  • Mark Kermode is clearly a hipster who wants nothing to do with what is successful. Hence the paltry amount of views his channel gets.

Grow up.. 3D has it's place.

  • does this work?

  • You can tell if a 3D movie is going to be terrible if it has 3D in the title.

  • @Fa6ade You can tell a 3D movie is going to be terrible because it is in 3D.

  • The industry seems to be getting behind Kermode on this even if they're not being outspoken about it. Heard of Hugo, the 3D Scorsese film? Apparantly he was bribed by the studios to make a 3D film which didn't rely on the gimmickery of 3D to make the film enjoyable. What else will that man do for a lifes supply of Crunchy Nut Cornflakes...?

  • 2d rules!! i love the dramatic stare n music at the end.. lol the future is gonna suck

  • i watched this twice because it was so hilarious. hell im gonna watch it a third.

  • The art of 3D cinema reproduction has not yet been perfected in my opinion and I think images might need to projected directly to each retina to be absolutely spot on, and perhaps even calibrated for each person from a personal visor. But in the end, we all see in 3D, we have two eyes, we see depth. Why ignore depth?

  • I also think most people are only interested in meaning (i.e. story and dialogue -that's also why galleries are full of people reading descriptions) so they feel anything visually interesting is a distraction from language. It's absurd when people talk of films being better or worse than books, but that shows how they think!

  • Is this about what's wrong with 3D as a concept or, what's wrong with the present state of the art? If astronauts travel to Mars, do you think there's no point capturing the moment in 3D? We do actually see in 3D and so to recapture such a moment, 3D playback is necessary. But, I think it will require a personally callibrated headset, perhaps even utilising new 'shoot first, focus later' tech. Directors are new to the art and haven't yet shown how 3D can be used creativley, subtly or tastefully.

  • does it really matter in the end, if you can watch the film in both 2d and 3d just take your pick surely?

  • @guitarreilly No, but I do think that a 3D film should be explored without having to consider 2D limitations. One day we might be able to look around corners in a film, refocus on different objects and points, perhaps not suitable for a traditional 'story film', but in some kind of (purely audio-visual) film experience.

  • can you mass market these glasses please

  • YES thank you!

I get so sick when watching 3D so this is just golden for me

  • i dont like 3d movies coz it looks like its coming out the screen

  • 1:30 woah this is Brilliant! it's like he's really popping out of the screen! Can't wait for the sequel!!!!

  • Kermodes prediction of 3D being a short phase? FAIL. Don't blame us for the fact you cant see depth into the screen, thats your problem, let the rest of us enjoy the excellent 3D experience.

  • @1wibble2 Actually if you'd care to notice, for Pirates 4 the number of people watching 3D has declined HUGELY.

  • @seraduha1 That has nothing to do with it being in 3D and everything to do with it being a rubbish film.

  • @1wibble2 Weren't paying attention were you? The movie itself is still doing fantastically well, I believe it's about to cross the $400million mark worldwide? What I was pointing out is that the ratio of 3D tickets to 2D tickets over previous 3D releases has declined HUGELY. Therefore, it's not the movie that's being rejected, it's the 3D.

Oh and you've just made another fantastic point actually. You've highlighted the tendency of 3D films to be rubbish films. Thankyou sir.

  • @seraduha1 Ahh so by saying a film is rubbish, one that also happens to be in 3D, ergo that must mean all 3D films are rubbish? wow, what sound logic you have there, very impressive.... *facepalm*

  • @1wibble2 I suggest lessons in fundamental English, as from your comment it seems to be chronically lacking. Note the word "tendency", implying that as a general rule of thumb 3D films are rubbish; hence, I in no way suggested that as a blanket rule each and every 3D film is rubbish. The fact that you cannot even grasp that doesn't say much for those who champion 3D. But since you mention it, I would be very interested in learning of a 3D film which is not lacking some way. Care to name a few?

