Robinson, Ali, Armstrong, Louis, Wilde, Duran, Greb, Pep, SR Leonard, Johnson, Monzon, Pacquiao, B.Leonard, Chavez, Hagler, Jones, Marciano, Langford, Moore, Charles, Jofre, Hopkins, Hearns, Mayweather, Dempsey, Whitaker, Gans, Foreman, Arguello, Tunney, Calzaghe, Saddler.. these are many of the all-time greats.
Jimmy Wilde deserves to be much more famous; best flyweight, over 100 fights officially (many more unrecorded) before defeat, fighting bigger men, great heart and punch
R obinson 1 Armstrong 2 Ali 3 Monzon 4 Duran 5 Benny Leonard 6 Alexis Arguello 7 Jimmy Wilde 8 Archie Moore 9 Marvin Hagler 10 .Tough list to compile but thats my list today.
Forgot about Gene Tunney.....gotta remember greatest ever can mean greatest ever for their time or all time, depends how you look at it, but to compare fighters now to fighters from 50 to 90 years ago is unfair, like putting their best sprinter then with our best sprinter now. But who for there time achieved greatness!!!
@chaseybears, it's not unfair at all, and the sprinting example is a poor one. Boxing is a totally different dynamic and is not at all reliant on these so-called 'modern' training techniques or technology. There is little (if anything at all) to suggest that fighters are any fitter or better now, so it makes it nice and easy to compare across eras compared to other sports. My top ten is Robinson, Armstrong, Greb, Ali, Langford, Duran, Fitzsimmons, Charles, B. Leonard and Jofre, in that order.
@iljn1988 Ye..your right thinking about it, not a good example using sprinters, but what Im trying to say is that equipment , medical knowlege ( repair and recovery etc.) and understanding our physiology has improved to aid in sports power and endurance ( not to mention drugs shamefully), however these guys of old superceded the physical punishments that are sometimes acceptable today.
So are we now more technical in our approach, and that is all that has really changed, I dont know?
@chaseybears, thanks a lot. And can I also say, it's good to see that you mentioned Tunney, who doesn't miss out on my top ten by much (I have somewhere around the fifteen mark) but should at least be in everyone's top twenty. I don't have any problem with anyone putting him in their top ten, of course! Just difficult to cram roughly 140 years of Queensberry-era boxing in to such a small list!
Sugar Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong, Harry Greb, Joe Louis, Benny Leonard, Joe Gans, Roberto Duran, Mickey Walker (Maybe) Haha...so hard to choose, but these guys have got to be up there with the very best.......
Sugar Ray and Harry Greb Rule the roost in my book!
of course all the flips say are gonna say pac because they know nothing of the sport past previous champions but i gotta go with SRR & Joe Louis on this one
people who are saying ALI and Sugar Ray are the best guaranteed have never watch any of their fight.....yes they were the best in their time but its not their time anymore im so sick of ppl saying their the best but only because they heard it from their parents and shit.
Its Ali or Pacquiao ,bcos of their records. Ali for being a 3X World Heavyweight Champion for 2 decades. Pacquiao for being d only 7 Weight Divs. World Champion.beating morales, barrera, marquez,n hatton, all 3 Weight Divs. World Champs; cotto n larios 2 Weight Divs. World Champs; n dela hoya 6 Weight Divs. World Champ.

Sugar Ray Robinson without question, but I think Salvador Sanchez could have been if he did not die tragically in his prime.
