This is repugnant and a distortion about what friedman's ideas are all about ! There's no such thing as a free lunch! Friedman never advocated torture and totalitarianism but was a champion of freedom. Shock therapy did work in economics ,look at Chile, Poland,Germany in 48', Bolivia...what's irresponsible is for governments to spend more than their revenues and to use the printing press and hyperinflation.To quote him " Capitalism is a necessary condition for freedom but not a sufficient one "

@hamzyboy It seems to me Friedman watched Chile closely under shock therapy. Also seems to have been behind it,  Milton's ideas were great but his applications were ad-hoc and forever harmed the image of free market capitalism by depicting fascism and military fascism as if it were free market. Disgraceful, but just like Greenspan sold his austrian economic soul to the Fed, Milton sold his to his own ideological nemesis; government. Unbelievable. So, capitalism didn't exist in America unit Sept 11, 2001. In the UK, even though Adam Smith published in 1776, capitalism didn't begin until the Falklands War? @jkirk1626 You should read it. Perhaps the most suprizing part of The Shock Doctrine is the bibliography. Its really extensive, and contains a lot of de-classified CIA documents.

Is The Shock Doctrine biased? ya, a bit. She leaves out the reason all of those countries got into financial crisis in the first place, But don't think is condemning free enterprise. She simply documented how "free enterprise" was used to steal.

America's freedom is brought on by one perosn: the President. Freedom, like many other moral principles, is relative; if one PERCEIVES allowing corrupt corporations to manipulate and dictate who makes and purchases their products/services, then it could be considered freedom. HOWEVER, let us not confuse this scenario with democracy, for democracy, too, is freedom, but on a different level. Society can't exist without manipulation. Just having laws backed by punishment is already a way of manipulating people to behave. Think religion as well.

The idea to change or convert people on their weakest moments is nothing new. I think this link between free market ideology using shock methods is kind of farfetched.