  • @seraduha1 Tendency - a natural disposition toward... it is you that need to consult a dictionary ;), the implication was very much there and your backpedalling is laughable.I think we can both agree that a film that truly deserves the word 'rubbish' cannot be the highest grossing film of all time. Ergo Avatar is not 'rubbish', its very unoriginal, but it wowed the world and demonstrated 3D at its best. Toy Story 3, an excellent movie.Hell even Thor had some surprising depth for a popcorn movie

  • @seraduha1 Bottom line is, Kermode can't sense 3D depth into the screen and he's taking out his personal inability by making a blanket statement of how 3D technology is flawed, which is just stupid. My least favourite aspect of 3D is stuff coming out of the screen, the stuff only Kermode notices. Let those of us that can apreciate the extra dimension looking into the screen enjoy it whilst he quits his luddite winging. A 3D movie on a Sony 4K projector is an incredible experience.

  • @1wibble2 Your shitty arguments suck.

The bottom line is, 3D sucks. And the market has spoken: Sales of 3D movies are dropping like a rock in a swimming pool.

  • @bubbah Since when has the market been a good indicator for art? Just because no director has done anything great in 3D, doesn't mean I'm going to walk around with one eye closed.

  • @ToneSpectra Since when did 3D have anything to do with art?

And what IS a good indicator for art, exactly?

  • Comment removed

  • @ToneSpectra Comparing 3D movies to sculptures is completely retarded. The point of sculptures is not 3D. The point of 3D movies is 3D (because the industry desperately wants to sell more tickets, but they failed).

Again, explain what you think is a good indicator for art. You make claims about what isn't, which means that you must know what is.

What's hilarious here is that 3D movies are usually the ones they think are going to sell craploads of tickets.

  • @bubbah It may be used as a money making scheme, but that has nothing to do with the concept of 3D capture. Why would you not want to revisit experiences recorded in stereoscopic and stereophonic (binaural) formats? That is what actually entering the eyes and ears of people in real places that (with perfected tech) could be re-played. The point of sculptures is not 3D? The proportions of Michaelangelo's David (large hand, etc) were to give a greater impression of size from a floor perspective.

  • Hell yeah 3D is going down

  • @criminalzerg Seriously? I hope you're trolling.

  • What kind of fool would pay for a 3D movie just to watch it in 2D?

  • @criminalzerg because a lot of cinemas ( at least where I am ) are not bringing out the normal cinema release they release it in 3D only.

  • Kermode 110millionbilliontrillion% bang on- again.

  • This'll be useful when Thor comes out in 2D in selected theaters.

  • Im starting to see why kermode hates 3d since every damn movie is coming out in 3d these days

  • The important question is - how do I get 2D glasses fo my proper glasses! 3D should be illegal! wearing two pairs of glasses is evil!

  • I now wear my 2D glasses when seeing a retro-fitted film, and 3D glasses when it is actually a 3D film!

    Pure skillz all the way!

  • 3D is just a distraction, when i went to see avatar i was constantly removing and adjusting my glasses and seeing what the screen looked like without the glasses. 2D is fine if not better.

  • I bet you can't see 3D with your eyes that's why you shit on it

  • the failed tech of the 80's rehashed for a new generation of dumbarse's. 3D is even more of a stupid fad than "motion control". what will they think of next to con morons out of their money, virtual reality or even "smell-o-vision.

  • 3D is fucking ridiculous. I find myself always shifting my glasses to see what the movie looks without them. It distracts from the actual plot of the movie. Doesn't help that I already wear glasses, and wearing glasses over glasses feels and looks silly.

    Fuck 3D.

  • @DurasDrum Your complaint is about the present state of tech, not about the concept of 3D itself. Everyone confuses these two issues.

  • @ToneSpectra No, 3D itself is useless and pointless in a movie.

  • @bubbah Wow, what a solid argument you make! Is colour useless in a film by that reckoning then? What does 'useless' mean when it comes to art? Art expands the mind, it explores new visual/sound worlds, these images aren't just useful to tell stories.

  • @ToneSpectra That, and the actual concept of 3D. It's absolutely ridiculous. The only movie I thought used 3D properly was Jackass 3D, but that was only because of the 3D dildos coming my way. Other than that, I'll stick to 2D, thank you very much.

