  • Thank you Chappers, this video was awesome!

  • is there any diffrence between diatonic modes and regular or are all modes diatonic?

  • great video man! thanks a loooooooot ;)

  • This is literally the single most helpful lesson on this subject that I have found on youtube. Thank you so much Chappers!

  • man....how did you make that squeeky sound at 0:26 on the 6th string...I'm playing guitar for 1 week so don't take ma as a noob 'cause that's what I am :D

  • @ghigaful There called pinch harmonics.

  • @ESPLTDSMITHY I've got it...but I can do tem at 1,2 and 3...4 a little harder, but 5 and 6 are like hell :(

  • Ionian: 1:36

    Dorian: 2:16

    Phrygian: 2:55

    Lydian: 3:35

    Mixolydian: 4:35

    Aeolian: 5:30

    Locrian: 6:18

  • Can somebody help me? He shows the first position for all the scales, 5 position/ 3 note per string 7 position style, but how can you work out the other positions from watching this video? Thanks

  • Searching for MONTHS for something like this THANK YOU.

  • I Like that!!!!!

  • Very nice video there chappers, it beats trying to learn these out of a book. Just one quam ... You could have used a guitar with fret markers!

    That is all

    Thank you again

  • Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of the 5 shape method and the 7 shape one-per-mode method? Like is one better than the other for certain styles of music or something?

  • can you do one of these lessons on harmonic minor scales.

  • you are just fucking awesome...!!

  • DUDE big fan, your personality is sick and your playing is incredible- great job keep kicking ass!

  • very nice lesson, defiantly hear the different sound of each mode

    Good, very good lesson

  • thanks rob

  • hey Chappers,

If i wanted to play these scales in other keys, i would just have to move the scale pattern to the note on the low E?? or am i totally messing everything up?? thanks :) greeting from Ottawa, Canada :)

  • Tabs? That would help :(

  • Comment removed

  • thanks rob this helped alot :) \m/

  • is it just my or do the lydian 3 note per string and the 5 scale method sound really different (could just be me being a dick :P)

  • which type of modes would you reccommend for shredding rob?, the3 note per string or 5 scale method?

  • what means diatonic?

  • Rob, You've hit on the thing about modes that confused me for years. Namely, if you present each mode, as music teachers and textbooks do, with each mode beginning on a different root note, it seems modes are like the 8-note scale keys. Example: Ionian begins on the root note of C, Dorian - begins at the root note of D, etc. That made me crazy for years. You teach all 7 modes from the A root, and that makes clear the tonal differences, the distinctive "sound," of each mode. Two thumbs up!!!

  • That descending 6th run is torture Chappers! If you reply you're just gonna say practise and I have been! I got it from your Circle of Doom lick and it's just not gonna happen, so I'm keeping it slow!

  • Wish you were my instructor when I learned the modes years and years ago. All I got was here ya go, figure it out yourself!

  • very very useful

  • Which amp are you playing through? Is it a JCM 800?

  • Do you prefer doing the three note per string method, or the 5 scale method?

  • I LOVE THIS SORT OF STUFF !!! Brilliant !!

  • the dorain sound like it should resolve on G why is that?

  • @ifu06572 because the second note in g is A....hence A dorian would be playing the g major scale from the second note which is A.

  • My Eyes start moving like the slot machines in Vegas when you speed those modes up :D

  • when u r shredding that fast, r u picking every note or using hammer ons and pull offs?

  • very nice.. i'm going to go annoy my family by practising these heaps :P oh and can you please do this type of tutorial video for the Harmonic Minor scale?

  • 5 shape pentatonic type modes...hmmm, been playing for 20 years and never thought to try that out. Thanks Chappers! As usual, you rock.

  • a little box that shows tabs could really help. but otherwise awesome!

  • Thanks for the free lessons. I have such a man crush.

  • hey i am new to guitar playing and beginner. is it essential to learn those scales and do they help me when improvising a solo?

  • Chappers you are an amazing player, I live in the US and am addicted to your videos. Your pick hand technique is flawless can you do a video about how you can build up your picking ability ie: finger picking as well. Keep up the videos and Rock on.

  • everyone detests locrian ;) it's alright rob

  • Thank you so much for this video. Makes me really wish I didn't live an ocean away so I can take lessons in person.

  • Comment removed

  • absolutely brilliant. you have show me more in 8 minutes. then i have learned in 19 years of playing. the 2 so called music teachers could not show me that. and that my friend is why i call myself a video lesson student. and i agree locrian mode sucks. anyway you are the man keep the videos and lesson coming

  • what modes are used in classical music?

