves out the reason all of those countries got into financial crisis in the first place, But don't think is condemning free enterprise. She simply documented how "free enterprise" was used to steal.
@jkirk1626 Communism was never at war with Capitolism. Thats propaganda. Communism has always been at war with predatory imperialism pretending to be democracy.
@jkirk1626 "So, capitalism didn't exist in America" No. Predatory exploitation and propagandized consumerism did. And exported to third world countries was military and covert support for dictatorships and death squads to maximize US business interests.
America's freedom is brought on by one perosn: the President. Freedom, like many other moral principles, is relative; if one PERCEIVES allowing corrupt corporations to manipulate and dictate who makes and purchases their products/services, then it could be considered freedom. HOWEVER, let us not confuse this scenario with democracy, for democracy, too, is freedom, but on a different level. Only if a strong majority of the citizens of a country believe a certain thing can it be called democracy!!
prices are also a way to control the population, since prices can trigger revolution; why is it that we want money? since money is debt? we need to view of money, in the real light that it is; not as a goal but as a means to exchange. the british empire was built on the "tally stick", what makes everyone think we cannot live without the dollar??
oh vinkata,I'm sorry for you,and for your political ignorance, but all is real.Go and live free in U.S.A...the best "only, big, antidemocratic, democracy" in the world.ahahah
What is that all about. You are crazy. Friedman, the father of the free society involve in shock :))) You really don't know what you are talking about. Go and live free in Cuba or N Korea.
So you are saying that Klein has no basis in fact? Do you refute her research? Please make yourself clearer.. You don't feel society is being manipulated in anyway?
Society can't exist without manipulation. Just having laws backed by punishment is already a way of manipulating people to behave. Think religion as well.
The idea to change or convert people on their weakest moments is nothing new. I think this link between free market ideology using shock methods is kind of farfetched.

I think the Shock Doctrine is true; however, to think it is just used by the right/capitalist is just global elitist propaganda at it's finest.