Also good job commenting on a 1 year old comment. :X

  • @DurasDrum You're overconfident about the value of your opinions. It's better to say nothing until you achieve some self-awareness and realise your own limitations.

  • The quickest thing to kill 3D will be post 3D. The audience will quickly learn they are being cheated - not just financially. I am not averse to 3D per se. I just have not seen a film in 3D yet that either used it to good effect. The biggest issue is that it is far to self aware.

  • Filmmaker should be able to achieve totally immersed in a film by using good plot, dialogue, character development, and cinematography. 3D is the last bastion of the talentless.

  • stupid :)

  • 2-D for the win!

  • Remember you can give thumbs DOWN - to reduce the up-votes when you want to.

    Thumbs DOWN to NBNA !!!

    3D is great.

  • Toy Story 3 in 3D was beeeeautiful!!

  • 30 percent color loss? Really?

  • @Darkwalker1990 how dare you, you motherfucker!

  • Nintendo have released new hand held called the 3DS which doesn't require glasses, which will be intersting to see how good the 3d looks, the thing about 3d is while im not in favour for it in movies, I am a gamer and I think alot of games would really work in 3D (without the glasses) mainly because people wont say "oh that old video game lets stick it through a pc to 3d it" like theyll do with old films, and as games are now as big as films its def going to happen

  • and that's how it's done !

  • 3d for films is a no no

but 3d for games is understandable alot of hardcore gamers use headsets to immerse themselves deeper into the new call of duty and in multiplayer this allows them to hear footsteps alot easier and kill whoever it is so simply adding a pair of goggles wont put gamers off but for movies its just stupid

  • How do you turn the movie back into a silent black and white movie? Because technology is BAD.

  • i love it! i am almost always 180 degrees opposite to kermode on any film review. but on the whole 3-D thing i am so with him.

  • thank god!

  • ahh i love 3-D but those glasses make it look dark.

  • Excellent - great humour!

  • Here in the United States that would be pointless right now since all megaplexes that I have been to have these 3d movies showing in 3d and 2d. Actually almost any city with a theater showing a movie in 3d, will have another theater showing it in 2d. I guess in the UK it is a different story.

  • @tonhogg1 Yes it is, over here they, in my local cinema at least, are showing movies in 3D and 2D, but the 3D is on all day and the 2D is on at 1, maybe 2, times; usually at a time when you wouldn't actually go to the cinema - in the early-to-mid morning.

  • Mark Kermode rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Kinda jarrin (annoying) to wacth if you're already wearing specs

  • I like 3D but I prefer the old fashion 2D. Thanks a bunch!

  • dickhead.

  • dickhead.

  • dickhead.

  • What a douche

  • Why not go one step further and make a pair that takes the colour out too? How about ear muffs so you can't hear anything? I know.. why not just go stand in the car park and grumble about the weather. Then you can REALLY enjoy yourself !! ;-)

  • I feel sorry that Mr Kermode is one of those people who isn't able to sense the true sense of depth of image going into the screen. Clearly the technology won't work for all of the population, but his almost luddite anti-3D stance is getting a bit silly now. As long as 2D still gets shown alongside 3D, everyone can enjoy their preferred choice. Personally, I love 3D, it works.

  • Absolutely. It just makes him sound like a miserable joyless old fart. Then again, I suppose if he just said "that was great !" about everything, he wouldn't get the viewers / listeners. It's a very odd world we live in !! :)

  • @ArksunSound I for one hate 3d. It's nothing more than a gimmick that should be restricted to fun park rides at universal studios. Concentrate on the script instead of distracting us with irritating visuals.

  • Good ol Kermode, we should just let 3d fly out of the screen, straight past us and into the bin.

  • I liken this new wave of 3D movie projection to the appearances of widescreen, colour and stereo sound - a step closer to 'reality'. We see things three-dimensionally, do we not? So why not a movie?