  • @Killconiey All of them my friend ;-)

  • @Killconiey if you mena neoclassical like yingwei there are 3 parent scales major melodic minor and harmonic minor best way too star with classical is too play harmonic minor and its ,odes like phrigian dominant and diminished scales are also handy

  • Your the man Chappers

  • I'm not really a lead player, more ryhthm, but I feel that getting all this stuff down properly will just improve my playing in general. Now it's not learning the scales that I have trouble with, and I can get them up to quite a fast pace after a few days practice, but I find it extremely confusing which scales and modes can be played with which chords and stuff like that. If by 'Modal Application' you mean what I just explained, it looks like I'm going to have to buy the DVD? ;)

  • Rob,

Very nice lesson. However, I really would like to see practical application of the modes in a guitar solo. Something along the lines of: the key is A, the background chord is D (or whatever) so I can play the such and such mode (please enumerate all valid modes with a demo of the effect on the quality of the sound); next the chord changes to E (or whatever) and now I can play the such and such mode etc. I think this would be a very useful demo (hell I mignt even pay for it).

  • great lesson, got me to learn alot of scales my old teacher could never get me to xD

also something that keeps bothering me(especially while doing this) what is the best thing to do with the other 3 fingers you're not using. I've been told different things are better to have more control/play faster

  • Hey Mr. Chappers - TTK here. Nice video. I'm always looking for new licks for my own reviews, and you never fail to impress. Thx buddy!

  • Very cool, any chance at Guitar Pro tab downloads to go with it?

  • damn i wish i had you as my teacher learning goes faster with you than my teacher

  • Thanks Chappers, I will be learning this with the aid of my brand new Charvel So-cal.

    Cheers mate, love your vids

  • @maxwellthedog Awsome guitar.

  • Nice video.

    That's Interesting.

    Continue scales yeah.

  • Seeing your guitars getting visibly worn from love and use unlike a posers' "reliced" guitar makes me smile.

  • Rocks!!! And the guitar rocks too! ;)

  • dude you are a genius

  • Awesome lesson Monkey Lord.

  • Nice lesson, Robster! I also learned the three-note system but not the Pentatonic shape format, I guess it should be my next target, eh? I always play the modes up the neck as my warm up. A quick little mnemonic I came up with for the modal scales: The major modes: Mixolydian, Ionian and Lydian (M.I.L.itary) and the minor modes: Phrygian, Aeolian, Dorian and Locrian (P.A.D.Loc) Hope this helps somebody out there as much as your vids do. :)

  • i thought each scale had five different shapes

  • YOUR SUCH A SICK AS FUCK GUITARIST ROCK ON CHAPPERS \M/ MONKEY LORD\M/

  • @hyperdude16 Ha ha thanks mate ;-)

  • @RobChappers Hyperdude16 seems to live his name fully.

  • Chapper's lessons are the best!:D Is the Subway Bandit gonna do song lessons while you do lessons on fundamental guitar technique? Also if I made a tab for the scales would you post it in the info?

  • dorian reminds me of top gear tbh the intro, i'd love to see chappers cover that:)

  • why do u detest locrian?

  • awesome rob.. thanks for sharing this with us :D

  • thank you chappers. i am going to take these modes and use them to rule the world of modal playing. question: how do u move ur fingers so fast man? any tips/super secrative secrets?

  • Comment removed

  • can't wait till the dvd comes out, it's alot easier to learn from the way you teach than some other guys \m/

  • What is your quarter note tempo at 7:54 to 7:58? And are you playing six notes per beat then (sextuplets)?

  • @massif20022000 No idea on the tempo, Can someone measure it for me? Butyes I am using six notes per beat ;-)

  • right chap-man whats the overdrive pedal of choice? and maybe your jvm eq settings for this video? keep rockin

  • @uomoscozzese I actually just purchased a hardwire overdrive which I love - I don't normally buy anything so this is a profound statement ;-)

  • Hey rob thanks for the new videos !! I was wondering if I could put a request in for a lesson . I bought your "Red Dream" album and was wondering if you could make a tutorial lesson for "tibetan cloud dream" ?

  • @xtiplerx Nice idea... If this gets 200 thumbs up I'll do it ;-)

  • @RobChappers 224 :)

  • Not hard to get 5 million views when you play guitar well and have over 350 videos.

  • @MarshallRoberts

I'd say it's still pretty hard. You do it, off you go :)

  • @AreYouIrrelevant But I can't play well. I can only play mediocrely.

  • Very nice! I know the three note per string/7 position method, but this is the first time that I'm inclined to look into the pentatonic related five box method. I will tab what you play and learn, learn, learn.

    Thanks!