  • @Litshttam If you think 3D is so good because it's "a step closer to reality" then just imagine how good it would be to go to the theater and watch a play instead. Personally, I go to the flicks to escape reality.

  • @wilfthehairy You wouldn't mind the abolition of widescreen, colour and stereoscopic sound as well, then, which were steps closer to reality too...?

  • So I made some 2D glasses for Alice In Wonderland.

It didn't work. It was still in 3D. Two left lens, still 3D. Still coming at me in pointy pointy, double vision nonsense. Film was weak too. Pity.

  • I remember when Mark reviewed Cloudy with a chance of meatballs that he said that the only way worth watching was in 3D. Or have I got it wrong??

  • What's wrong with going to see a 3D film? It's a bit of fun. Sometimes you go a little too far Mark..

  • Probably not, actually...

3D clearly isn't the future, it contributes nothing. Speech and colour, though, do.

  • That's exactly what they said about the talkies, then color. 3D's not all about things jumping out of the screen - done right it's a "window on the world" rather than looking at a flat painting - Cameron used this beautifully in Avatar whatever you think of the story. 3D is coming to everything - get used to it - heck, if you put your prejudices to one side, you may even begin to enjoy it!

  • if they can create 3d without the glasses im up for it otherwise itll just exist in cinema which is too much of a pain

  • One more thing - 3D very clearly does contribute something - it's called depth - z space. Your eyes use it too - except when watching flat screens. Used creatively it's a great extra tool for the director to lead your eye where she/he wants it to go. Why wouldn't you wnat it if you can have it?

  • same. hurt locker is miles better.

  • Well I've enjoyed TWO 3D films, with the 'REAL D" system... FAR better than the old green/red rubbish ... and great realism.... give me thumbs up if you agree :)

  • I always enjoy Kermode and Mayos film reviews. I may not always agree but Kermode clearly knows his stuff and is intelligent in his criticisms and praise. Which, is more than can be said for some of the ' no marks' who post on here.

  • What makes a film immersive is a compelling story with interesting characters, not stuff coming out of the screen at you. 3D is a gimmick plain and simple, also a means of preventing pirates as another user stated.

  • Not attacking you, but how is he clueless? I've been a Kermode fan for a while now and he seems overall very well-informed, if you ask me.

  • Avatar gave me a massive headache, thumb me up if I'm not the only one.

  • Would love to see Kermode's fucking massive hands coming at me in 3D. That's a viewing experience...

  • Theres only one other problem you have failed to mention Mark...you have to sit through pathetic made for 3d movies like Avatar. And still pay about a tenner for the 'experience' of it all.

  • I love you Kermode. Exactly what I was thinking.

  • Genius Kermode

  • The thumbnail did look like Mark was taking a big hit off a bong. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

  • Would you prefer to watch a colourised version of The Elephant Man? I bet your answer would be no, because the director intended it to be seen in black & white for artistic reasons.

The same applies to 3D. Its just that the technology is new so a lot of people are trying it out at the same time which is overloading things a bit. Avatar was started long before most of the other recent releases and should be respected for pushing artistic boundaries - not just for being one of many in 3D.

  • I'm with you all the way on this one. I've now made my own glasses too. Bring on the 2D splendour.

  • Excellent, Kermode, you speak from my heart..

  • 2D ALL THE WAY LETS GET IT ON

  • Kermode for film 2010!

  • I'm with Dr K on this, 3D can go &%!* itself.

  • Hehe, great work :P

  • In the thumbnail for this video it looked like you were holding a pipe up to your mouth. That is for sure one good way to enjoy a 3d movie.

  • 12 Angry men would benefit from 3D

  • Why is it such a problem? It just adds a little to the experience. There's no need to get so pissy about it. Were you this moronic about changes from VHS to DVD to blu ray, SD to HD and all kinds of camera and recording developments?

  • you are correct.

  • Haha. Bravo

  • The best solution to 3D is too not pay to see any 3D movie. Taking along 2D glasses still sends out the signal you are happy to finance this nonsense.

  • It's not even 3D, it just 2D layers - like sheets of paper. It's not immersive since you're always aware of the screen by blurry things poking in and out of the edge. And, it's not in any way encouraging viewers to participate in the story because they so called 3D effect have made all the decisions for you in how to interpret the image. It's lame. It hurts your eyes, gives you headaches, means all the images look sapped of colour, and irritating. Fuck 3D. I gave it a shot, and it was not good.

  • Come one Mark...stop dragging your heels. I saw Avitar in 2D first then in 3D...the 3D version completely owned it

  • Thats because avatar is a shit movie in 2D because it has a shit plot.

  • @fatman1001 yeah your right. the best selling movie of all time is shit....no not really.

  • @Veliuszero1 Well I agree Avatar is not a shit movie, niether is it a very good movie but your argument is a weak one as you need to take into account serveal factors that influence the amount a movie makes. Inflation rate, prices of cineima ticket, how much cineima tickets affects people disposible income and poplation levels plus many more. Judging a movie by finiance is flawed, I mean look at Michael Bay for christ sake, terrible movies, yet makes loads of money.

  • @ellbo2

Plus, the media cartels are selling all their shit to themselves, doing tax dodges, and such. I'm dubious, I actually suspect that the the box office numbers that they report are totally fabricated.

  • The worst part of 3D, except for it hurting my head... is the colour loss... I hate 3D

  • long live 2D!!!!!

  • Some films benefit from 3D, some don't. It's not as if Twelve Angry Men is getting a 3D release.

  • The reason that 3D is being forced on audiences is that you cant pirate a 3D film, ESPN are developing a 3D service the world cup next year as a measure to stop illegal streaming of matches.

  • I really don't understand why you have such an issue with 3D. It's just another tool that's in its infancy that will only be useful for certain types of films.

  • @Hedonophobia In its infancy? 3-D film has been around for 75+ years.

Its not that there's an actual issue with 3-D, it's just that there is no real point to 3-D film because there is nothing being portrayed in 3-D that can't be conveyed in 2-D and have you experience it differently.

Absolutely pointless...or as the doctor would say, "Pointy, Pointy."

  • Yeah, fuck 3d.

It's just a marketing ploy to make money for a failing industry. It's just a pathetic attempt to shut out the independent producers who can't afford to produce 3d, and would otherwise be saving the industry from itself.

    Viva la dos D

  • I'm absolutely doing this. 3D stinks.

  • look at how many 2d films there are, look at how many 3d films there are, this is just bullying

give 3d a chance to make good films

avatar could of been good if it didnt do attack of the clones story wise

  • Ha! Now that's a great idea for a change.

I really cannot believe how people are even amazed by this entire 3d stuff. It all seems to follow the "Do a decent movie and add uneccessary scenes of stuff blown in your face"- formula. This simply ruins any atmosphere and does not help at all at developing a valid story.

And as far as 3deffects are concerned: it is sad to know that movies of the early 90s (starship troopers, jurassic park, etc.) had much more convincing results than todays movies.

  • I have always hated this 3d fad. It barely works and the illusion is broken by the edges of the cinema screen. Some scenes in avatar, such as the lab and army base scenes looked like they came from a pop up book, with 3, 2d layers.

  • I'm surprised he managed to assemble the new glasses with such massive hands.

    Yeah, I don't like 3D either.

  • amazing. i might have to go watch another 3d film just to do this nifty trick and be ready for the new 3D tintin film.

  • 3D sucks, the least immersive experience I've had is watching Avatar in 3D. Wish I'd gone for 2D, but I gave it a go, and it was lame. Hopefully people will wake up and realise it's silly gimmick.

  • 3d doesn't really make sense, if you want to enjoy 3d or 4d movies got to a theme park.

i've watched "up" in 3d, but the glasses distracted me.

    loved the vid

  • My eyes are well mesed up, doesn't work on me!

  • @PoppyMonsterMunch I ended up with a massive migrane pal! I watched half the thing in double-vision without my glasses.

  • haha I love this

  • We hate 3D we do