  • @massif20022000 If you are a blues based player then I think that the 5 shape method is much more practical - I use both all the same and blend them together ;-)

  • @massif20022000 if youve got those tabbed out could you copy and paste it into a youtube message for me? that would be great thanks

  • More theory!!!

  • great video Chappers!

  • dorian = top gear

  • Awesome tone

  • holy alliteration chapman!

  • Dude.... This kind of lessons are awesome! But I'd like to ask you one thing... can you use a guitar with inlays next time so it's easier to see where we are on the board? Thanks! ;-)

  • @kbkbabbie Yeah actually I did think of that... Sorry mate, I just don't normally look at my guitar when I play so hardly any of mine have inlays ;-)

  • if i could super subscribe to your channel i would

  • @TheVirtualGravity I love you man, I think "Super Subscribing" is probably just joining my fourm ;-)

  • I WANNA BE Ur FRIEND CHAPPERS U're SO cool :-D

  • @N3wNaKeD ha ha thanks man, we can be youtube friends ;-)

  • play the damn Blackdroid!

  • i love all of your videos

  • Such a helpful lesson. I want shreducation.

  • You said you were playing the modes in the key of A, but wouldn't you have to start on the corresponding degree of the major scale? For example; A Dorian would start on B, A Phrygian on C, etc. You started every scale on A, so they weren't all in A major. This isn't me being a dick, I love your videos man, I just wanted to make sure.

  • @jacobtheguitarfreak I just played each mode starting on an A so I could keep the close-up camera in one place.

  • @jacobtheguitarfreak Also... no you don't have to start on a specific note to play any mode, that's not how they work at all... For example I could play A Dorian starting on an A, B, C, D, E, F# or G. These scale shapes could in fact be used to play any major mode at all... Again as an example I could play A Dorian using G Ionian or even B Phrygian etc ;-)

  • thanks rob

it would be awesome to give examples of popular songs for each scales, so we could jam along with...

  • i always appreciate any and all the free lessons thanks, rob

  • Hey Chappers!

Congratulations on the 5 mil channel views.

If you remember on another vid we talked about theory, and I'm glad I used what I know already of theory (remember im still in high school and learning music) for example, when I'm writing a song I will use the same notes that the chord progression uses and using the same notes on a higher scale to construct solos/fills etc.

    So thank you Chappers

KEEP SHREDDING AND KEEP MAKING VIDS!

    Deco,

  • yo chappers search for Syu - Set Me Free (demo) .. any idea what scale does he use? would love to learn that :D

  • So that's how you came up with the Cirlce of Doom Riff! :D

I'm gonna go make my own riff, a better riff, a faster riff, I DO have the technology!

    >:-)

  • Great lesson, just what I needed!

    Thanks Rob :)

  • Good idea this 'library' thing mate! Anyone wanting to know how to use or apply these modes should definitely check out Shreducation when it is released later this year.

  • Cheers for putting this up, I've been meaning to get some more scales down, but the thing is, what backing would I use to solo over with these scales? I mostly play like classic rock (AC/DC, Guns N Roses, Free, Black Stone Cherry etc) so can I just use these where I would normally use a pentatonic, or does it have to be a certain kind of backing to play over?

  • @hardrockerdave94 For classic rock/bluesy stuff pentatonic is your best best but you're open to dorian (on the minor stuff) and mixolydian (on the major stuff or dominant chords). Pentatonics are great but they are sort of colorless and unmelodic

so ya gotta open up to stuff like dorian especially because it fits with the minor blues stuff but its not abrasive like using aeolian (full minor) because its got a major 6th and not a minor 6th. Minor 6th = bad for blues rock/blues typically

  • @hardrockerdave94 Learn a Major scale "chord scale", each chord represents a mode... So you can focus on a chord and play some other from the same scale around it = simple modal backing track ;-)

  • There isn't enough nakedness in this video.

  • Cool, any chance of a better close up of the fretboard on coming lesson.... scales are the bane of my life

  • Love you Chappers!

  • Great video Rob, i think i'll be using this for a quite a while. Big help mate.

Can i ask what video software you edit with?

oh, and congrats on your 5 million views!

  • Like

  • You are really an amazing teacher, this is one video thats going to get like 1000000000 views because everyone is going to keep comming back to this "Library" haha So thank you sooooooooooooooo much Ron :)

  • @FenderStrat002

    Who's Ron?

the guy from harry potter? :P

  • @OndskapensHersker Hahahahahahaha ooops my bad. Rob.

  • Nicely taught, you did well to cover both methods of fingering in there & keep it just over 8mins.

  • congrats on the view, and great lesson!

  • Awesome! I'm loving this!

  • Please, scales would be fantastic =) It's been hard for me to understand but you do have a great hand at teaching.

  • I love this, please continue to do scales!

  • I Like This
